Kirk was trying to get Khan into leaving. So he started fake baiting him into coming down. Khan thought oh he's trying to get me to come down there, I'm not going to do that to spite him. The enterprise is looping around the planet doing repairs And will come back around. Kirk is using reverse psychology to play Khan into leaving the area. Khan being arrogant thinks he sees kirks plan and decides to do the opposite which is exactly what Kirk wants. Kirks freak out is to taunt Khan to keep him from thinking straight and to get him to leave thinking he's won and Kirk is panicking. Kirk knows if Khan leaves the enterprise will be there in 4 hours to beam them off. If Khan sent me down to kill him hed be dead.

"Cold" is an awfully odd term to use for Kahn. If we're talking his debut in Space Seed, I'd be with you, but in Wrath of Kahn, he's completely gone over the deep end in his desire for revenge. It's so bad that when Kirk sets a trap in the nebula, his most trusted henchman Joachim stops the ship and reminds him that he's already won. They have the Genesis device and a ship. Kirk then easily taunts Kahn, causing him to throw Joachim aside and take the ship into the nebula himself to try and kill Kirk. Kirk's reaction to this? "I'll say this for him, he's consistent." Kirk then proceeds to outmaneuver Kahn, costing the tyrant the lives of his people and leaving him with only one last petty revenge via the detonating the Genesis device. Cold? No. In Wrath of Kahn, he was stripped of his objectivity and left as a vengeance machine.

Those talking about Ricardo Montalban, but can we admire Paul Winfield for his role in this movie? A captain who did have a feeling of authority when he spoke, a presence which worked, and real good delivery of his lines in a calm tone most of the time. Even if he was doomed . . . he turned that phaser on himself instead of Kirk. This is one of my favorite movies, forget Star Trek or sci-fi . . . this is just so well-handled. Hard to believe the person making it had no experience with Star Trek before being brought in for this, or that the follow up movie wasn't nearly as good. (Though poor Christopher Lloyd tried so hard.) When people start decrying "that person can't make a production about THAT, they have no experience with it!", I just recall Harve Bennett getting *THIS* movie to work. It's not impossible, just very difficult.

Had Paramount Pictures fully supported a bigger budget for this film, and had it produced it at a motion picture level than an ostensible TV movie of the week, perhaps the role of Khan would’ve been somewhat larger. (Yeah, yeah, I know Paramount had its reservations since the previous film under-performed.) Perhaps truly giving more for Ricardo Montalban to do. Perhaps his performance would’ve severed the snotty stand of the AMPAS and recognized Montalban with a Best Supporting Actor nomination because he was THAT fantastic of an actor, and Khan is brilliantly performed well by him! This one has been and will always be my most favorite of Star Trek movies one I went to see in the theatres like 4 or 5 times couldn't believe they'd kill Spock and then in tandem I HAD to see the next one about as many times but this one had Khan and what an ominous character that Ricardo brought to the movie. Even though people groan over the words of Melville being twisted into a space battle I knew that as a kid it was showing the kind of thing that Star Trek was like a naval group parting through the stars so them using that metaphor to me was completely perfect but as great as that was Ricardo was and will always be an incredible actor and his role will never be duplicated. The visceral anger and hate that he had for Captain Kirk to then Admiral. It was so perfect we were living in California when this movie came out and it was the day before the movie opened on one of the TV stations they played the Space Seed episode for those who wanted to be reminded before watching. I remember reading in the paper that the numbers of people watching that episode on TV was huge. And then came the show at the theatres and it was perfect. A whole new group of Trekkies were put in stone. Thanks Ricardo and Leonard

By far the best Star Trek movie ever...you right why wasn't Ricardo Montablon nominated for a Academy award?.. He was stereotyped in the 50's as a Latin lover...nothing changed in Hollywood 30 years later...👍

For everyone who think it's spelled "Kahn", it's actually spelled "Khan."

Imagine being hit by one of those phasers, and having it take long enough that you (1), not only realise what's happening, but (2), have enough time to scream out in pain or anguish.

Still and always, the quintessential "Waaiit for it" moment in all of Star Trek!

" Khan, you bloodsucker!" My favorite line of that movie. Shatner said it with a barely contained fury that ended with " DO YOU?!!!"
