Excellent video that thoroughly covers the basics. Crediting which runner scored as a result of an RBI can be tracked more efficiently by replacing RBI hash marks with the batting order number of the runner(s) (not jersey number). In the example above: Bellagamba's (2)RBI home run scored batters #3 & #4... write "3,4" instead of "II". This modification can eliminate confusion, especially when sorting out complex situations. Would love to see how mikescottbaseball handles the dropped third strike both in batter-runner out and batter-runner safe situations.

Most scorebooks have more than 9 innings in them, so what's usually done is, you simply cross the inning number at the top out and renumber accordingly... So, if a team beats through the lineup in the 5th, you would cross out the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and renumber them 5,6,7,8,9. Of course, if the game goes into extra innings, you might have to improvise and use another page to finish the game. :)

Excellent tutorial. I do one thing a little differently. I don't keep track of the balls and strikes (too much work if you are just having fun, or in a rec league), so I put a tick mark for an RBI in the boxes that are there for the balls and strikes. Just personal preference.

Great basic tutorial. Personally I use "tick" marks to show where runners stopped on the bag. This shows legit 2B/3B hits over bags reached; plus dots too show runs instead of a filled in diamond. Keeps things clean. Finally, use numbers in the pitch count boxes so you know on which pitch a hit occurred.

FYI.... this is advanced score keeping and you do not need to write in everything like he shows you because some books are small and you dont have enough room to put everything. I keep track of the strikes, balls(helps with pitch counts too), errors, where a batter hit, stolen bases, and outs. I do not mark rbi's, runner advances on wild pitches, errors, etc. It's nice to know this but in reality games for kids in rec or travel ball does not need to have every stat until theybstart playing high school ball. Another thing if a player misses a ball trying to make a play it is not always counted as an error so if you're not sure ask the coach if he wants to record errors. Actually if you keeping book for kids under 12yo I wouldn't even worry about errors or stolen bases... pitch count (balls/strikes), outs and the runners/score.

Pitcher A pitches to Batter 1 who flies out to right field. Batter 2 reaches on base on balls. Batter 3 doubles, Batter 2 reaches third base. Pitcher B relieves Pitcher A. Pitcher B pitches to Batter 3 and the ball reaches the backstop. We’ll call it a passed ball to take Pitcher B out of this scenario. (If it is deemed a wild pitch the impact on earned runs is the same). Batter 2 scores on the passed ball. Batter 3 advances to third on the passed ball. Batter 4 grounds to the pitcher and is thrown out at first, but Batter 2 scores on a fielder’s choice. Batter 5 grounds out to short and the inning is ended. What runs are earned in the above scenario, if any? (Rule 9.16 in the rule book, Earned Runs and Runs Allowed)

What do you do if the bats around the order, a batter hits twice in one inning
@charlessmith263
@charlessmith263 3 жыл бұрын
Special terms I am thinking of.... IF - Infield fly. Since the batter doing that IF is automatically out before the ball is caught, just put in the player number who caught the IF, like 1 (for pitcher). GRD - Ground Rule Double - do 2 lines for HP to IB and IB to 2B. Put GRD in the pitcher's area, since the batter who hits the ground rule double can only advance to 2nd and no more than that. More abbreviations..... FK - foul strikeout - in this case, usually the foul strikeout is in 2 ways - FK - T - foul strikeout by foul tip FK - BF - for foul strikeout by bunting foul on 2nd strike

Baker did not score the last out, nor did not reach base that inning. His at bat was never completed so it does not count as an official at bat. When he returns to the plate, he will start with a fresh 0-0 Balls and Stikes count as well. His at bat does not "continue". Scott does earn an RBI on that FC. Yes.

I know this was awhile ago but I do it similar to if they were caught stealing. Draw the line halfway between 1st & 2nd, but instead of writing 2-5 (like catcher to shortstop for example) I write 1-3 (pitcher to 1st baseman). You can also write “PO” for pickoff next to the line halfway between 1st & 2nd. Hope this helped!

For the batting purposes, only an error. On this card only the E2 would be tallied. If you were on the other side and keeping the pitching stats, the pitcher would still be awarded a strikeout, despite the error occurring. That run, if he ever comes to cross the plate, would be unearned and not count against his ERA.

If the team bats around, let's say in the 3rd inning, what you do, is this: you go to the 4th column, but cross out the number and write 3rd, and then continue filling in as normal. For the 4th inning, you use the 5th column, so you have to cross out the 5 and write 4, and you do this for every subsequent inning. Most scorecards have at least 10 innings, so it usually works out fine.

In the leagues I've scored for, there are scorekeepers for both teams, and each one keeps a page for each team. In the scorebook, you normally use facing pages so that you have one half of the game on one side, and the other half right across from it. The coaches are going to know what happened during both halves of the inning, and it's handy to have someone to compare notes with.

To quote the MLB Glossary: "A batter does not receive a plate appearance if a runner is thrown out on the bases to end the inning while he is at bat." Baker is not credited with a plate appearance (PA) in that situation, so he gets to go up first in the 4th inning.

A lot of scorecards have more than nine columns, so you can enter stats for extra innings played. What you could do is use one of those, and write the inning number (4) at the top to show the continuation. So in this video, if the fourth inning meant that Baker batted twice, I would move across to the furthest right extra column and enter his details on the 6th line down. The reason I'd use the furthest right column is that if the game goes to ten innings and you've put the continuation of inning four right next to inning nine, then you'd have the columns in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 4, 10 ... which would be a bit confusing. You could then in theory fill in nine more at bats in the fourth inning, although the chances of getting 18 batters at the plate in one inning are slim. :-)

Once they get 3 outs you will have to mark the remaining inning numbers out and put the correct # in so the book is correct with the game. Hope this helps.
