I turn a bowl in a bowl for a present. Stating with a very wet piece of Cherry that was uprooted because of heavy snow.
Using my drying box made it very quick to dry and get turned.
I used Zinsser Seal Coat and Shellac for the finish
I then polished it off the lathe using Acks Sanding Paste.

Gary, another interesting project. If you boil the rough turned green bowls in water for about 1 hour per inch of thickness, it will prevent splitting and it greatly reduces the distortion that happens when the wood dries. The boiling softens the lignum in the wood and relives the internal stress in the wood. Let the wood cool in the water overnight or you will get a lot of surface cracks from the wood cooling too fast. This is similar to kiln drying. Do NOT use your wife’s good pots for doing this….lol. For small projects you can use one of those old black canning pots. I use a half 45 gallon drum with a propane burner outside. This process is wife approved. I boil fruit tree wood and some of the other local wood I get that is prone to splitting when it dries.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rick and thanks for the tips on boiling. I have heard about but never explained this well. I have a few stainless pots. One is 8 gallon and the other 10 gallon. I used them for making home brew and I am sure they would work fine for that. So after it has cooled down how do you go about drying it so you can do the second turn on it? Take care, Gary

Hola sr Gary. Cómo está maestro. Cómo siempre digo, sus trabajos son muy buenos. Pero cuando un Gary mostrándose tal cual es . Solo conocemos sus manos . Muestre su rostro así lo conocemos. No sea timido. 😊😊. Cuídese . Quiero ver mucho más así aprendo de este bello arte que enseña. Gracias👍

Nice job, Gary! I may give that a try with some Sitka Spruce burl wood. Actually, alder turns a little orange when it's turned green, and nearly duplicates the color of your cherry. Hmmm. It's green and orange at the same time.... Take care, --Paul

Thank you Paul, I have a odd shaped but semi large Maple burl that I though about using for this or the 3 corner bowl I just did. The shape is so odd that I feel I would be wasting a lot of wood so will try and get at least 3 or 4 things from it. Thanks for watcing, Gary

Thank You Gary...I have become so use to you making wild & crazy, intricately complicated turnings on Friday mornings that have stopped taking my blood pressure after watching, ha! Today my pressure should be in the "normal" range with this beautiful (uncomplicated) Cherry. Always FUN & EDUCATIONAL..TM

Well that’s one way to get free turning wood, although it looks like expensive “free” wood (hopefully it didn’t damage the Solara too much $$$😩). Thanks for the video. Cheers, Tom

Thank you Tom! So it did put a dent in the roof but the other day he drooped by to help with our motorhome(A rodent chewed a wire and it flunked DEQ..only 20k miles on it) Well it seems the dent popped itself out for the most part. Probably all the heat we had expended the air inside the car? Thanks for watching, Gary

Great project Gary! That is an excellent example of bowl in a bowl. I have watched all of these you have produced (I think anyway), because this is a project I want very much to try. After your delightful tri-cornered bowl last week, I was ready to try that, because it looked so simple and easy. But now, I think I will go for the bowl in a bowl, because you make it look simple as well, and I think I can do it. Thank you again for a great lesson. Seeing a gift prepared for your family adds a special touch that makes it really nice. Thank you very much! See you next week!

Aww, Gary, what a great video and background story. Lovely results. I learned a good deal from your work. Most of all, I thought I needed a buffing ball for my drill. I never considered a shop towel to buff inside, as such. I'll give that a try on a current project whose interior I'm not quite satisfied with. Have a great weekend, sir. :)

Thank you Jay I appreciate your comments. I really do not want to get into the buffing wheel system and can get good results by getting the finish on as perfect as I can then using the Ack's products. I just finished a pair of bowls today that I did all the finish off the lathe and will buff them out the same way. As we have been saying for the last 10 years: Everyday is Saturday except for Sunday! Take care, Gary
