I show how I made this DIY wood lathe stand for my new 12” midi woodturning lathe. This wood lathe cart has casters for mobility and drawers and cabinet for storage.

Nice job on the stand Mike. Looks to be very sturdy without being bulky or over complicated. Just right for your new lathe.

Great Job, as always! When I mounted my Nova DVR (wish I had kept that one) I found 4 hockey pucks and put those under the feet. Super stable! Thanks for the videos.

Mike; For my breakdown step I use a small battery trim saw and a 4' track section. Put a piece of rigid foam under the wood. Works well and I can take it to the lumber yard.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good solution. I don't do this often enough to put up with storing the foam board!

Looks great Mike. I like the idea of drawers and cabinet space. Currently I’m thinking of making one for my lathe and grinder on the same cabinet. I’m thinking of a bank of drawers and a cabinet with shelves on drawer slides to hold turning blanks. Now all I need is the time to make it.
@MikePeaceWoodturning

Thanks. Making one of these takes some serious effort. Good luck with yours.

Nice tip on lubing the drill bit/jig. Looks as good or better than anything I've built to date. BTW, good to hear someone say Robertson instead of square drive.

Thanks for that. I think I spent more time planning and designing then making. What was that Lincoln said about sharpening his axe? I saw your hat in one of your videos. Thanks for your service.

A nice looking cabinet Mike. Interested in how works for you. I found that a lathe on wheels produced too much vibration and that adding weight was a real plus. Also not sure how pocket screws will hold up to use with a lathe long term. Please keep us posted

Will do. If anything works loose I can dissasemble, glue and reassemble but do not anticipate a need for that. We will see.

Are the drop down or fixed? I like the idea of casters that move up out of the way, allowing levelers to adjust for an uneven floor. And that you are using marble sheet for weight instead of loose sand or concrete.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 5 жыл бұрын
Locking casters that stay in contact with the floor same as the lathes at my club. Don't think it will be a problem but certainly not idea' Am adding a granite counter scrap for extra weight.

Hi Mike, For some odd reason youtube stopped putting your notification up and I seem to have missed a lot of your videos. I have re-clicked the bell and things seem to be back to normal. What have you been doing to your knee, it looks very painful. The lathe stand looks simple but sturdy and should provide lots of storage that is a win in anyone's shop.

Thanks for checking in. KZbin does not always send notifications. Been working today on the drawers and door.

You will probably want to put some weight in that bottom shelf. I use a sack of concrete and it seems to work well!

Very helpful video Mike. I'm a new turner in the Atlanta area and recently bought a Rikon midi lathe. May I ask where you purchased the 5x5 baltic birch from? The big box stores don't sell it as far as I know. Thanks!

Looking go, I added a piece of 1/4 rubber between my stand and lathe to help with vibration and squeaking. I couldn't sit on the floor or even in a stool like you have! Boy, is it tough getting old. Will you be bolting and unbolting the lathe to the stand to get it into your vehicle?
@MikePeaceWoodturning

If I had to transport a mini I would carry my Jet 1014 at 72# vs the Laguna at 40# heavier! I will probably leave the rubber feet on the lathe. Will have to wait and see after I finish the stand.

how did you determine how high you wanted the lathe to be? I think mine might be to low my shoulder tends to hurt after turning i am 6 foot 3 so everything is normally to short for me. do you reference off a point on your body, like with a workbench top set to the height of your wrist off the floor. any advice would be appreciated thanks
