*NOTE - 10w 60 is the updated spec for engine oil for the Breva. I quoted the user manual in the video which was superseded in a later service bulletin.

The small block Guzzis didn't change that much over the years. The only major mechanical difference between our bikes is the four valve head on the Lario. We are a long way from the fires but the smoke has been quite thick on some days. I believe the smoke made it all the way to NZ at one point.

@mattgibbs5252
@mattgibbs5252 3 жыл бұрын
Incidentally, you mention the dipstick level - an ongoing point of contention amongst V7 750 owners. I have a 2010 V7 Cafe - really a Breva engine I realise now. I'm assured now to check the oil with the dipstick screwed in, with the correct level showing at the top of the hash marks - not screwed out, sitting on the threads as V7 750 manuals suggest, giving a level just above the lower straight line on the dipstick. Once you've done an oil and filter change, and added 1.8L of oil, clearly, with dipstick screwed in, the level is at the top of the hash marks.
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. The 2009 owners manual says that the dip stick should be screwed in to check the level. Whereas the 2011 manual says it should be screwed out. But both manuals quote the same quantity of engine oil.
@TheMrlukag
@TheMrlukag 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I think that the both versions of manuals (as Mr. Mike described below) are correct. Since I speculate that it is the same as if you put dipstick screwed all down and at 1.8L of volume,the oil level is shown at top hash marks; and same, if you do not screw dipstick, then correct level is at that low line on the dipstick. What I am trying to say is that both methods are correct.

Thank you for a very helpful series of videos. One question - what is the Sump Spacer and what is the advantage of having one fitted? Thank you from Cornwall.
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines Жыл бұрын
The larger volume of oil doesn't work as hard which reduces wear and tear on the engine between services (changing the oil more frequently would have a similar effect). It also aids to some degree in engine cooling.

On some videos on changing the oil on a v7, they only eemove the rear oil drain plug. Does the v7 only have one rear drain plug? Is the rear plug enough to drain the oil on a Breva?

Hay mate love your vids , I used your used your 1130 Benellli service Vid when I had one . I’m thinking of buying the new V85TT , in a few forums owners have said about overheating problems in over 35 degrees sitting in traffic or extended riding over 42 degrees. You mentioned a larger oil capacity ? the V85 only has 1.6 lts and has no oil cooler ( ca a oil cooler or larger oil capacity sump be fitted ) Regards Paul
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 жыл бұрын
The V85 uses a dual oil pump and runs a semi dry instead of a wet sump. The factory claims the V85 runs cooler because of this and doesn't require an oil cooler. Fitting an oil cooler to any of the small block Guzzis is difficult and I've not seen any aftermarket kits to date. Sump spacers typically give you a couple of degrees of cooling but I haven't seen any advertised for the V85.

Dear Mike, thank you very much for your Breva videos, they are so helpful. One question, it might sound beginner (which I am in terms of Moto Guzzi actually), but I can't find the info, not even in the manual: What wrench/nut sizes do I need to remove both motor oil drain bolts? Thing is I'm going to pick up a Moto Guzzi (Breva 750, 2008) from a place 14 hours away and I need to bring the right tools for oil changes, new battery, draining the old fuel etc. (the Breva has been sleeping there for more than two years, long story). Thank you and kind regards from Peru 🙂
@MikesMachines

You need a 17mm & a 22mm spanner to remove the oil drain plugs. I hope it all goes well 🙂

Have you ever changed the fuel filter and/or the fuel hose? Can you show us? Where is it located?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 5 жыл бұрын
The fuel filter is located inside the fuel tank with the fuel pump. It's pretty easy to change by turning the tank when empty upside down and removing the pump assembly . I plan on doing a video on this at some point when ours needs a new filter. The fuel line quick disconnect fitting can be a bit tricky so Google it first.

Why does it have 2 drain plugs?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 жыл бұрын
The sump isn't flat inside and retains a bit of oil if only drained from the main plug.
@kjb9001
@kjb9001 2 жыл бұрын
This is because the oil pick-up tube is part of the oil pan casting. One plug allows to drain the oil from the bottom of the oil pan, the second allows for draining the oil from the pickup tube and engine oil pump section.

Any sort of torque specs for the oil filter bolt? I am having a bit of an oil seep at the washer and not sure if I am too loose. Don’t want to tighten it anymore until I get an idea how tight it should actually be
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 жыл бұрын
If it's weeping oil it's most likely the crush washer under the filter cover bolt that's the culprit. They flatten out over time and leak. I change the crush washer and the cover o-ring every second service.
@Deetroiter
@Deetroiter 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikesMachines thank you for the information! I had the bolt only tightened to around 8-10nm...after some searching, the service manual suggests 18-22nm! I torqued it to that but haven’t had a chance to run it and check. If still seeps, I’ll check that washer. Thanks again mate!

Greetings from Greece. Do you think the engine burned oil because you used 10W-40 instead of of 10W-60? Did you notice any difference in oil consumption when using 10W-60 oil? This engine has the advantage of not having a wet clutch, meaning you can use ceramic additives in the oil (I use Ceratec or Ceramax).
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 5 жыл бұрын
Our Breva has used some oil from new. I don't recall when the factory updated the oil spec but our bike certainly used 10w - 40 until that point. It uses a fair bit more now but the bike has done over 120,000 ks.

Is it easily possible to fit an oil cooler to these small block motors?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 4 жыл бұрын
It is difficult to fit an oil cooler to the small block engine. A sump spacer is the best option. The extra surface area and larger oil quantity will drop the oil temperature by a few degrees.
