I really enjoyed this , Mike, and the transcript was excellent: a great help with my poor hearing. Good to have a short video too, as I can't take the 2 hour sessions. You have reminded me about the 4 spur drive, when I've been irritated recently by slipping Steb centres. Emphasising about wet shavings was also well worthwhile, thanks. Bernard.

Thanks Bernard, glad you enjoyed it.

That will make a beautiful bowl, Mike. I'm a bit surprised you didn't core out the centre, but you know what you are doing and probably have good reason not to core it out. Cheers, mate, can't wait for the final turn.

Lovely work Mike. Eucalyptus is a tough beast to tame, it loves to crack and twist and do its own thing!

Well, you know me, I would have used the Big Ugly tool. They leave a much cleaner surface on end grain than side grain.... I still want to find time for a play date.... Need Star Trek Transporters!

Hi Mike, Great video with great tips along the way. Are you worried about the Eucalyptus cracking as every piece I have turned has badly cracked. Take care Mike. Cheers, Huw PS Looking forward to seeing this piece finished.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
To be honest Huw there is always that nagging doubt with all pieces I wet turn ... will it crack or will it not 🙂

Hi Mike. Great video! I've just been given a number of lumps of eucalyptus (uk), interested to know how this bowl turned out. i'm relatively new to woodturning, and a number of forums suggest that eucalyptus is not the best for turning due to cracking and voids appearing during drying... how did this bowl fare during drying? Is there a follow up video that i missed?
@MikeWaldt2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. Eucalyptus is renowned for cracking during the drying process, and this unfortunately was no exception. I did not do a follow up video as I recall, but I really should have. Take care Mike
@kevinsmith58902 жыл бұрын
@@MikeWaldt Many thanks for the quick reply Mike. My 11yo and I were looking forward to turning some of the big lumps - oh well, looks like I'll have to hide half a ton of eucalyptus around the wife's flower beds!

That is quite a large endgrain piece. Do you not expect massive cracking? I have not had good luck with endgrain bowls myself. I was surprised to see wet turning Eucalyptus in the UK! Although I know there is lots of Eucalyptus on the west coast of the USA. Why not, I suppose.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
It is a bit of a lottery regarding cracking ... fingers crossed us all I can do 🙂
@dennisferguson59703 жыл бұрын
Could you give us a monthly report on how it is drying, weight/% moisture change. I'm interested in whether you develop cracks in the bottom around the pithe.

If I remember I will Dennis 🙂
