I miss Mike Portnoy...he played with such ferocity. Such fervor. And at the same time, being a backup vocalist. Multitasking with the hardest and most essential instrument in the whole band is like tightrope walking over a volcano; one wrong move and you’re in the dust. This is especially true with a band like DT. But he did it. And he did it well. I respect Mike for doing what he felt was best for himself and taking a break from the band, but I miss him nonetheless

Portnoy gave DT's song so much heart, Mangini is incredible however he will never be able to contribute to the caliber of musical compositions that was delivered by Portnoy, and its so easy to identify just by listening to their last two albums compared to say something like Scenes from a Memory which I personally think is their finest piece of work. I feel like Dream Theater have now gone down the path of creating arguably almost too technically advanced songs and forgetting to add the magic like they always once did.

Here is why I believe Portnoy is better than Mangini.. Mangini is like listening to a teacher talk about Hemingway while Portnoy is more like actually reading it .. His stuff is elegant.. The drum fills he creates are much more interesting, entertainment and dynamics wise, simply put, it's fun to listen to him. For me personally, it's a treat to decipher the hit patterns in his compositions.. Excellent use of rests (silence).

The thing bout Dream Theater is, it needs fucking bad ass drums and Magini is not a bad ass player. He might be able do play faster than Portnoy with one hand but he hasn't his wibe and power. So speed isn't anything. Matt Garstka and maybe Thomas Lang are guys that plays with power that's equal to Portnoy's.

(He also sings and does backing vocals a lot which is really hard when your drumming!)

This is fabulous, what a band and what a Drummer. What I like about Portnoy is it all seems so smooth and done with minimum fuss unlike Mangini who acts like a 50 year old Travis Barker
@johndoe-bw6pj10 жыл бұрын
I agree with the first part about Portnoy playing effortlessly but disagree with your qritique on Mangini. Furthermore, it is obvious you don't know shit about drumming. Mangini is an amazing drummer, with far better technique and overall drumming ability than Portnoy. Plus Portnoy was with DT for 20+ years, he was a big part of the song writing process, he knows every part and plays it flawlessly. Would DT hire Mangini if he weren't a great drummer? The part about Travis Barker is a joke, i hope you realize that.....
@HeyLook28710 жыл бұрын
john doe I didnt say anything bad about Mangini, I said he focuses on certain things more than Portnoy, but I agree they're both fantastic but if they had a drum off between Portnoy/Mangini on DT songs, I'd still take Portnoy, watching Mangini play is like watch grass grow. Again, I love Mangini, he's a better drummer than 99% of people, but I feel that Portnoy in certain aspects is that 1% he's not better than.
@johndoe-bw6pj10 жыл бұрын
Serj Tankian I'm confused... I can't seem to find your comment and read it again. Nonetheless, i have to agree about that 1% you mentioned. I've seen them both perform with DT, completely different approach when it comes to drumming and overall stage presence. MP is a showman and will communicate a lot with the crowd whereas MM keeps his distance. I love them both and i believe DT are changing for the better since MM joined them. Peace.

Nowadays, when it’s so easy to become cynical about the state of music performance, it’s sometimes nice to return to something like this which wasn’t so long ago (I was at this show and got a massive speeding ticket on the ride home that ultimately got my license revoked lol…the things we do in our teens/twenties). This is such a fun show to watch and it reminds you of the creative heights artists can reach when they really swing for the fences.
@jeremysdrumming44742 жыл бұрын
I agree also! Its that and Mike's use of cymbal percussion with the smaller cymbals in between tom fills and with tom fills or his improvisations on old songs, really his personality is what made it so well with DT

Little-known fact (to some, anyway): DT would never play the same set twice in the same city or on consecutive nights, and it was Mike who kept track of every set to make sure that happened. Now, on their latest tour, they play the exact same set every night in every city. And it's best not to even bring up the quality of their last 3 or 4 albums.

LaBrie's vocals were dubbed, he was pretty bad that night.
@manifestgtr2 жыл бұрын
@@nicksm7980 There’s that little nugget of negativity I knew someone would crowbar in. I’ve seen these guys a few times, including this particular night. He was a little pitchy at times but his performance was just fine. Labrie has a job that’s more difficult than you could possibly comprehend, dude. Singing these songs night after night in their original keys, for hours at a time, decades on end…that’s fucking brutal on a human voice. Cut the guy some goddamn slack. He’s got one of the toughest jobs in all of rock.
@nicksm79802 жыл бұрын
@@manifestgtr, why did they dub him in the video then, if he was so awesome that night? I've seen him live several times, one time he was ok (happy days, fucking lottery), other times he was horrendous. I don't want to cut him any slack, I want to listen to a good show for my money. I understand that it's not his intention to be bad, but his degrading abilities ruined the band. Well, now he sounds like shit even on a studio record.
@manifestgtr2 жыл бұрын
@@nicksm7980 Well it’s very easy then dude…if you’re so worried about your “hard earned money”, spend it elsewhere. John Petrucci isn’t showing up to your house with goons. There’s an exceedingly simple solution to all of this that DOESNT involve actively trying to turn fans against them in youtube comment sections. …and dude, if you’re so concerned about live performance dubbing, you’re gonna have to go back to the 60s. Artists have been doing that for numerous reasons almost since the beginning of visual media.
@nicksm79802 жыл бұрын
@@manifestgtr, don't be dramatic, I'm not concerned about dubbing, I was just stating a fact. And yes, I don't attend DT shows anymore. Being a fan of a band doesn't mean that you must defend every move it makes. I love the band but hate the shit state in which they are in today.

There’s a lot of things that set Mike apart from a lot of other drummers. However, I think one of the things that’s overlooked quite a bit as far as dynamic muscle has to be backup vocals. I know most people don’t think about that, but the ability to just do that while playing progressive music of any kind has to be applauded. And while he doesn’t exactly have some amazing lead vocal sort of flexibility, the fact that he not only is perfectly capable of it within the context of the music is just incredible. Off the top of my head, I don’t know of any other progressive drummer/metal/etc, that’s playing those sorts of arrangements and also adding that extra layer of complexity. Just, yeah.
