Examining the passage most often quoted by Catholic apologists to defend the doctrine of purgatory. 1 Corinthians 3 is quoted by Tim Staples and Jimmy Akin of Catholic Answers. It's even quote by pope Benedict in his 2007 encyclical "Spe Salvi". We are going to examine the passage thoughtfully to see what it really says.
Mike Winger is a pastor at Hosanna Christian Fellowship in Bellflower, CA.

As an ex -catholic, purgatory is like a waiting room to pay for unconfessed and unforgiven sins. Your loved ones will pay for masses and hopefully help you into Heaven. The thief on the cross was a sinner yet he asked the Lord to remember him in His kingdom. What was Jesus response? TODAY you will be with ME in Paradise! Jesus said” It is finished!” He alone carried our sins on the cross and He alone will forgive us. Seek this day whom you will serve, man or GOD, religion or a true spirit filled relationship with Jesus. God loves you! Seek HIM and you will find HIM. The Bible is our truth not man made religions. God is faithful and true✨🙏🏻💖

@ManAboutTown Jesus taught Purgatory several times. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is an example. The rich man is in a place of awful suffering but not the hell of the damned. Firstly, he addresses Abraham respectfully as Father. But more tellingly he asks Abraham for help for himself initially but then asks help to save his brothers. No damned soul would wish salvation for anyone. Hell is a place of hatred and despair, not love and hope. Damned souls hate God and His creation. Even if given a chance no damned soul would wish to go to Heaven such is there total hatred of God. So obviously the rich man is not in the Hell of the damned. We also see the rich man grow in holiness from selfish prayer to selfless prayer for others. So he is being purged of selfishness and growing in charity, an impossibility for a resident of Hell. Souls are cleansed of lingering attachments to sin in Purgatory. Please pray for deceased loved ones as they may need your prayers on their journey to Heaven. Blessings

@ManAboutTown I’m just an ordinary Catholic but l believe we should pray for deceased loved ones. Jesus teaches Purgatory. In Luke12 Jesus tells the parable of the 4 servants. When the master returns one servant is saved, one is lost and the other two suffer varying degrees of punishment. Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Mike is a fine preacher but on this matter he errs. I’ve been reading C. S. Lewis’s ‘The Great Divorce’ recently, and so far in my reading it has described a ‘grey town’ which is identified as Hell but which could also be described like purgatory, as there is a way out. Without getting too much into it, the way out of this town is through Jesus. Many people, not wishing to put in the effort of purification or being too ser in their ways, opt to return to Hell rather than reach Heaven. If something similar were to be the case, the only reason there is a purgatory-like process would be because of Jesus. Otherwise it would simply be Hell, with no way out.

Biblically speaking, the concept of Purgatory is completely useless. If the point of Purgatory is to "purge" sin from the believer, then it is redundant because the blood of Jesus has already done that before God. Further, once we die, we lose our sinful flesh. At the resurrection we will be given a new form. No Purgatory is necessary.

Just because we lose our sinful flesh does not mean we are now sinless and purified. Those damned to hell also lose their “sinful flesh” but that doesn’t mean they get to go to heaven, does it? Mathew 10:28 says our “soul and body” is destroyed in hell. So both those in heaven and hell lose their sinful flesh and take on some spiritual, eternal bodily form, but how come some people go to heaven and some to hell if everyone loses their “sinful flesh” that they have on earth? Purgatory is not a way to purify our physical bodies, its Gods grace and love working within us to purify our very souls so that we may be “perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” in heaven.

Mike, thank you for explaining this using actual verses. As a former Catholic, many people online tell me we must go to purgatory to be cleansed before we can experience God's presence. My instinctual answer is always, “No, you're negating the power of Jesus dying on the cross for us. Paying the ransom for us. Shedding His blood for us. He is enough, if we are saved and live our lives as He commands.” When I was a cafeteria Catholic, I just took purgatory on faith since my education in church ended around age 11. But it was easy to sin as a young adult, because I had purgatory as a fallback. That's a slippery slope. My soul was in serious danger. Had I died then, I was destined for hell. Because now I know purgatory doesn't exist. I've studied the Bible, been saved, both again, and my life is completely different because of Jesus Christ. Please keep reaching people. It's vital for salvation.

In Matthew 12:32, Jesus says: “And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the next.” Note, “it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the next.” This verse shows that some sins are possibly forgiven in the afterlife. Can't be in Heaven. Because Revelation 21:27 tells us, Nothing impure will ever enter it, So we know it can't be Heaven cause nothing impure can enter. It can't be Hell either. Because Matthew 25:46 tells us "And these will go away into eternal punishment, So we know it can't be Hell because that punishment is eternal. If the Catholic church is a cult then so was Jesus and the apostles because we can prove with certainty that the Apostles taught every single successor Catholic interpretations of scripture. You won't find a protestant interpretation for 1600 years. This precludes protestantism from being Apostolic and is thereforn non-christian insofar as it disagrees with the one true church. Scripture says every matter must be established by 2 or 3 witnesses: Deuteronomy 19:15 "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." 2 Corinthians 13:1 "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." All of the witnesses in the first 16 centuries testify to Catholic doctrines and not protestant ones. Here is one example from St. Ignatius who was the disciple of john the apostle and was ordained by Peter himself as successor in Antioch. Notice he teaches the eucharist and the supremacy of the church of Rome: Ignatius of Antioch "Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God. . . . They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes" (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2-7:1 [A.D. 110]). "...to the church also which holds the presidency, in the location of the country of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honor, worthy of blessing, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of sanctification, and, because you hold the presidency in love, named after Christ and named after the Father" (Letter to the Romans 1:1 [A.D. 110]) come home to the church Christ instituted and promised would exist in every century as His teaching authority!

I agree that he is still talking about ministers. We barely understand a single thing about the afterlife. Heaven, hell, Sheol, the abyss, etc. In the Old Testament things like Sheol and the pit. In the NT heaven, hell and concepts like "the third Heaven" which Paul briefly mentions only to say he didn't even know if he went there physically or just in a vision. If God gave Paul the vision or clear sight of Heaven and even Paul couldn't understand it. How the heck can we understand it.

Jesus spoke plenty about the next life, so I'm guessing that we really can understand at least a fair amount about it, certainly enough to know which place we want to go to when we die. I looked into the 2 Maccabees 12 passage and have a couple concerns. First, would this not be a pre-christian practice? I think we would need a clear repetition post-resurrection to establish this as a practice we should do today. Second, was the activity efficacious? We are given no indication that action accomplished anything. It says that they "might" be saved. Other than making their companions feel better about their fallen comrades, it does not tell us anything.

Read the story carefully. It has nothing to do with purgatory. The general was confused as to why all the platoon was killed because they were supposed to be on Gods side. They go to clear the bodies and find charms of other gods. He realizes they were committing idolatry and that’s why God didn’t protect them and they all died. So he sends a bunch of money to the church to try to get Gods wrath off of him and his men that are still alive. That’s it! And it’s doesn’t say even if it worked. In the Catholic Church idolatry is a mortal sin and you go straight to hell for that of you don’t confess it. You can’t give arms for people in hell and they can’t be saved. He wasn’t concerned about the people who died, after all they died committing a mortal sin. He was concerned about getting God’s wrath of him and his other soldiers.

After that I did have a three day conversation with a Catholic and in the end when she couldn’t find any more scriptures she said well the church said so. And I said Yep that’s my point. Abrahams bosom is absolutely a real place. It’s the top half of Sheol. There is nothing in the text that says it’s a parable. Most parables say they are parables and this one doesn’t. Also in the story of Lazarus and the rich man (where Abrahams bosom is mentioned) he has a name. In parables its said, “a person”, “a woman”, or “a man”, they are never named. So it’s a real and accurate story.

I'm just asking out of honest curiosity, so please don't feel attacked, but what are the differences (If any) between mortal and cardinal sins how does a Catholic obtain forgiveness for them?
@nickswicegood4316
@nickswicegood4316 2 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Schaefer Hi, As a Catholic we differentiate between mortal and venial, not mortal and cardinal. This comes from 1st John: "If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life-to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that." 1 John 5:16 ESV So sins that do not lead to death (venial) we just simply pray for forgiveness. Sins that lead to death (mortal) we are told in that text not to simply pray. At the beginning of 1John (1:9-10) we are told to confess our sins to recieve forgiveness from God. This is done by bringing those to confession and actually confessing them to a priest who has authority to proclaim they are forgiven according to John's gospel: 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” John 20:21‭-‬23 ESV Hope that helps! Peace.

Hello Mike, I’m a catholic, and after listening to your interpretation of 1st Corinthians 3 1-18, I’m amazed how different our interpretations can be. Ok, here is what I read from this very important chapter: first of all, the chapter is not presented towards ministries its presented toward the whole community, it’s for any Christian to consider. At that time the Corinthian community was leaving the original doctrine and the ppl responsible for the community felt impotent to face the internal divisions and the doubts with respect to faith. That’s why they call Paul who at that time was being retain in Efeso for his apostolic work, but he send this letter as a response, it was meant to be read in the mass celebrations of the ancient church to reinforce the faith of the community and to unite them. Paul starts reprimanding the Christians of the Corinthian community that are causing division because they side with a particular minister, without understanding that the ministers complement each other on giving the seed of Jesus Christ to the hearts of the people, but it is through God that this faith truly grows. Paul puts himself as example and he explains how his works are helping to build the church (the Christian community or Gods plan) but remind us that the foundation should always be Jesus Christ. He explains that each will be rewarded according to the works that we do. Then he presents how the quality of our works will be truly revealed and put to test in the day of Judgement, if our works are pure enough, we will be rewarded and go straight to heaven. Now if our works are not pure enough (for example if we have helped poor ppl with what we have left compared to others that give everything they have including their lives to help the poor by serving them), he said that we will still be saved (because the grace of salvation came of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ our lord) but we don’t go straight to heaven, we go through a purification process in which all of our works that are not pure enough will be burned and then we will go to heaven, this process is what the Catholic church calls Purgatory, if you don’t like the word you can call it: purification phase as the name is not important. This is why the catholic church teaches that we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, but that we should also care about the works we do in this life because faith and works should go together as both build our soul to be pure enough to go to straight to heaven.

1 Corinthians 3 is not dealing with purification or purgatory. We must all appear before the Judgement Seat of Christ. The question does not deal with Salvation or Heaven. That is dealt with when an individual trusts Christ as Savior. Every man’s work will be tested and rewards given. The question will be what and why you did what you did . As a former Roman Catholic I assumed I would spend a couple thousand years in Purgatory. I was not saved. I was trusting my baptism, the sacraments, my works of charity, my Hail Marys, my good deeds etc. These are the thing’s nearly every Catholic I ever met trusts in along with Jesus death, burial and resurrection. That’s not Bible salvation!

YOU = What you said about Luther is spot on! ME = When ex-Catholic monk, Martin Luther who had belonged to the strict Augustinian order which practiced severe penances, broke away and started the Protestant Reformation, he changed the focus from Jesus in the 4 Gospels to the " cherry-picked " passages in the other NT letters, mostly Paul's epistles, and moved from Practical Christianity to a Philosophical version which was devoid of the Cross and reduced it to a " Easy Christianity and Cheap Grace " version. Jesus defined a Christian = Must take up one's Cross daily, deny oneself and follow in His footsteps. On the other hand, Luther declared " Sola Scriptura " or the authority of the Bible alone thus ignoring Oral Tradition. For Christ died between 30 to 40 AD whereas the earliest Gospels of Mark and Matthew were written over 25 years after, during which time Oral Tradition was the guiding force. Moreover, John 21:25 declares that Jesus did a = world of works = which are unrecorded. Thus Paul stated that there were 2 traditions = oral and written = Thessalonians 2:15. Thus by only holding to the written tradition. the Bible, Protestants are only receiving part of the message For Jesus is the Word of God = John 1:1 = who was sent by The Father as the Way Truth and Life and to teach us how to reach Heaven. And words can be spoken as well as written. The Bible only contains the written word. Protestants believe that Jesus paid for all sin, as we could not pay the sin debt. Jesus paid it all once for all. And they sadly believe that God will forgive, not only sins against God, but also sins against Neighbour.= Check Matthew 6:14-15 and Matthew 18:32-35. I urge you to read a Red-Letter Bible precisely to clear any misunderstandings you have about being " saved." I present the examples of Ananias and Sapphira from the 1st Christian - Faith - community who were "executed " by God for just dishonesty and lying - Acts 5. And this occurred just a short time = after = Jesus' Heavenly ascent. And Jesus' threat to spew out and vomit the lukewarm Laodicean church - Rev 3. Obviously, these people were = not = saved. Moreover, the final judgement is based on works of Love = Matthew 25. This statement is by Jesus, God and Judge. Protestants have long been weaned on Paul's letters and wrongly equate " saved " with being granted "heavenly citizenship." This is despite the fact that Paul stated in Galatians 5:19-21 that Christians who do works of the flesh will = not = inherit the kingdom of God. In other words they will not receive heavenly citizenship. Protestants base their theology - their basic belief systems and doctrines, instead of the Gospels, on Paul's letters especially =For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; 9it is not from works, so no one may boast = Ephesians 2:8-9 = and have arrived at religious philosophy that is distant from practical Christianity. Protestants believe that Jesus came to earth to die and take away all sins and its guilt association. His cry - It is finished - proved that human redemption from sin was completed, and that those who believe in Jesus would have their names forever written in the Lamb's Book of Life and at the time of death, they would be - absent in the flesh, present with the Lord forever - no matter how many or how grievous they committed sins. Others would be caught up and - raptured - to be with Jesus forever. Thus the promise of salvation was God's free gift - grace - to them. From the Oral Tradition, Catholics believe that when Adam and Eve sinned, God not only cast them from Eden, and laid - Original Sin - on all their descendants, but also slammed the gates of Heaven shut. God then required that a man must pay the penalty of the man Adam's sin in order to atone for the Original Sins of mankind and thereby open Heaven's gates. However, no man was found to be worthy - sinless - so in the fullness of time, God sent His Son, Jesus, to live sinlessly and die to pay that penalty.. It is finished - was Jesus' cry of Mission accomplished and that Heaven was now open. And that all = original = sins of those past, those present and those still unborn would be forever wiped away. And that Baptism is a one-time - Grace - event that washes all prior sins - 1 Peter 3:21 - However, we are responsible for all sins after, as evidenced by God's " execution " of the couple Ananias and Sapphira from the 1st Christian Faith community for the relatively " minor " sins of dishonesty and lying. And this occurred just a short time = after = Jesus' heavenly ascent. Saved by grace is thus Jesus' freewill offering of Himself to pay the penalty of Adam's sin and thereby open the gates of Heaven. Jesus commanded, not suggested, the love of God and neighbour. The Cross is the symbol of Love. The vertical beam represents our Love of God and the horizontal beam, our Love of Neighbour. Thus the cross has become the key to open Heaven which is a place of unconditional love where all other virtues of peace, joy, happiness can be enjoyed.

It says he made a proclamation not preached. (guess it depends which version you read- you have to ask a scholar which is more accurate) Proclamation is an announcement of great importance. So after he was crucified, he made an announcement to the people in the tournament half of Sheol. It doesn’t say they accepted what he said or were changed or were saved. Sheol is two parts, just like Jesus described in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The top half is Paradise or Abrahams bosom, where he told the thief on the cross he would see him that day, and the bottom half is a place of torment where the rich man went. When he died, he went to Sheol (not heaven-that’s why he told Mary not to touch him for he had not been to the father yet). Jesus was with the thief in paradise like he said, and he proclaimed something to the people in torment. Hope that helps.

Nathanael Wisecup Nathanael Wisecup here's where the Bible tells us our souls depart after death. Genesis 35:“18. And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.” Here's our apostle telling us that when we're absent from the body we're present with the Lord. I know you know that the Lord Jesus Christ is in heaven right? So if we're present with the Lord and he's in heaven the only place we could be is in heaven. Plus there's only three places, heaven, earth, or hell! 2 Corinthian's 5:“6. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7. (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” Everyone who is saved and dies, their souls go to heaven until the rapture and your body stays in the ground. At the rapture all souls return with Christ in the clouds to meet their resurrected bodies and that's why the dead raises first and then we who are alive are changed in a moment in a twinkling of an eye, that's the church receiving our glorified bodies. 1 Corinthian's 15:51-53. Everyone who dies and aren't saved go straight into hell and they stays in hell until the end of the millennium kingdom and are released to be judged by Christ and then thrown into the lake of fire for eternity! Luke 16:“22. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” Revelation 20:“13. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” 2 Corinthian's 5:8 isn't referring to Paul being taken to the third heaven. Paul was taken to be shown some mysteries. 7 mysteries to be exact but 2 Corinthian's 5:8 is referring to the church not Paul himself. That's why it says "WE" and not "I" or "ME" we are the church who Paul is preaching too! Before in Old Testament when you died and didn't go,to hell you went to a place called Abraham's bosom as you see in the scriptures above. After Christ was crucified he went to preach in hell and to lead the people in Abraham's bosom which is also called paradise and lead them into heaven. Not only that but their bodies were also resurrected at the same time, then Christ returned to earth and stayed 40 days with the apostle before ascending back into heaven. So it's a Biblical fact that we go to heaven after death and anyone who tells you something else they surly don't know the scriptures which most people actually don't but pretend to know only. Let me know if this helps you!

Nicholas James so is there like a judgment immediately after we die and then another judgment when Christ returns? Also, why do the dead in Christ have to rise first if they are already in heaven, when the rapture takes place?
@nicholasjames5181
@nicholasjames5181 6 жыл бұрын
Nathanael Wisecup there's no judgment when you die right away. The church is judged after the rapture its one of the reasons we go to heaven. The Bible says it's appointed for men to die once but not every man is appointed to die once. This is referring to Jesus Christ himself because some men will never die, some die once and some die twice even. But it could also be referring to us in a way as well because lots of scriptures can have a double application but if you read it it's in the context of Jesus Christ. Jesus was appointed once to die and then he's going to judge everyone when he sees us at the rapture and he will judge the rest when he sees them after the millennium kingdom. If that's the case then there's lots of judgments days but there's only two, the judgment seat of Christ and the great white throne judgment. Plus not everyone will die either because lots of people will be alive when the rapture happens and those people will never die, plus those small few who actually make it through the tribulation will not die either if they live right and obey Jesus during the millennium kingdom. People will go back to dealing living up to a thousand years old again like it was during the time of Adam and Eve. There's no judgment when Christ returns but he's going to throw everyone against him into hell for a thousand years with Satan and the false prophet though. The church has already been judged and we return with Christ with our crowns and white garments. Those people who are thrown into hell are released after the thousands years are up because Satan is released to deceive the nation once again after the thousands years and will convince people who don't like living under the rules of Jesus and that's the last battle on earth called Gog and Magog! Read revelation 20 for more details and you will see it. The great white throne judgment happens after Satan convinces lots of the nation to turn against Christ after the millennium kingdom. Jesus is going to destroy Satan and those people one last time at Gog and Magog and then the wicked will be judged. After this is when Jesus destroys the heavens and earth and makes everything new again. The dead in Christ raises first because the resurrection happens first I guess and those dead people in Christ meets their souls in clouds and then those who are alive are changed in a moment I guess before we're raptured up to meet everyone else. But to be honest I don't know why God chose to do it in that order. Maybe they need a head start LOL! The Bible doesn't tell us why it's in that order just that it's going to happen in that order.

When the Catholic apologist say you can't separate the person from the works in order to try to redeem his viewpoint on purgatory....this is further proven by the word to be false. The scripture says even if the persons work is burned up they are still saved.....well according to the Catholic guy if the persons work is burned up so are they.....which is DIRECTLY and plainly refuted in same passage he is using. How can he not see that. Personally now I understand what Jesus meant when he said 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. I think Mike touches on a great point answering the very first question. The concept of sleeping in death appears about one hundred eleven times in Scripture, and every instance refers to a restful state of physical restoration or a peaceful state associated with death.
 Where do we get the idea for the traditional tombstones that reads, ‘rest in peace’? When we die, the body returns to the ground and sleeps while the spirit returns to God. There is a separation between the mortal body and soul at death, or when we sleep.
 Ecclesiastes 12:7 7 then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

We are only called to awaken at the day of judgement. Therefore, when we die, the body is sleeping and not tormenting in a place that purges sins. We are sleeping peacefully. What will thousands of years feel like when we are called to awaken from the sleep of death? 1 Kings 2:10 Then David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David. Daniel 12:2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.
1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 2 Peter 3:3-9
3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. Sleep seems to defy time and space even when dreaming, but also in the absence of dreams. In modern times, the time lapse associated with sleep can be compared to a medical operation under anesthesia; a person awakens with, “How long was I under? It felt like just a second ago.”
 Hebrews 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,
 Matthew 10:28 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Romans 8:10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

I grew up in a denomination that teaches soul sleep and denies that people go straight to heaven or hell at death. That doesn't bother me too much, but they generally believe that soul sleep is referring to a literal sleep. To support this, they often pointed to John 11: 11-14, where Jesus declares that Lazarus had fallen asleep, but He was going to awaken Him. What those who hold to literal soul sleep often ignore when citing this verse is that Jesus had to correct His disciples when they assumed He was speaking of literal sleep. That very clearly implies that Jesus was speaking metaphorically.

Even accepting the 2 Maccabees passage as true, the sin offering for the dead does not imply Purgatory. It only implies that God, knowing whether such an offering took place, accounts for that in the Judgment at the end of days, which is actually when the Bible declares that the wicked will be sent to the fires. “And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.” - Revelation 20:13

Consider this a vote for the ESV, pretty much all the translations (save the NWT and such) are great but the ESV is in my opinion hands down the best for general use. It is the best blend of word for word and thought for thought available right now. Too much word for word is hard to understand, too much thought for thought loses some meaning. The ESV is really the best blending. The NASB is what I would consider the ideal for really deep study but gets a little dense and the ISV, NIV, or NLT (not really decided on this) would be ideal for those who need an easier to read translation.
