I have red raspberries and they are awesome this year. I used to pull all the leaves out in the fall when I pruned. Now I pile all my yard leaves in the berries and they seem to be so much happier. Probably the best harvest this year. I was laughing when you talked about mowing them down. I pull them and mow them all the time. I too feel bad when I just pull and throw away but what can you do. This is AMAZING Mike! It soumds like your wife really rocks! Canning amd preserving takes a lot pf hard work! It's getting more and more difficult for me to do the work on my own. It's a very painful process without help.😔 but im considering doing a perennial food orchard like this. If you mixed a germination preventative into the compost/manure, you could stop this from happening. I got a load of horse manure 2 years ago and wish I would have put down preen myself! What a nightmare!

I am in the Pacific Northwest also, and I have a massive raspberry crop this year! It is all we can do to keep up with picking. Today I made sorbet, kind of a bit of work, but very good. I keep moving the stragglers to different areas of the yard, and gift plants to anyone who wants them. I have a Chow Chow who considers herself a great rodent killer, so do the rabbits, squirrels and rats. Since I started letting her run free in my garden areas around 9 p.m. I don’t have any problem at all. I am having a garage sale soon and there will be raspberry plants , probably for free, when I am giving them away I put them in grocery store plastic bags. Cheap and easy to carry.

Hi Mike, other than the Korean JADAM recommendation to grow an orchard with grass, you are the only organic grower who talks about the benefits of keeping grass along with woodchips and manure/cpmpost. I have a bare patch where dangerous old trees were removed, and a grassy area. I would love to grow berries and small fruit trees. I think the grass would moderate the hot summer heat and cold winter freezes. I am in Central FL where the summers are crazy hot but we also get nighttime temps in the 20s F in the winter. Oddly enough, the winters tend to be dry, too. I am definitely going to look into growing some grass as a cover. Thanks and happy berry eating!

Hi Mike! I am enjoying your videos so much that I'm watching the tour of your orchard at 3:15 am!! Your farm is absolutely gorgeous! Your berries look so healthy. You and Shellie must never get to rest! Lol. I have always heard that fertilizing strawberry plants will kill them. I have used steer manure early in the spring and have had pretty good luck. Your strawberry 🍓 plants look amazing. What kind of fertilizer do you use? I need to get everbearing strawberries so we have berries the whole summer, but want to get a larger size berry. The strawberry plants I have now are the giant strawberry called Whopper, and they are June bearing. Basically, I am feeding a bear, deer, rabbits and birds.We need some sort of fencing. I don't mind sharing, but obviously the critters have a huge appetite! All your plants look very healthy! I really enjoyed watching this video and seeing your orchard! I dont know when you and Shellie can find time to rest! You have a beautiful place!

Hi I summer pruned on Saturday just gone the reason I do it in mid July is my pear trees now the nights are cutting in and it's too late for them to push out new growth so they concentrate on making fruiting spears. Also if you do summer pruning there should be no need for winter pruning as the trees will be ready for spring as they are. 😎👍
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 жыл бұрын
The winter pruning is for shape. I like to go through my trees in the winter when the leaves are off and I can see the branching. At that time, I'm able to shape the trees better and allow for more air flow between branches, get rid of anything that's excessively crossing each other, and just give them a better appearance overall.

Awesome fruit trees! Didn't had success in my only apple in the backyard. Always visited by the apple rust, then transfers to pear tree. Eventually cut the 8" dia apple tree this spring and kept the 10-inch trunk dia. pear. Anyway, you mentioned seeding the cleared area with grass, do you want to try white clover (trifolium repens)? I will do so in my front lawn and probably in the backyard garden. I sort of took the cue from "You Can't Eat The Grass" channel. Although white clover won't feed us, it will be a much better pollinator attractor than grass. Cheers!

Great video. What variety is your raspberries? I have Heritage and one other very large variety, but yours are so bushy and healthy. Hi Mike! The largest raspberries i have are thornless and a heavy producer. Maybe that's the variety you have. The problem i had was my husband built a shop andbi had to move the plants in the hot summer weather. I only had a few that made it. They are multiplying. Looking forward to my recovery and being able to take care of my gardens!💚

Wonderful video, Mike. I got some great tips from you on managing the raspberries as mine keep expanding on their own. What seems to be a new trend here in Vermont and nationwide is for people to be planting Haskap (honey berries), the newer varieties from Canada seem to be much more flavorful than the older northern european ones. I tried them this year, along with 4 varieties of gooseberries, but it will be awhile before I will know if they have been worth the effort. Kind regards. Craig

Wow! What a beautiful arrangement (minus weeds). Too bad you have a surplus each year though. I read once of a farmer with the same problem with his berries. He allowed people to come in with their own baskets and pick their own berries, then they paid him by the pound/quart/pint etc. He had all he could use and made money on what he could not use and had no labor costs for picking the fruits. Just an idea. I think he had a pre arranged subscription thing going on, whereby the customers paid him a flat fee for membership etc then they paid a reduced rate for fresh, self-picked produce. Just a thought for you. It might pay for some of your farming costs. Thanks for an enjoyable time watching your show.

Hi, How do you maintain acidic soil for the blueberries?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 Жыл бұрын
The acidic soils build over time. Add a lot of carbon mulch and it will become fungally dominant. As the fungus breaks down the carbon, they will create a more acidic soil that will last.

We have the same problem with wildlife getting in and eating our gardens. The main difference is that our wildlife are mostly kangaroos and you'd be surprised by how high a large Eastern Grey will jump. During the recent drought and, I suppose, desperate with hunger, they were actually smashing _through_ the wire netting on the fences as well as sailing over. Between the drought and the hungry beasties it wasn't a fun time to be a gardener. We have deer here too. Not native, of course. Escapees from previous attempts at farming them, but shy and no where near as aggressive as the roos. It really makes your heart sink when you discover that all your hard work has been eaten to the ground overnight.
