Needed to watch this again. This time I can see that the first pass , as a scraper, yielded dust similar to what comes off a card scraper when doing 'flat work'. Learnin new stuff all the time!

Hi Mike, Edinburgh calling, complete beginner. I have spent about 20 times more watching your (and others) videos than at the lathe (Draper mini) but have learned so much I think, it's just amazing. What I have found is you have to dive in with the new toy (or at least I did) , make a mess of your work (hopefully safely) and then go back to the instructors to see what happened. That's my experience this afternoon with my first attempt at a tiny oak bowl. Catch at the very end threw it off the glue chuck and that's that. There's just so much to take in. Anyway I just wanted to say an enormous thank you for the time and effort you put in to sharing your knowledge but also your focus on beginners as well. Cheers!

Thanks for another instructional video. I have only made a few bowls but in your last 2 videos I have learned so much about the importance of the bevel. I used what I learned on a cypress bowl blank. I am like you in that I work crazy hours so I was trying too hard to get my turnings done. This took away from the enjoyment of turning. I now understand what Cap'n Eddie meant by every cut being a practice cut.

Very nice Mike, thank you, The close up views of gouge grind profile and whilst cutting are excellent, just what we need. If I got it correct, while on outside of bowl, pull cutting does not involve riding the bevel, whereas push cutting does require riding the bevel. Cheers Bill
@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
Bill Wells Thanks Bill, actually you do ride the bevel on a pull cut, the video possibly doesn't show it that well, it's when shear scraping with the gouge, that you don't ride the bevel, but close the flute right up, and just use the wing, in a scraping cut. Hope this clarifies it. Cheers Mike

Beautiful turning Mike and a good refresher for those with some experience and a great lesson for beginners. As an aside I noted that someone kindly sent you some wood and among it was a length of mahonia. I spotted 4 similar pieces on ebay about a year ago and bought them as I have friends whose house is named mahonia. I turned 2 candlesticks for them as a surprise with Ahem! captive rings which I learned how to do from you. The wood is amazingly yellow and when I had the candlesticks finished I set them aside for a few days and on my return they had split along the full length and even cracked my beautiful rings. They were obviously far too fresh so I must get round to trying the other two. It's just to let you know really that mahonia must be the most yellow coloured wood there is. Best wishes, Alan.
@MikeWaldt10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alan, Keith did tell me that the Mahonia needs quite a while to dry, it is waxed, so before I turn it I'll make sure the moisture content is right down. Thanks for the "heads up" my friend. I couldn't believe how yellow it looks, quite stunning. Take care Mike

Hello, mike thanks for sharing as usual. I have been intimated by the bowl gouge after repeatedly not being able to use the one I have. I use a round carbide cutter tool that I made my self and it works really well except, tool marks. after watching your video I will try and tackle the bowl gouge again, I will watch Brendan's video before I attempt. I will be practicing tomorrow on a few bowls so wish me luck

Great video, informative, detailed and to the points, it does not matter how much I use the bowl gouge, I'm still a little scared of it at times, especially when I use it to hollow (don't have other hollowing tools, for now), but I did just ordered my first 5/8th bowl gouge, to supplement my 3/8th deep fluted bowl gouge which I used so far for just about everything.

Thanks Yuval, enjoy your new Bowl Gouge :). If your not sure of the cut your about to make, turn the work slowly by hand, and present the tool until you get a nice shaving, that will give you an indicator of how to proceed. Take care Mike

As always, well explained and informative. Your videos are getting better and better. I love the outtakes, glad it's not just me :D It's actually *really* hard to explain how to do something in this way. When you do anything regularly, you get the feel for it. Very few of us analyse how it actually happens. I am guessing you are learning loads in the making of the beginners series just by having to analyse what you do. Many thanks as always. I have a lathe now and my workshop is almost there. Just need a chuck and some turning chisels and I will have to start at the beginning of your videos again!

Thanks Ian, I really appreciate your continued support, and encouragement. I think it's true to say that I learn a little, every time I fire up the lathe. I am one of those annoying people that like to know the reason for things, so when I get a catch, I want to know why, not just the solution to stop it, if you see what I mean :) Looking forward to hearing from you when your shop is up and running my friend. Take care Mike

Mike, very instructional (bowl gouge technique) and entertaining (a blooper "reel"). For what more can we ask? Thank you for sharing ...

Thanks Mark, I think the bloopers may become a regular feature, as they are the easiest to make! ;) Take care Mike

Great video series you are working on Mike, very informative, I wondered about turning Cedar, must make the shop aromatic, I thought maybe cedar too soft to turn, I guess I was wrong, gotta try. Cheers Rob
@MikeWaldt10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob, Cedar turns well, but because it's an "oily" wood, the finish is more of a sheen not a shine. I tend to use something like Danish Oil as a finish on it, as this seems to allow the scent to come through. Take care Mike
