A few years back I was listening to a classical music station when they were playing, Carmen. When finished, the normally aloof DJ, stated, "Who hears this and thinks about the Gilligan's island's episode? I do! I do!'. I had to smile because that was exactly what I was thinking of as well!

Tina Louise was probably the only accomplished singer in the cast, that aside, this is one of the best episodes in the series. I always thought Ginger forgetting her lines and having to be prompted by the Professor seemed real and Sherwood Schwartz confirmed on the DVD commentary that Tina Louise did indeed "go up in her lines" and they decided to keep it in.

Gilbert Martinez Phil Silvers was a comedic genius! Every watch him in “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World!”? Especially when they find the money near the end of the picture and he counts everyone who will get a share. He starts off counting himself first and he then counts himself again as the last one! lol also in the beginning of the film opening theme when the movie’s major stars kept switching their names to get top billing and before the cartoon characters finish, he puts his name at the top billing lol. Brilliant!

I remember this scene fondly as it gave me a head start on Hamlet years before we studied it in my English class in high school as a senior. Whenever I hear the music from Carmen, am reminded of these lyrics. Actually it's uncertain as to whether Ophelia's drowning was a suicide or an accident (she's in a mad state and crawls out onto a limb which broke and knocked her into the river - and with all the heavy clothes people wore back then, they got soaked and made her sink like a rock - that's the description Queen Gertrude gave which she probably heard from someone who tried in vain to save her). There's a later scene where gravediggers said she wouldn't be getting Christian burial except that she was a noblewoman - Catholics back then refused to give people who committed or might have committed suicide a Christian burial - they might still be doing that kind of refusal - you'd think they would give someone the benefit of the doubt if only for the family's sake. Her brother Laertes is later arguing with the priest that she's not getting a full Christian burial but the priest says she's lucky to get what she's getting since "her death was doubtful". Earlier in the play when Hamlet tells Ophelia to get thyself to a "notary", they were using it to replace the word nunnery that was in Shakespeare - that word wouldn't have passed sensors since Shakespeare wasn't referring to a convent but in his day the word nunnery meant house of prostitution. In Shakespeare's play, everyone is dead at the end with the exception of Hamlet's friend Horatio who indicated he also wanted to die - but Hamlet's dying wish was for Horatio to live and tell their story to others.

Loved growing up with this show. These actors were all VERY talented. Being older, it's easier to recognize. Great chemistry. The very small expressions by Alan Hale were always priceless. Even if she was difficult, Tina Louise was very underrated and underappreciated for what she brought to the scenes.

A KZbin upload of Russell Johnson reminiscing about the cast of the series does not include anything negative about Tina. Between 1964 and 1967, nobody knew that syndicated reruns in the 1970s were going to become so popular that reunions would make profits. Therefore, nobody knew in the 1960s that Tina was going to turn down job offers for the reunions.

Useless Trivia, just for fun. The skipper was played by Alan Hale, Jr. His father, Alan Hale, did a number in a Warner Brothers wartime fund raiser in 1943 called "Thank Your Lucky Stars." You'll recognize him when you see him because father and son could have been twins born 30 years apart. That movie was also the only time Bette Davis or Errol Flynn sang on screen. And Humphrey Bogart's cameo was priceless.

This was my very first introduction to Shakespeare! To this day I think Hamlet looks exactly looks like Gilligan. And I still remember the words to every song! Ha ha! I remember this episode well. As I recall the castaways were trying to convince Theater producer Harold Hecuba to help them get off the island by impressing him with a play. Instead Hecuba left the island in secret and produced Hamlet the Musical which was a hit! Those poor castaways never got a break!

What is the connection between "Gilligan's Island" and 40 years? Give up? In the episode in which the Skipper develops an allergy (to Gilligan), he asks the Professor to level with him as to the nature of his sickness; specifically, how much time he has left. The Professor says, "Around 40 years." The Skipper panics and then, when what the Professor said sinks in, he asks quizzically, "Forty years?!"; and then the Professor explains that the Skipper is beset by a simple allergy. . At any rate, 40 years is way too long not to see "Gilligan's," sir -- please buy the 3-season set on DVD -- it's worth it, and you'll love it . . . all over again! :)

Alan Hale, unlike some of the cast who dreaded being typecast, actually thrived on it. He even capitalized on his Skipper image by opening a restaurant where he'd greet guests in his Skipper outfit. He also used to make public appearances dressed as the Skipper, especially to children's hospitals. Once he gave extra comfort to a child fan who had pending surgery - this was at the time he was privately dying of cancer. He was truly one in a billion.

EVERY SINGLE TIME in Formula 1 during the podium celebration after they pop champagne, that last song would play after the first minute so I have to stick around so I can sing the Gilligan’s Island lyrics over it: “Do not forget, stay out of debt!” It was the 90’s when my mom first introduced me to the VHS tapes of the show and it became one of those inside joke, household tunes. Totally agree, because there was actual WISDOM in every episode. In the first episode they were all enemies, but by the time the series ended, their common struggles had made them all friends. A good idea for the castaways to do that play to convince Harold Hecuba to let Ginger have a part in his movie instead of her choosing to stay on the island alone because Hecuba laughed at her, they should've stayed awake all night in case Hecuba was going to leave them behind. Ginger must've cried very hard after she and her friends have been double-crossed and Hecuba didn't care that the castaways' families were worried sick when they heard there was no sign of the Minnow. Hecuba could've been a big hero instead of being a thief.
