Mistborn was my introduction to Brandon Sanderson too and I absolutely flew through this trilogy. I didn't realize the ending was divisive! I thought it was perfectly bitter-sweet and one of the best series endings ever. Watching your video and Daniel Greene mention it in his recent video on who should direct fantasy adaptations makes me want to reread the trilogy all over again!

I don't think it's hugely divisive but there are some who didn't care for the fate of certain characters and the ascension of another.

I think it was done very well too. Whether it's divisive or not, eh, maybe. It may not end the way some people may have wanted it to but I thought it was a fantastic ending to a series. Best I've read.
@josepharthur974 жыл бұрын
Mistborn was also my first Sanderson series and I loved it! In case you didn't know, Sanderson actually finished the trilogy before even realising the first one. Everything was planned beforehand and I think that is a reason for this series being so solid. Also, contrary to you and many people, book 2 is my favourite one. We've all read tons of books about defeating the bad guy, completing the quest or something like that, but with The Well of Ascension, it tackles the aftermath of that "happy ending" of book 1 and takes it from there. Everytime I finish a book or series, I always keep wondering what will happen to the world, to the characters, and most of the time we never get those answers. With TWoA we get that and even more, we realize that there were bigger threats, the world expands a lot and that thosen "happy endings" never really happen. Also, the finale is one of my favourite moments ever in a book, it's just brutally awesome that it gives me chills

I love the Mistborn series. The two elements that really drew me in were (1) The magic system. Allomancy is amazing and was like nothing I'd ever seen in fantasy before. (2) The heist aspect. Mistborn was a genre mash-up between epic fantasy and heist. Heist stories are always fun, but when you mash them up with sci-fi or fantasy, they are even cooler. I always recommend this as a great entry-point into the Cosmere.

Mistborn was my first Sanderson series too, and it holds a special place - it's hard to get that same sort of wonder and discovery for the types of worlds that Sanderson writes. As for the Lord Ruler moniker, I don't think I would say Sanderson is the best writer these days, but I would call him the best author - the way he's so transparent with his writing progress and process, how he's so involved in things (his lectures, his signing streams, the state of the sanderson, being active on reddit, being open about his publication experiences, etc.), the way he constructs his worlds and stories and characters, his acceptance of criticism and his efforts to improve without it seeming like just trying to pander to an audience - it's all so impressive and gratifying to see.
@mikesbookreviews4 жыл бұрын
I will definitely say that the way he communicates with his fans probably influenced my opinion of how highly regarded I hold him. It was just so frustrating after seeing fantasy authors either be shitty to their fans who ask about the next book or just stop seeming to care at all about writing. It's a combination of things. His storytelling, plus his incredible output, combined with his writing make him far away the best in the business right now.

This is one series I'm currently reading and I'm seriously loving it. Just started The Hero of Ages and I'm about 70 pages into it. The ending to The Well of Ascension was incredible. Vin is officially one of my all time favorite protagonists of any genre. Her arc is just so damn good. Especially in The Final Empire where we get to see her start to come out of her shell for the first time and learn about herself. Her and Kelsier's chemistry is very good too. Sanderson put a lot of care into deveoping these characters. Really liked the scenes where he's teaching her. The scenes where she goes to the balls are also great. Also, this series has the most epic backhand and most brutal backwards head-butt I've ever heard of. Can't wait to see what happens in this last book.

I'm definitely one that holds Mistborn Era 1 in really high regard for multiple reasons. Back in 2008, shortly after I got into High school and the Harry Potter series ended I felt lost (as usual when you finish a series you grew up with, loved and don't want to leave). So one of my good friends (who's not generally a fantasy reader) kept praising The Mistborn trilogy and swearing it'll fill that void. It was an amazing ride! It not only introduced me to Sanderson and made him my favorite author but also opened my eyes to discover adult fantasy and all the different types of Fantasy subgenres.

Loved these books, yeah they're not perfect, still highly enjoyable. Very accessible, easy reading. Book 1 is my favourite. Guess I'll have to wait for spoiler videos to get into specifics. I had vivid dreams of coin jumping around the city when i first read it. Not exactly YA, a little more so than WoT, which has some pg-13 moments. for what it is, it's an awesome series; some great characters, some good arcs (some not so good). I can see how the endings irked some readers, but even if you really dislike them the journey there is still worthwhile. It's like the opposite of a WoT slog. I personally did not mind endings. Easy 4/5 stars
@mikesbookreviews4 жыл бұрын
Agree on all points. There was never a sloggy moment where I didn't want to see what happened next. And now that I've come to appreciate his political storytelling all the more, I'm sure WoA would be better re-reading now.

I love Brandon Sanderson and I love this series, and his ability to regularly put out work is a big part of why he's my favorite current fantasy author. Patrick Rothfuss and GRRM both captivate me just sligggghtly more-per-novel, but their inability to keep it up leaves Sanderson as my favorite overall.

Mike's Book Reviews Only doenside to Era two is that Book 4 (The Lost Metal) is not out yet. So when you read it keep in mind that Brandon originally wrote The Allow of Law (Book 1) as a way to stretch his bones, but liked the characters enough to decide to write three more books in Era 2. Books 2-4 are planned to have more of story arc, (though again book 4 isn’t out yet) and you could say that The Alloy Of Law is kind of a “Prologue book for lack of a better term. One more thing. In era two the scale is dialed back to be more man v man then in era one. So adjust your expectations accordingly. I just wanted to give you the heads up, in case this might impact your potential enjoyment.

I appreciate many of your PoVs. I'm very similar. Nostalgia plays a real role. I'm not interested in modern politics or agenda i the slightest. I will say I'm not as fond as grey characters--sure, everyone has flaws and I'm not looking for perfect--but I'm also not interested in evil being good and good being evil. The Mistborn series was very fun. Being careful on spoilers--it does flip a few normal fantasy elements on it's head. I liked that--but the characters were good.

Yes! Love me some Mistborn! Breeze is the best! I'm currently reading the powder mage trilogy by brian mcclellan, and it feels like a borderline rip off of mistborn.. so I look up the guy and turns out he was Sanderson's apprentice, so now it feels like a hommage and I'm digging it👍

Mistborn was among the first Sanderson books I read (well technically, I read his Wheel of Time books first, followed by Warbreaker, but THEN Mistborn). It's a solid series, but it does also have its flaws. I think in his earlier books, Sanderson was more skilled at developing magic systems and extrapolating worlds from them than he was at writing characters, and I think that's very apparent in this series. Many of the secondary characters have kind of one-note personalities, and even major characters like Vin feel a bit flat. I think there's a definite and marked improvement from earlier books like the Mistborn trilogy to later books like the Stormlight series or the Wax & Wayne books. Which is not to say Mistborn isn't good - it is.

I thought the magic system was pretty easy to understand, especially since it describes what burning each metal is doing in the scene.

I have the same “anxiety” as you regarding finished series because of ASOIAF but recently read Stormlight Archive books and they are unbelievable. Book 4 comes out in Nov and Sanderson is not going to stop there. It is a 10 book series, but like Mistborn, there are 2 distinct 5 book parts that will feel like finished series themselves. Oh, and btw, Mistborn is amazing as well.

I recently finished this trilogy, and I think you're spot on with the points you make! A lot of things I wouldn't even think about mentioning but when you said them I was like 'OH YEAH THAT'S RIGHT!' And I just read them, can't imagine giving such a good intro if I read them 3 years ago, so hats off to you. I just bought the first book of Era II but can't wait to start the Stormlight Archive to be honest. Some people have said that I must read Warbreaker before book 2 or 3 of SA, so I thought I might as well read Era II, Elantris, Warbreaker and Arcanum Unbounded before I begin SA, that way I'm probably just done with the 3rd book by the time the 4rd is published. Anyway, really enjoy your videos!

I'll try to explain why I think Final Empire is YA, but I'm not great with words. Beware minor spoilers. Final Empire is the gap between YA and adult fantasy. While it has dark themes, lots of violence, and a more mature story, it still feels like a YA book. The viewpoint of Vin is my main example. The romance between her and Elend is the #1 example, but her character development, the coming of age tale, and her interactions with the crew is what makes it have a YA feel. I also think book 1 is the only one with the YA feel. Books 2 and 3 are much more adult fantasy Just to clarify, I don't think the YA description is bad at all. In fact, I think Mistborn is the perfect series for young people to transition from YA to adult fantasy since the first book rides that line

When it comes to politics in fantasy I like when they borrow from ideas from political and economic theory. I just don't like when they're like okay now this one is America. And this one is Great Britain. This is about Brexit. This one country is like Russia and this is about the Cold War. I like when themes are borrowed from history but I dont want a moment to moment recreation.
@mikesbookreviews4 жыл бұрын
I agree. If you want to push your ideals of socialism or capitalism into a story or something, okay. But I don't need political allegory of Nixon or Trump or Thatcher or Boris Johnson. I want to escape into my fantasy and these types of things just pull me out of the story.
@ThatSayYou4 жыл бұрын
@@mikesbookreviews Exactly. I think one of the beautiful things about fantasy is that you can explore the themes of our society through the lens of taking place in a context that is different from our world. I think looking at it in a different perspective teaches you even more about the idea as a whole. Whether it be equal rights, environmental issues, slavery, religion, etc. I think looking at how these issues face a world different from mine gives me a greater understanding of these issues or at least is more interesting to read. Thats why fantasy that takes place in our world can be trickier to get right. Or to not come off as kind of cheesy.

I'm almost past half of WoA and you know what? I'm gonna disagree with the usual (maybe general) opinion of WoA, saying it's too slow on its pacing or that it lacks action. Maybe I'm too soon to say this, but nah, I love what's Brandon is trying to do with book 2. He had shown us what he can with Book 1, now he's just building up from where he left. There's tension, slowly creeping to explode at my face, and I would wait for that for as long as people say this book drags on and on. Personally, that's how I like reading series.

I enjoy it but I know it is a common criticism. The whole deal with (no spoilers) Cett in book two was holy shit moments. I think in a post Game of Thrones world, casual readers are much more into political maneuverings in fantasy than they used to be.
@Law-of-EnTropy4 жыл бұрын
@@mikesbookreviews I just got to Cett's part of the story and I'm excited how this plays out, considering how it started. Also, I guess that's why I loved Warbreaker so much. Going into the book, I half expected it to be full of action but as I went to realize it lean more on the political side of things, I ended up loving it more. The intrigue and the whole "how are they gonna get out of this situation?" feel had me more pumped than reading action. But! I must say, Brandon's writing of action is one of the BEST I've seen, and I will not disregard that. Which is why I'm just waiting for the build up, because I know (intuitively) how it's gonna end up, I just wanna know how.
