I don’t think he thought he was going to get away with it. I think he was so consumed in his mission to acquire the crown, on being king, that he didn’t even consider what the consequences. Didn’t consider them, or didn’t care. It’s a shame, really. He could’ve had love, and a life filled with enchantment. Instead, he traded it all for a life of guilt and paranoia, and in the end, lost his daughter as well as his wife.

I just hate Disneys new trend of “redeeming the villain means vilifying the good guys”. King Stefan was nowhere near this bad in the animated version. But I guess Disney figured if Maleficent was going to be a good guy then somebody had to take her place as the villain.

In the "making of" featurette, Sam Riley says this was the first scene they filmed. So his very first day on set for the poor guy, he was stark naked in front of Angelina Jolie, and three make-up girls were standing around discussing very matter-of-factly whether they needed to shave his arse, and he was wondering "Are we actually having this conversation on the set of a Disney movie?" Yes, and the first thing she does to Diaval is to deprive him of HIS wings when turning him into a man (though later, she uses Diaval's wings). I think the point in this relationship is that Diaval, over time, comes to deeply care for Maleficent, and she does not recognize it until the end.

and unappreciative as well, stefen saved her life by taking her wings and saying she is dead. if he had not done this, someone else would of actually killed her for a kingdom. she is bitter and vengeful and goes and does the exact same thing to the crow ( takes his wings and turns him into a man, which he is sad about his loss of freedom, notice the way he looks back to his missing wings several times.) but then also makes him her slave. shows the spite of women and how this seems OK when a woman does this but not a man. there are so many interesting aspects to the movie, including the satanic one mentioned earlier in the movie.
@StarlitSwamp8 жыл бұрын
While it may be true that killing Maleficent would have been even worse, I wouldn't say that betraying one's childhood friend in such a horrible manner is something worthy of their gratefulness. As someone she loved and trusted, Stefan could have warned her of the danger she was in and together they could have thought of another way to make her pass for dead. And even if the scheme had failed, I'm quite sure that if he had consulted her, she would have much preferred to take her chances with the threat of potential intruders than to be tricked and robbed of her wings like that. But winning the king's favor was clearly more important to Stefan than truly helping his supposed friend. However, I do agree that Maleficent's subsequent treatment of Diaval wasn't much better, and it seems to me that it was precisely one of the things that the movie was trying to convey. Maleficent is an ambiguous character and I really don't think she was supposed to be depicted as being right in exerting her vengeance; quite the contrary, as shown later when she bitterly regrets casting the curse on Aurora. Making the raven her slave isn't proof of her being a strong female character, but rather of her being unable to let anyone in again after having her trust broken. She doesn't think Diaval would be willing to help her without some ulterior motive and so she controls him to ensure he won't also backstab her, but we're never told that it's OK. It would be a little worrying if the situation remained the same in a way that made it seem for the best, but Maleficent goes through some redeeming character development and eventually comes to value Diaval's loyalty for what it is. If you remember, before going into battle near the end, she frees him from the engagement he had taken toward her, and from that point on, it's by his own free will that he chooses to stay by her side nonetheless, thus proving her wrong in believing that true dedication didn't exist just because one man had been treacherous to her. The ending wasn't quite clear on exactly to what extent their relationship changed after the events in the castle, but I got the impression that Maleficent now saw him much more as an equal and a friend than a servant.

CrowTRobot1977 he betrayed his lover/best friend for wild ambition after she spared him the first time they met she has a right to be pissed after being mutilated
@leesilm.44327 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and when you see (I don't remember if it was deleted or not anymore, just that it existed) the scene where he stops her from changing him by actually reaching out and gently taking a couple fingers to her wrist. Then he looks her straight in the eye and states his piece, before adding, "Now go on, change me if you like. I don't care anymore." And you see how the way she looks at him after that changes. So you see her beginning to think of him as more of an equal and less of a servant/slave/lesser. And even when they are talking after she turns him into the wolf, you see the teasing between them is similar to an older, bickering married couple unlike at the beginning where he walks with his face cast down and several paces behind her.
@chooseyourpoison51056 жыл бұрын
+CrowTRobot1977 I think you may be reading more into it than what is there. Maleficent doesn't enslave him, he volunteers after she saves him. "And in return for saving my life, I am your servant. Whatever you need." And the loss of his wings is only while he is in man form, he's still got them whenever he's in bird form, while Maleficent's wings are gone forever at this point. Plus she frees him from her service before entering the castle - he sticks with her out of his own free will. And he also gets some pretty cool wings as a dragon as well - I'm sure they were more than adequate compensation for temporary loss of wings when in human form ;)

This was such a clever addition to the original story. Diablo is very one-note in the animated version, but Diaval is my favorite character in malefiecent
@Aileil2 жыл бұрын
The best thing about Diablo was the little chase scene before he got turned to stone (admittedly, I enjoyed that a lot). The best thing about Diaval is what a unique force he is in "Maleficent" - he isn't a creature of magic; he isn't a human; he is loyal to Maleficent, yet even though she made him what he is, he has all sorts of interests and opinions independent of her. I'm just impressed they spent so much time making him a complete character.
@lilenwasnothere6867 Жыл бұрын
@@Aileil i believe the reason they spent time on him as a character is because he's supposed to be a foil to stefan in every way. a loving and playful father figure to aurora, kind and selfless (if sarcastic) and completely loyal. it's even more obvious in the original script, where he is explicitly maleficent's second love and she is in denial about her feelings for him until the end, which has maleficent hold diaval's hand, implying she's ready to love again, but taking it slow.
@Aileil Жыл бұрын

+Miya Hockenhull To me, just a pair of symbolic claws of his roots as crow. Since Disney used to be quite dualistic (good vs. evil) they might play with certain audiences' belief systems that it represents something diabolic ;-)

C. Smith because Walt Disney, back in 1959, called him Diablo and that's what i prefer to call him

***** Interestingly, Diablo (Spanish for devil obviously) was a raven and Diaval is a crow. No big deal on first sight, but I think chosen very deliberately considering the short outro on 2:00 where Diaval (back-shifted as crow) flies by the scarecrow. If you'd ask me, a poetic reference or subtle wake up call from the Disney crew that the devil is nothing but a decoy used by religions as scare tactics to keep their followers in fear to prevent them from stop believing. My 666 cents ;)
@Wolfsbane9099 жыл бұрын
Mikel Sablo I think you're confused between the game Diablo which also had an cut scene with an crow.
@MikelSablo9 жыл бұрын
Ben noneofyourbeeswax I've never played nor seen the Diablo game, so can't confuse anything with a cut scene from that game. Regardless it's a raven or crow, the fact that particular scene both opens as closes with the scarecrow indicates a subtle message from the director. Also note the scarecrow in the opening scene wears a cloth, but is disrobed in the closing scene. I'd say: almost poetically profound :)

Diaval's covered in forest grime when turned into a human which I consider more realistic as any other time the animal is perfectly clean, and the only way I'd excuse that if it was one that naturally grooms itself.
