It's fun to watch those long shavings come off the wet Walnut, Mike. Makes clean-up a little easier, too! As always, a well explained process and video. Looking forward to seeing this piece finish turned, I'll bet it's a beauty! 😊 Phil

No one has ever explained how to get those side walls thinner and lower this well. Thank you, Mike. I thought I was just poorly positioning or selecting my piece for a live edge. Frankly, I'm disappointed that I didn't figure that out for myself. :) Great video. I still prefer these over live streams, but I understand the benefits of those for content creators. Be well!

As that was from a limb, it must have been quite a walnut tree, Mike. Lucky you. I've just worked walnut for the first time, and it gave real pleasure. Good that you emphasised tightening up with green wood; I forgot last month, and only just got away with it. Looking forward to the result. Bernard.

It was a large tree by all accounts Bernard. Thanks for watching and sharing a story too 🙂

Well impressed with the way your Stratos XL handled that piece without a murmur. Most lathes would be shaking themselves to bits. Looking forward to seeing you finish that bowl in a few months.

Christian Burshard had an interesting method of drying Madrone, which if you don't know, it starts to split before you even take the chainsaw out of the shop/truck. He would put the bowl blank inside a paper bag, and then put that inside a plastic bag. He would change out the paper bags every day. This allowed the madrone to dry out 'not too slow, not too fast, just right". Did you ever try out those inside bowl rests I sent? They will be back out on the market, but not made by me, just about any time.... so much better than a straight rest... Looks like your tool rest post is bigger than 1 inch.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a great method Reed. I do still use your rests as well as my Robust ones. Good news that they are being manufactured again. Hope your keeping well my friend. Take care. Mike

Things are going well. Had my shots. The swimming pool is open again so I can go swimming when ever I want and for as long as I want. Need some wood though. I do have a stack of bowls to sand out though....

Nice job Mike wet wood is great to turn also that lathe is savage I'd have been walking around the workshop after mine, I noticed the walnut has no dark heartwood the walnut around my area would have about 75 percent dark heartwood anyway great Job Mike please to watch you in action 👌👍

Thanks William ... I have to say it is a rather pale specimen. Thanks for watching.

Is the color typical of European Walnut? Here in the states the heartwood especially, but even the sapwood has an almost purple tinge to it in addition to be much darker.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
This is a very pale specimen I have to say.
@stephanielovatt27873 жыл бұрын
That log must have taken a fair effort to mount on the lathe! It was interesting to see so much white wood, as most of the walnut I see, on other channels, has a lot of dark wood.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, it was a heavy piece for sure, and yes your a pale example of walnut.
@dbull463 жыл бұрын
Great video Mike, love turning green wood its so satisfying. I will try the paper bag method because I've used a cardboard box with shavings before on several speices but even after as little as 2 weeks, the mold starts to grow. Do you think if I have packed the shavings in to tight not leaving enough breathing space? Thanks again Dave
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. I must say that I pack it loose ... but sometimes even then mouls appears. So much depends on the ambient temperature and humidity. Thanks for watching too.
@dbull463 жыл бұрын
@@MikeWaldt Thanks Mike again. A bit of research shows that mold thrives between 25 and 30 degs C so I'm thinking Autumn and winter here and coming is a good time to crack on with some green turned bowls. Planning to keep them a good bit cooler to start then I will coat them in paraffin wax to finish the drying process which has served me well so far. Slowly slowly wins the race!!! Luck to of found a friend with a good supply of some apple and pear so really looking forwards to working with that. Thanks again Mike. Take care and keep them coming.

I almost always take a moisture content reading a few days after, then leave it for a couple weeks then take more moisture content readings at various intervals, usually around 3 weeks apart. Depending upon whether it is stored in winter or summer, as well as the thickness and type of wood you can more accurately work out the drying speed with a moisture content meter. The Aldi unit is fine, you are only after a figure and the speed; Aldi Australia that is. Nice gouge, I would have used my 22mm gouge at the start. Pieces with heft like this one, are a very different feel with a larger size and weight gouge. Would have been nice to have metric sizes on the timber, not just inches... I'll be waiting to see the finishing turn.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for advice Allan, I do have a moisture meter and periodically take a reading during the drying process. Thanks for watching.
