So you were saying that he doesn't ever take you out of the story with modern day parallel political or social rants. So true! But, he does an amazing job of covering of exploring some nodern issues in a very organic way. Especially addiction, depression, personality disorders and the cost of playing political games creates for the common folk. Love everything about series so far.

I agree with you that The Stormlight Archive has a shot at being this generation’s LOTR or WoT. At the least, it will be Sanderson’s masterpiece. To me, Sanderson’s greatest strength is his world building, and I especially like how he makes the magical system an important part of the plot, but The Stormlight Archive also features his best character work to date.

Read the prologue, you will know why you need to read this series :) Great characters, Very alien cultures with just the right amount in common with our own to be interesting. The format will seem strange at first with the epilogues breaking up the main storylines, but the further in you get, the more you appreciate the world building, and the impact they have on the overall story, and if you are a fan of Sanderson the Cosmere. The parallels are to real-life people. Certain things Dalinar does are ascribed to Ghengis Khan. However, that could just be the ‘all stories have been told’ folding of stories. There are other instances of this happening within the series. However, Dalinar being compared to the most successful warlord ever.... well, it’s accurate. I do want to add that my all-time favorite line from any author is Dalinar’s. “YOU... CANNOT... HAVE... MY... PAIN!” He accepts that he was a horrible person. But, he’s changing, becoming a better man. To some of us, it’s comforting to be shown (even a fictional character) a person who hates who he was and is strong enough to be more. It’s often a lonely path. Those who knew you no longer do. Sometimes you’re not sure you know yourself. Those who will know you haven’t met the new you, yet. But, you cling to the pain. It’s a reality. It’s a purpose, a drive. You cannot have my pain, because without it, I’m still the same man who hurt others for my own gain. And that pain taught me that in the end... I only gained scars in my soul to match the physical scars I gave.
@mikesbookreviews4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Dalinar’s arc is so earned.

I'm on Oathbringer on my 3rd reread of the series. Just such a great series.
@lathspell874 жыл бұрын
@OnThisSideoftheSky I rank them 1. Words of Radiance, 2. Oathbringer, 3. Way of Kings. Way of Kings is just very slow to get started, which I completely understand. The ending is amazing, but it is depressing for a while of Kalidan's story and Shallan's parts of kind of slow. Dalinar is still growing as a character and is just getting kicked around without fighting back, which is frustrating. Words of Radiance is so great. I don't think any of the book drags and it has an absolutely amazing ending. The 3rd Ideal scene is still my favorite in all the books... well.. there is one in Oathbringer that rivals, but I won't ruin that. Shallan's character also comes into her own in this book and I really enjoy her story, though she can be a little annoying when trying to be too witty, which is an intentional character flaw. Between the end and the arena scene, the book is just so amazing. Oathbringer is also very good, though there are a few slow parts. I love the fact that the radiants are out in open and appreciate the little things, like the meetings of leaders where they refer to the "Windrunners" as a real group when talking strategy. Just so cool to see after spending 2 books with that stuff in the shadows. There are also some gut-wrenching scenes in this book. I will say, I read the "Sanderlanch" too quickly on my first read through, and missed a lot. If you read that part carefully, Sanderson throws some small reveals in there that are easy to miss. Though Oathbringer's ending is great, with great reveals and action, the key reason Oathbringer is my 2nd favorite and nearly overtakes Words of Radiance is the Dalinar back story and character arc. He goes from being a very good character to the best character in the series. Dalinar's entire story and the mechanics going on in the background is SO FREAKING GOOD. I will not say a single thing about it because to ruin something like that for a new reader should earn one a ticket straight to hell. I think the book has more weaknesses that WoR, but the Dalinar arc covers for all of that. I remember the flashbacks in the others stories sometimes being distracting and making me just want to read quicker to get back to the story. Dalinar's flashbacks are related to the story and serve a purpose. Also, they are fantastic and just give Dalinar so much depth. EDIT: Oh, and Edgedancer is a must read. Great story and you meet a creature/race that you have only been hinted at, up to this point. Again, once you realize what they are, you start seeing them throughout the entire series.
@lathspell874 жыл бұрын
@OnThisSideoftheSky Enjoy! I do very much recommend reading Edgedancer before Oathbringer, strictly for continuity.

One of the big things that Stormlight has going for it is that if you ignore the fact that you could probably brain someone with one of the hardcovers, it actually reads much lighter than a lot of other high fantasy. Once you get past the eighteen prologues of the first book, it becomes really easy to read. I chalk this up to the fact that Sanderson's characters are all engaging and also people I want to root for (something I struggled with while reading GOT, since I get the urge to skim or skip POV chapters of characters I dislike, meaning that some sizable percentage of the book becomes a chore), and the fact that his prose is very utilitarian. It gets the job done without much flash, and he doesn't info-dump or detail-dump in his descriptions. It is unlikely you will ever need to reread one of his sentences because it was so complex you lost the subject halfway through. His style works to make the books far more readable than they might look based on length. Reading a lot of direct, clear prose is an order of magnitude easier than reading the same amount of very complex, flowery, and/or over-detailed prose.

Re: Wheel of Time No, 100% agreed. I eventually bounced off of the Wheel of Time when it devolved into "here's this earth-shattering event; I'm going to ignore the implications of said earth-shattering event to tell you about 3 characters on a boat from 6 books ago whose names and purpose you have no chance of remembering. What, you're still here and asking about the earth-shattering event? Well, I might answer one or two of your three dozen questions about it roughly 4 books from now. If you're lucky." And don't get me started on the Dramatic TV Show Cliffhanger Karma syndrome, where you knew with ABSOLUTE certainty that whenever ANYTHING good happened to a Main Character, within 3 chapters their lives would be utterly ruined by some surprise enemy attack or attempted assassination or Rand Doing The Magic Wrong Again(tm). I wanted to love it but it got SO FRUSTRATING to read. I think I made it to, like, Book 7 before I finally said "Enough is enough," cut my losses, and stopped buying them.

I remember reading Way of Kings back when it was still new. I had no idea what was going on for awhile, but I was so glad I stuck with it when it was over. I just started my re-read on audible. I didn't reread them when Oathbringer came out and I had some trouble remembering the previous 2. I won't make that mistake again.

If there is anyone who hasn't read it, you need to read Edgedancer. It takes place between books 2 and 3, features Lift, and takes care of a continuity issue Sanderson found he had between books 2 and 3. It's available as a stand alone or part of Arcanum Unbounded.

I didn’t read Edgedancer because I hate Lift but I’m 80% through Oathbringer and don’t feel like I’ve missed anything important. Even if there was something important in it, I just can’t bear to read more of Lift.

@@idlecurator5365 The continuity is about Nyn. He went from denying what was coming to accepting with no explanation. Edited to add: Plus we learn of another species of sentient beings.

@@sdube001 Who's Nyn? I don't remember the name and the best I can find on google is someone from Wheel of Time.
@sdube0014 жыл бұрын
I may have the name wrong, but Lift called him Darkness. He was the one who tried to kill her because she had the potential to become a Knight Radiant. Edit: I did have it wrong in terms of spelling anyway. Nalan, also known as Nin, is one of the heralds.

One of the best fantasy series of all time. Sanderson is an absolutely awesome writer, one of the GREAT. I started in late 2007 with Sanderson's books, as it turned out that he is writing WOT to finish.

Started with Way of Kings after several years (~6/7) of not reading a single book for entertainment purpose. In hindsight that has to be the dumbest place to start reading again... and I struggled through it for months, but at the end I'm glad I started there. One the story hooked me I was sold on the series, raced through the last couple hundred pages and immediately ordered the next 2 available books in the series.

It’s a slow burn but Sanderson rewards his fans that stick with it.

I seem to be the last WOT fan that hasn't read this yet. I did read Mistborn series (the original ones) when Harriet first chose Brandon to finish WOT, but they were just ok for me. I liked them, but I didn't love them. Then I read Warbreaker and I really loved it. I wasn't going to start another long series that wasn't finished though so I've held off. But I just finished a re-read of WOT and I'm having a hard time again where nothing feels good enough. I'm trying to decide if I start this or switch genres. Your review has helped, thank you.

Three weeks ago I started to read The Way of Kings. I'm half way through Oathbringer right now. I fell in love with this series in the second half of the Way of Kings. I just can't stop reading. At least I'll have weekly Rhythm of War chapters when I'm finished with Oathbringer.

Why should I read the Stormlight Archives... for the 5th time? Because it's rich and fantastic! Also, I forget things easily so it'll be a great to catch up(again) before the next release.

I normally refuse to start a series before it's done (George RR..) but Sanderson is my favorite so I'm all in. I read all of Wheel of time just to read Sanderson's two books at the end of that series. Edit I'm further into your video and you're saying the same exact things lol

That’s how I felt. Specially buying the way of Kong’s leather bound. But seeing how he’s one book away from finishing the first act I figured it’s close enough to risk it. George kinda just pisses me off that he feels like he doesn’t need to finish it. It’s his right it just feels really shitty as someone who bought into his stories.

For August I've been rereading my syfy anthologies: 1) omnibus of science fiction and 2) a treasury of great science fiction vol 1 and vol 2. My 70 year old eyes don't read the small print as well as they did 50 years ago. I rest more frequently.

If you are decent with technology, I’d recommend a kindle or an e-reader in general. They let you change the font size and some let you change the backlighting.

This might be a Sanderson hot take but I’ve always preferred the magic in Stormlight vs that of Mistborn. I think both are really good but there’s something just really good to me about the relationship with spren that makes it more personal almost? That’s why I love it so much

It has a very cool strange twist to it.

I think one of the things that makes the magic system so incredible is that what has been shown so far has been logical in concept and incredibly satisfying in execution. The magic we have seen has been so damn cool whether it is through a badass application of it in an action scene or a heart wrenching, emotional application of it that relates to character growth or change. The final thing that makes it so incredible is that we have only just started to delve into the magic system's totality after four huge books. There are still so many mysteries to be revealed. Given the amazing state it's in at the current point of Stormlight's plot, I cannot wait to see how incredible it as when the series is finally complete, so long as it stays consistent throughout.

I haven't started reading it however, I'm a big fan of swords and sorcery (as in Michael Moorcock, Robert E. Howard, or Fritz Leiber) and one of the major Staples of the genre is Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion series. The idea of the Cosmere immediately jumped out at me as similar to the 15 Planes. And the crossing over of characters made me think of Sailor on the Sea of Fate and The Vanishing Tower. Or Robert E. Howard's Kings of the Night, which is a Bran Mak Morn/Kull of Atlantis crossover. So I'm really looking forward to it. Also Michael Whelan as the cover artist! I recognize his work most from the DAW Elric paperbacks.
