Why Kids Have Bat Drag ++++Best Drill to Fix it!
Understanding why players drag the bat is important as the teacher. It puts you one step closer to improving swings naturally without the robotic mechanical drills that are usually introduced to youth hitters way too early. I am including the best drill I know for compensating for what kids think hitting is.

Great video. I'm obsessed with correcting this exact issue. It's an epidemic in youth baseball. Best video I've seen addressing this issue

I've watched countless videos trying to fix my 2 boys' "bat drag" issues & yours are by far the best at explaining the root of the problem! This drill with a high, inside tee position & having them try to hit low line drives at the 2nd baseman sounds perfect!...I'm taking them outside right now to work on this! Thanks a million!!

Love the teaching approach, especially with kids. They have to feel the body position, rather than be told to comprehend. It works. Great stuff!!

Great stuff coach. This is a novel approach: to get the player to “feel” the proper body motion- rather than drill all of the minor details.

I tried this out myself tonight in the cage. It really gives you the feeling of what getting your hands inside the ball feels like. That's great for kids (or anyone really). I also like that you are looking for a ball flight as feedback. I will definitely add this to the toolkit.

Ron, this is great stuff thank you so much for posting. Couple questions on how to properly do this drill. 1. Do you stop the swing with the arms extended straight forward through the ball like they look in the video? 2. Do you stand causally straight up when swinging instead of leaning "over the plate"? 3. Do you start the swing from launch position i.e. as if already strided? Or just stand comfortably? Thank you!
@RonSullivanHitting
@RonSullivanHitting 3 жыл бұрын
1} I think I stopped when I hit the weighted ball. I don't like the idea of stopping when a player is on their feet hitting real balls. 2)I think naturally you will be more upright when a ball is positioned up and in. 3) Just a nice balanced position, maybe a little wider than shoulder-width. Thanks for the questions!

Thank you, fix approach and get better mechanics! I teach to lead with the knob of the bat then barrel follows, get hip s involved, and approach swing as a punch from right hand, and extend pull with the left, if you r a right at bat and opposite for lefty.

Ron. I do think the combo of how bat is held and strength of kid can cause the bat drag. Bat held with tilt with knob angled straight back (vs knob to catcher)...I see kids pulling knob towards pitcher too much and dragging. I believe that the majority of dragging in most is as you describe, but I do think there are cases where it is the combo of strength and how bat is held.

I agree there can be other things that contribute. The pattern I am talking about here is what I most commonly see from my in-person evaluations and parents that send video to me. Thanks for commenting Eric!

Ron, when you say hit the third base side of the ball what do you mean? Your videos and instructions are awesome.
@hugo_lechuga1110
@hugo_lechuga1110 3 жыл бұрын
what he means by that is if your a righty third base is on the left so as a righty u want to put the sweet spot on the third base side/ inner half of the baseball.

My 7yo is 15/15 batting right now on coach pitch but he drags bad. Should I use a lighter bat for drills to make it easier on him. He’s a small kid. I kinda don’t want to mess with him too much mid season. I’m happy when his feet, hands, and head are right at this age lol

I wouldn't change anything right now. I usually advise dads with players before kid-pitch to hit a lot of moving targets...build the natural hand-eye coordination first and then when kid pitch gets closer to get a little more hands-on. As you pointed out, the basics can''t be ignored, like stance and grip.

What do you think about your fellow KZbinr hitting guru Jaime Cevallos. He would say the left side approach is the correct way to do it.
@RonSullivanHitting
@RonSullivanHitting Жыл бұрын
I don't think that the appearance of what is happening on the left is always wrong. However I do think in terms of approach at a ball sitting still it shows a player that will lack adjustability in their overall approach and fundamentally doesn't understand what "get inside the ball" is.

The lobbed coach pitch ball is also a problem with my grandson. I’ve been working on his swing and as soon as he encounters that coach pitch lob ball he goes right back to bat drag. Only a few games left. In his back yard he has a nice swing, thanks to Ron’s drills.

kinda confused about not wanting the front arm straight. Are you saying you dont think its smart to teach kids that bc you rather give them feel vs real? I feel like a good swing is between those two slow-mo's.
@RonSullivanHitting
@RonSullivanHitting 3 жыл бұрын
As a teacher I have to teach feel. I didn't say you don't want the front arm straight. I always teach that flexion in the front arm should be a product of working in a shorter direction. If you are standing on top of a tee set up inside, up in the zone, and you have any kind of decent approach on the tee you will probably have flexion in your front arm.

@@RonSullivanHitting Bullshit. I am a pro instructor that has worked with players from 6 yrs old to numerous MLB guys. "Using too many words" is not the porblem of the talker, it is the problem with the listener. That is such an issue these days. It is crucial that a good teacher thoroughly explain not only what, but WHY things must happen. That takes a lot of words especially on topics that are complicated and not understood. If too many of the words are unnecessary than yes, that is no good. But when the words spoken are crucial, then they must be spoken. So to the commentor, LISTEN to every word and understand what he is saying and why he is saying them. Teaching human body movements along with kinetics and physics is not ordering McDonalds. You want a cheap burger made in 30 seconds or a top notch steak that takes 15 minutes to cook?
