Honestly, I've gotten worse at cutting my hair over time, cause I got overly confident with my skills. The last cut I gave myself, I accidentally went way to high with a #1 on one of my sides. So im rewatching hair cutting tutorials, but also thinking of just going to a barber to fix the mess of my last haircut..

I used to spend $35-45 for a haircut. Low/medium skin fade, tight on the sides and short on top was my always go to style. I was young and had a decent salary job and I was single and always wanted to look good so I always paid that amount at least every 7 days. Usually get a cut on Thursday or Friday to get the weekend right. After many times of seeing my haircut is cut the way I like it, i gave it a try on my own. Took me about 5-6 haircuts on my own and watching lots of videos I then finally got it right. It's been 5 years since I've been to a barbershop. My old barber retired so I didn't feel guilty that I can no longer give my business. I did invest in decent clippers that cost me $100 and is lasting me for many years now. Cutting your own hair takes patience and lots of confidence during the first attempts but once you find your groove, you realize how much money you saved.

I used the strategy from this video first on myself, and later on my two brothers. It really is tough to have appropriate depth perception in the mirror, but I eventually got my own done. Completing my brothers’ cuts was quite easy at that point. I would recommend, if possible, just finding another guy and cutting each other’s hair. Also, as blondes, this isn’t a super noticeable fade, which is exactly what I wanted. You might have to lower the lowest depth to 4 or 3 mm in order to get a really noticeable fade for blondes. Thanks for making this video!!
@MikeShake4 жыл бұрын
It takes a while to gain confidence using the mirror. Anyways I'm glad the video was helpful! For a better fade, instead of using the 4 and the 5 in the lowest area, you could repeat the same process using the 2/3 then the 4 then the 5. Just consider that the lower you go the harder it gets (every mistake becomes more noticeable), but in the end it's all about practice

For the life of me I could never do the very back of my neck, the ears and the side of my neck are easy, but that very back strip my hands just wouldn't move right looking in the double mirror. Then I discovered the joys of hair scrunchies or rubber bands in a pinch, you have to play around with it a bit to get it to stay put but once you have it in place it makes a nice guide line that you can follow, that way you can do the back without looking. Then you just kind of touch up the corners where the base lane meets the side and round them out a bit. Been doing this for a little over 3 years and every time I give myself a haircut I put the would be spent money in a jar and use it for items on my wishlist. I stash roughly $20 a month with a couple skipped months, and so far it has paid for a kayak, a backpacking pack, a new pair of shoes, and various little hiking accoutrements. All money that would have been spent on haircuts oy vey!
@iannoble86264 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about, say, getting the angle right to get a neat edge at the back of the neck, I struggled, but then I found a different trick for it (or one that works for me, at any rate), that doesn't involve extra equipment, other than the usual pairs of mirrors. It's basically mental - forget the tricky job I'm doing and do an easier one. As you'd expect I stand with my back to a fixed mirror, looking in a hand mirror so that I can see the back of my neck. I hold the clippers between fingers and thumbs with the blades below my hand, like I might a really thick pencil (just like the guy in this video). Lift my arm so that the clippers are behind my head, clearly. Now the trick. I just ignore the mirrors, etc. and concentrate on cutting the hair of "the guy in front of me". It's a bit like using a computer mouse to play a game. Apart from a bent elbow the movements are exactly the same as if that's what I was doing, and if I ignore what's really happening my brain doesn't get confused and I find my fine control comes back. One thing I would recommend to anyone cutting their own hair is (if you can source one during all the current mayhem) get hold of a proper hairdresser's hand mirror to hold in front of you. Search for "salon hand mirror" or something like that. They're large, rectangular and light, and you can get a perfectly decent one for about £8 ($10). You see what's going on WAY better tthan in the sort of hand mirror you're likely to have around for other purposes.

I served in the army of my country. Before that I'd never had an experience of cutting someone's hair. But in the army you have to keep your haircut short and trim, so soldiers usually cut their comrades' hair. I started from simply cutting hair to one length. Then I tried to make fade. This skill was pretty valuable among soldiers because everyone wanted fade for some reason. At first things didn't go very well (first person whom I trimmed never came again:)), but soon I gained experience and became able to do pretty nice simple haircuts. When I came home, I tried to cut my one hair and it was not so difficult. Since then I've never visited a barber shop.

I have been cutting my own hair for almost 10 years. No regrets, I even get compliments on it. Guess I have been getting better.
