This video's probably created thousands of trees all across the world by now, and will create thousands more. My story: I used it not with Emerald Greens, which is based on the Eastern White Cedar, but Green Giants, which is based on Western Red Cedar X Japanese Cedar. The process worked exactly the same, with root hormone and sand as the medium. Back then, a 6 foot tree Green Giant - being a newer and more desirable arborvitae species than the Emerald Green(or any other cedar) - was around $130 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ contractor's discount, which i was certainly NOT buying more than 1 of. So, since I had already purchased this 'main' tree 2 years prior and it had already rooted and begun to grow strongly, I cut all the propagation stems off it that I could - without hurting the tree or its look - which equaled 30 potential cuttings to propagate. After a few years outside in Boston's temperate climate of scolding summer heat and freezing winter cold, snow, ice, etc., come the 3rd year's spring, I dug up each cutting and checked for roots. Out of the 30, 25 had rooted successfully; way more than I had hoped for. I dug each one carefully out of the sand and individually potted them up. I brought them inside my heated garage and began a process of taking them inside at the end of every fall and bringing them out at the beginning of every spring. My garage, being warm and having very large metal frame and non-insulated glass windows, transmitted great light through to the trees, so they grew all year long, being evergreens. Within 3 years they were all around 5 feet. I sold about 15 off when they reached 6 feet, making far more money than the $130 I spent on the initial Green Giant and the $5 I spent on root hormone, so thanks Mike for making this free for me and even allowing me to earn money off it. Needing only 4, I kept the rest for myself, found places in the yard for a couple others, gave a few more to neighbors/friends, and still have a couple left that I keep for backup and use as decoration such as in front of the house with Christmas lights strung on them. Now, the ones I planted on one side of my yard for a privacy hedge are easily 18-20 feet tall, and that's over an 8 year period. They grew from 10 inches to 6 feet in the garage in 3 years, and then shot up to 18-20 feet in only 5 years outside, partial sun, in a mix of compost and native soil; no chemical fertilizer. Anyway, that's my story, so thanks Mike for saving me 100's of dollars and teaching me two important lessons about gardening and life. A) Gardening is often more mental than physical, and B) Life is made easier if you think your plan through fully and broadly before you act. Thank you.

What time of year did you do your cuttings ?
@steve8450 Жыл бұрын
@mariemarshall1804 These days, if I'm feeling lazy, at the mid or end of fall, when I trim(shear) them, then just pick the sheared pieces off the ground that look good for cuttings and start them inside garage in small soil or peat filled pots, skipping the sand step. If feeling productive, I'll start the process by trimming in late spring, which I do anyway, but I'll collect the pieces from the ground like above, and instead of putting 20 or so of them in garage soil pots, I'll put 50+ of them in the sandy area I made so many years ago now for just this purpose in the back of the house. The ones inside root quicker due to the warmth of garage and nutrients of soil, but the ones outside in sand you can stick in and forget about for 2-3 years. Depends what system you want. Can modify it further, obviously, depending on your needs.

Can't tell you how much you've inspired me Mike - sorry to see you're not around of late, but my wife's getting sick of me re-running most of your videos. Been recently searching out my calling in life (we bought a derelict cottage in Ireland about six years ago) It's been a husband and wife show for that time; fencing, digging, making loads of mistakes in the process. This whole journey began because of growing and only now, we're getting into it. Since I subbed to your channel, we've grown nearly 600 trees from seed and have another 600 or so plants coming from cuttings. Thanks Mike, I hope this finds you well.

Mike, thanks for this video. I watched it a couple of years ago and followed your instructions. I successfully rooted 7 -arborvitae from my existing trees. It was more of a fun experiment for me. I started with 14 cuttings, but I killed 5 trying to check them for roots. I finally stopped checking them and the rest rooted fine. You will know they are rooted when you start getting new green tips on them. I lost two extras when I repotted them, but again it was my fault. I still have 7 plants and they are about 10-12 inches tall now. I learned a little bit from my experiment and had fun. Now I have some extras to plant along my driveway.

This about my "Six Week Rule". In northern Ohio the six week rule is typically June 1st. So that means that in southern Ohio the six week rule would probably be around the third week of May. You have to find your own six week rule. The Six Week Rule Here's the thing with softwood cuttings. Forget about what they say online (as if I'm not online pumping out info online!) about bloom date etc. If you follow the six week rule you can't go wrong as far as timing is concerned. From the day plants get their leaves in the spring, count ahead six weeks. During that six week period the plant actually produces, for you, about 5 or 6 inches of new, soft growth that can be used for softwood cuttings. That new growth needs six weeks to harden off enough to be used as a softwood cutting. If you take the cuttings too soon, they will wilt down and fail, but most importantly you will have wasted those cuttings. You can take a few, stick under mist, and see how they hold up. If they stand up, you're good to go. Some wilting is normal, but not laying flat on the rooting medium. So anytime after the six week date is good until the wood starts to harden off near the end of summer.

Ten o'clock in the morning I am out working on my roses and the new neighbor comes out drunk wanting to use my garden hose attached to my water faucet so he can clean inside his house??? No muffler on his banger car which comes and goes and comes and goes during the early hours of the morning; 1am, 2am, 3am, etc??? Finally, his wife or girlfriend starts flirting with me, a married man, as I'm working in my rose garden. $1000 dollars and three days of breaking my back later and I have a beautiful six foot high screen of 20 arborvitae trees between them and me! Thank you Lowes and Home Depot for selling them to me and taking my money for over-priced trees. Best money I ever spent. Can't even tell I have neighbors now. Good-bye, neighbors!

I did not need compound to root I just stuck them in really well fortified potting soil and in 1 week I checked 10 of 100 and they all had small roots Just make sure you have small cut branch nodules from lower branches to stimulate wound response . Another alternative is cut several hundred and mingle in willow cuttings with water. If tap let water sit to off gas chlorine then submerge willow is used to make rooting compound.

@@melissahenderson-hagadone5270 Yes but i have ZERO success on root growing. So lets recap. You make 10 roots out of 100 cuttings. And from those 10 only 6 have decent root growth. And 2 of those 6 died. Or from other 90. 84 have decent root growth and only two have died. because all of my cuttings have died without any roots whatsoever. And was months in the soil not week. Dormant first year cuttings can be rooted if the tree will allow it. Take your cutting, treat it with your desired IBA rooting compound, and keep it humid and warm in a perlite/vermiculite base. The dormant cutting will think spring has come and begin to initiate bud growth. Cells in the wounded to be rooting area will dedifferentiate and begin rooting. Some plants take to this process better than others and success rates can be low due to numerous variables. But the short answer to your question is yes, you can usually root dormant cuttings.

Ruth L, here's a reply from England. Don't do it! Cupressus leylandii are grim. They look good to start with but as they grow bigger you can't cut them back much because you can only prune to the 'green' and no further. If you try to prune into the 'brown' closer to the centre of the tree, it does not regrow and you are either left with a tree with brown patches (or brown all over!) or a tree which grows bigger and bigger and bigger because you can't cut it back much. Grow these Arborvitae (we call them Thujas in England). You can cut them back as hard as you like (after they are established) and they regrow. No brown section in the middle. Good luck.

@simpledj509chromo76 жыл бұрын
Some species of plants do better in a more aerated and well drained media than sand. In this case a perlite/vermiculite mix would be beneficial. Transplanting clones is a easy as hardening them off and dropping them into the soil. You may be able to lessen transplant shock by planting into the intended soil mixed with your rooting media. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. Really just depends on the tree. Some are very sensitive to transplant shock and you'll lose a few no matter how you pamper them.

(I don't do enough cuttings to justify buying different strengths & I like the powder better than the liquid, so I buy "hardwood strength" hormone & cut it with the appropriate amount of brick dust for softwood or leafy cutting. (I keep the brick dust in a pill bottle, next to the rooting hormone, so it's handy.)

Mike, Thank you for your video! it was very informative. However, I have a question about the optimal time to try to root the arborvitae. Would springtime work or should I wait until fall to do that? also, in another video of yours I have seen, you used a dish pan from Walmart to transplant another type of plant and then you put white plastic over it. Would that be ok to do for the arborvitae? By the way, I live in Illinois. Thank you! Iglika
