Johanna and Finnick do get to do more in the books! And yeah, Suzanne Collins actually admitted that killing Finnick was the one thing she wishes she could go back and change, at it happened because she was being rushed by the publishing house and basically added it for shock value because she did not have time to think of a more satisfying gut punch at that moment, especially with the stress all around her

As much as I hate that they killed Finnick, it’s realistic. In a war people don’t not die just bc they just got married or something. I think it adds to the realism of the series, in terms of the dynamics of revolutionary action. By the end of the series, although you are happy that they rebelled and won, that happiness is blunted by grief for everyone that was lost in the struggle.

Ngl, I’m so sad they cut Johanna’s story from the book. Her torture in The Capitol via being dunked in water and then electrocuted was so sad. I remember she was initially supposed to go with Katniss and Co. but when they all had to go through “tests,” she failed hers bc she had a breakdown when the room filled with water. She’s such a sad and tragic character, I wish she got to see more of her instead of focusing only on Finnick’s story.

I agree (it doesn’t help that I have extra empathy for a fellow traumatised Johanna). Were you reading too much fanfiction or did you read the series with your eyes crossed? Lol
@haydnflaxman22602 жыл бұрын
25:00 fun moment - Katniss had realised that Coin was just as bad as snow by this point, especially after the use of Gale’s hummingbird trap, and catch-up with snow. As a result, the only reason she agreed to the capitol hunger games was to ensure that Coin would not see her as a threat. Katniss essentially sucked up to Coin so that she could then assassinate her, without suspicion, to prevent another tyrannical dictator from repeating the horrors of the games.
@zeus-wp6oz Жыл бұрын
If you read the books then you’ll know it’s only when she’s about to kill snow that she realises that coin is evil. I love katniss but she’s always been very impulsive and never once in the book does she think that far ahead, that’s her whole thing, that she gets carried by her emotions and her humanity instead of cold hearted logic like gale or pure kindheartedness like peta. In the books, she votes yes for the hunger games out of pure rage for prims death, and that’s why haymitch votes yes too, because he sees the pain in her eyes and understands her like he always does. It’s only when she’s standing in front of snow that she really remembers the deal they made never to lie to each other (and how snow never did lie) and decides to shoot Coin and then kill herself, which she was going to do anyways because killing snow was the only thing she was staying alive for.
@бронза.вафля.конус4 ай бұрын
@@zeus-wp6ozYou know, I really disagree with this take. Out of all the tributes, Katniss is the one who blamed the innocent people least. It's so out of character for her to want to see innocent children, even Capitol children, die and kill each other even as "revenge". Killing those capitol kids won't bring back her sister nor would it make sense BC the kids did nothing wrong
@zeus-wp6oz4 ай бұрын
@@бронза.вафля.конус I think both interpretations are valid, honestly I should reread the books lol it’s been a while Katniss was definitely always a defender of the innocent but she’s also always had a vengeful side so both could probably be argued
@bobjenko4 ай бұрын
@@бронза.вафля.конус I agree. By the time Coin proposes the new games, Katniss has already figured out that Coin was behind her sister's death, not Snow. In the book, before the meeting Katniss is already putting the pieces together. She realises the only thing standing in Coin's way was her, so she could've put Katniss' underage sister on the frontlines and made it seem like Snow did it. Then, just before Katniss agrees to Coin's plan, she says internally, 'Nothing has changed. Now nothing ever will.' Then she says, 'I weigh up my options carefully, think everything through.' I truly believe it's at that moment Katniss knew exactly what she was going to do. By agreeing to Coin's plan and stating it was for Prim, she convinces Coin she's on her side and is trustworthy. After, while Haymitch is weighing it up, she internally says, 'we found out exactly just how alike we are, and how much he truly understands me.' She's essentially imploring him to agree with her plam, which is cemented by Haymitch's responses being that he's "with the Mockingjay." Not that he agrees, or even says yes. Just that he's with Katniss as the symbol. Finally, the shot. Katniss begins by aiming the arrow at Snow, then remembers his line about them agreeing not to lie to each other. He knows what Katniss is about to do, and she essentially is remembering not to kid around that she's going to shoot Snow. The target was Coin, so at that moment she raises the bow and kills her.
@бронза.вафля.конус4 ай бұрын

Also the way Katniss chooses for Peta makes much more sense in the books, in the second book it describes them being on tour and very slowly but surely building up a very personal relationship through their shared trauma. In the movie he just holds her when she has nightmares but in the book there was actually a really nice buildup to that moment to make it significant. Like you know it’s gotta be shock value, because he got married and everything. We don’t even get to see how Annie reacts to Finnick’s death 🥲💅 like Suzslay even gave her PTSD from the HG and now she’s just in the trenches
@bekahswanson2 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I think Suzanne Collins did that to display how tragic war is. She took an innocent bystander and made her the center of the war (Katniss), killed off two characters we loved and rooted for (Finnick and Prim), took a kindhearted boy and twisted his mind and turned him into something he swore he’d never become (Peeta), and took a character who lost everything and endured the worst but didn’t really find any resemblance of peace or healing (Johana). I hate the fact that Finnick died, but I think that’s what really made the story what it was. Collins wrote characters that we could sympathize with, gave us insights into their lives, and killed them off to demonstrate how casualties of wars and oppressive governments are human beings with their own feelings and stories. It’s fucking awful, but it’s affective storytelling.

@@iwakeupandboomimarat haha, its understandable that she would regret it, she made him and he was great! But also, it was the right thing to do for the plot. The book would have been less realistic if everyone we loved lived and I think it would have felt more "shock value"-y if only the really innocent characters (like Ru and Prim) died.

In the books the mutts are supposed to look like they used to be human (distinctly human eyes) but ig it’s kinda hard to rly get that vibe across in movie form when it’s not the main focus of the scene so they just didn’t do that
@ilovemybabyblues2 жыл бұрын
What’s even worse is that not only did Finnick die after FINALLY getting his happy ending with Annie, but she was also pregnant with their son at the time of his death (which I’m pretty sure they didn’t include in the movies). Neither of them (Finnick or Annie) knew she was pregnant when he went to the Capital with Katniss and then he never came home 😭😭😭😭

in the book it's left ambiguous if he had anything to do with the plan, although i'm sure if he knew, he didn't try to stop it. i'm always shocked people are so nasty about gale tho. dude lived under a violent, oppressive fascist system and lost literally everything in an act of genocide by the Capitol, presumably carrying some serious survivors guilt about not being able to save everyone in District 12. like, i'm not shocked at all he was willing to do anything to defeat the Capitol.
@marinemanaphy1012 жыл бұрын
OK actually about that Hanging Tree remix, my theory was always (internally, idk if it’s real) that it was a bit of an in-universe thing. The rebels broadcasted the original song, and part of the Capitol’s response is to make it into a remix that turns a sincere, emotional song into a simple party song. It’s very Chained to the Rhythm where the message about how pop music stops us from seeing that the world is falling apart is kinda undermined by the song being an incredible pop song, so you can be bopping along to it and not really connecting the dots.

@@marcellakilgarriff i keep thinking about what a departure it is to move on from Percy Jackson and Harry Potter books to young adult fiction like this where the stakes are so high, everything is so hard hitting it's almost real. The way they go from survival to escaping near death to hurting and traumatising each other and then what sort of holds everyone together is.. love. It almost makes the power of love in Harry Potter seem cheesy tbh. I kind of want to start reading Hunger Games again to understand why hordes of teens flocked to something so serious, maybe because we struggled with how layered our own psyches are.

when katniss says yes to the symbolic hunger games with the capitol’s children, she is intentionally misleading coin. katniss votes yes “for prim.” coin’s pov: katniss said yes bc she still believes that snow killed her sister. good thing she doesn’t know it was me. katniss’ pov: **already sending arrows through coin’s heart with her mind** additionally, haymitch votes alongside katniss bc, while he may not know the specifics, he trusts katniss’ judgment and knows there must be a good reason. his vote made coin’s assassination possible and allowed katniss to end another war before it even started
