I just built two of these for my forge. I did use at first a .035 MIG tip, without a regulator and it made crazy heat. went thru propane like a fish through water but, red hot everything in just a couple minutes. chimney effect I did get after it had been running for a while. since, I have reduced to a .025 MIG tip and I now have a regulator. 20 pound max but hey it's better than not one at all. works so much better and does not go through the propane like it did. I like the idea of using a MIG tip due to the fact I can interchange them from big to small if the need arises. I would like to find a regulator that would go up a little higher than 20 pounds. maybe 30 or so. nice job. great video.

OMG! Someone with a DIY torch vid that actually mentions using yellow tape instead of white Teflon! I'd give 5 thumbs up for that alone if I could! White Teflon is not for NG or LPG! Call me anal retentive, but better safe than sorry.

One quick tip about making the propane nozzle hole. It's easier to drill it from the other side (the inside of the hex cap) because there already is a conical indentation right in the middle of it. I used a 1mm drill bit, easy to find on ebay and other sites.

I'm getting ready to build my first forge, so I've been researching several designs. And I like this design the best. I've got some welding and cutting skills and I'm going to use a propane bottle for my forge body. Would there be an advantage to using two burners on something that size or would one be enough?
@TurnerForge

Anthony Omes eh, some might argue but I'm able to forge weld in mine with one burner at 15 psi. So in my opinion one is plenty.

so what would be the best way to avoid the chimney effect? as is my understanding air is sucked in through the top to feed the flame and with the venturi effect plus cooling of the gas being fed through the line, how will hot air make it all the way up the back enough to damage the parts? is there an ideal design for a forge to circumvent this problem?

Good job on the video. ONE question on this build... How far down into the bell reducer do you stick the 1/8 cap or nozzle? I assume it's not all the way to the 3/4 nipple - but getting close??

I had asked on your older burner vid,but since this is newer design I'll ask here.Since I have a lathe,would it be beneficial to machine a nice taper on the inside of the bell reducers?I would think it would disrupt the flow less than the threaded or cast interior.On the burner you actually use,can you share the dimensions on the forge-side end bell?I'm not scared to fabricate,lol,and others may want to know also.I like the newer saddle for the 1/8" on the one you say you use,that goes all the way across to the other side.I think I'll do that.How do you determine how far inside to put the 1/8" into the reducer before you tighten the setscrew,and does it make any difference?Lastly,in the other video I stated I had .030&.035 tips so I'll use one of them,but I see you have no baffle on this new design.Should I go a little bigger on the jet and then be able to adjust the air draw?P.S.,how do you think a needle valve in-line after the ball valve would work?Thanks again for sharing!
@TurnerForge
@TurnerForge 7 жыл бұрын
Bowtie41 Yes to all of That! I would love to hear how much It helped the design. As for the MIG tips my aim was to keep the hole as similar as possible. I apologize for the delayed response.
@jrocks1971
@jrocks1971 5 жыл бұрын
Machining your bell reducer on a lathe out of stainless is the ultimate. You want no more than a 1:12 taper -- i.e., the flare at the hot end of your burner should expand at an angle equivalent to a 1" pipe increasing to 2" over one foot (12".) A 2-3" flare at that taper ratio, made of stainless, that threads (or weld it) onto your 8" x 3/4" black pipe nipple burner body is ideal. As for MIG tips vs the fixed 3/64" hole for the gas aperture, I've done this both ways. The 3/64 bit/hole in the cap works fine, but I like drilling and tapping the 1/8" nipple cap to accept MIG tips (usually 1/4" x 20, but depends on your MIG tips - just wind them into the test threads at lowes fastener aisle to confirm the size tap you need.) MIG tips let you change them out as needed, which lets you run different apertures for single vs. double burners, etc. Running two burners off the same line changes the pressures coming out of the apertures. (One hole, more pressure -- two holes = less pressure.) You can get most of the adjustment you need by moving the venturi / MIG tip / 1/8" nipple & cap -- whatever you want to call it -- in and out of the bell reducer, and/ore by increasing the pressure via your gas line regulator knob, but the actual aperture also matters, so it's handy to be able to change out MIG tips when dialing it in. You need smaller apertures (MIG tips) at elevation and may have to try several, depending on your number of burners, before you'll find the best flame at the lowest PSI, so your fuel economy is the cheape$t possbile. Definitely get a 30 PSI propane regulator ($30 on Amazon, with hose) and I found it's wise to put in a 90 degree elbow and another 4"-8" nipple running away from the forge before the ball valve so you're not melting the nylon bushing the ball turns in, inside the ball valve shut-off (unless you can find the all-metal shut off valves.) The offset from the forge body also helps save that yellow gas-rated teflon tape from melting. Set your burners into your forge at and angle and pack your gaps around the burners where they feed into the forge body with a little left-over ceramic fiber insulator blanket to stop crazy heat from coming back up the burners ("the chimney effect.")

I really like the design of this burner but I’m unable to get my forge above 1500°f when I run the burner at 7-10 psi. So the material I’m work on only gets orange and gives me very little time to forge it. My forge is the small one which I saw on essential craftsman 4.5x4x9. I use 1-1/4 flare on the burner end and I’ve tried 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 on the entry orifice. I’ve also tried different lengths of pipe 6 and 8 inch. And different welding tips .030 and .035. I also made the necessary flame adjustments by moving the tip in and out. I don’t see very much difference in any of the setup combinations I try, however, when I add a bit of air into the orifice from a hair dryer I can increase the temperature by at least 200°f. Many of the other similar burner design suggest a method of choking off the air intake but I’m finding its better to add more air. Do you have any idea what I can try to increase the temperature of the forge? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks
@TurnerForge
@TurnerForge 5 жыл бұрын
Hey ben. Wow it seems like you have tried almost everything! First thing, are you getting allot of dragons breath? This may be too much torch for that little forge. I wonder if you made a version of this torch scaled down if you may get better results? Also I would look at the delivery oriface, is it aligned so that the jet is not bouncing around in the torch body? Sometimes that can kill your heat. It's hard to diagnose without seeing it in action. I also have found that 6 to 7 inches is the sweet spot for the torch body.
@benlallier1721
@benlallier1721 5 жыл бұрын
Turner Forge Thanks for the timely reply. Yes the mig tip is aligned for sure . But you’ve given me a couple of things to consider. I don’t think there is too much dragon’s breath. When you say scale it down a bit I presume you are saying to try a smaller mig tip. Perhaps a .023. Will do but I am finding that the .035 gives somewhat more heat than the .030. And as for the size of the forge it will be fairly easy for me to double the size with a few bricks and see what happens. Unfortunately I live in the boondocks and don’t have easy access to everything but I will certainly give your suggestions a try ASAP. Thanks again.

Turner Forge as it turns out I discovered today that you should not use hard fire bricks for a forge. Apparently they soak up the heat. Unfortunately that’s all they carried at the local brickyard. I was able to buy a soft fire brick from a local potter to drill the hole for the burner. I will try and get some more from him to replace the hard ones. Really anxious to get the forge working properly so that I can get forging!

The tiger torch is a very common propane torch that can be used for several applications,I think lots are used for say, thawing frozen pipes in winter.I live in Canada so lots of cold apps here. They are just off the shelf at most hardware stores. I think the easiest way to explain it would be to Google Tiger Torch and there is lots of info there.It has a fair amount of heat but maybe it would need injected air to save propane costs and heat faster.

great video! I was curious if you have even used a 2" reducer? I found a 2" to 3/4" reducer and wanted your expertise about how i might use it most efficiently

I have, and they work great! I would recomend them however they are a bit more difficult to find than the ones they carry in the big box stores.

do you have an idea of mig tip size that i should use with the 2" reducer? I have tried .030 and .025...
@TurnerForge
@TurnerForge 5 жыл бұрын
@@rwzwiefka The .30 worked ok for me. If you are having troubles I would first check the alignment, if that's all good then you might need to bump it up a size.

what do you recommend for the reducer size holding the torch flame if shooting propane into 2" reducer? is there a rule of thumb for this? I appreciate you helping me along TF
@TurnerForge
@TurnerForge 5 жыл бұрын
@@rwzwiefka no real rule that I know of, I usually just go the next size up. So 3/4 to 1". It never hurts the go bigger though

I built one patterned after the one made by the king of random and it gets everything red hot but the copper only become soft, it does not melt, and that's after having the burner run for almost 2 hours emptying my propane tank. I used the .023 MIG tip but was wondering if a larger hole would work better. I have .030 - .035 and .045. tips on my MIG supplies.

archangel20031 I would use a ".30" mig I've had the best luck with those

Peter Silva it sounds like there might be some turbulence inside the chamber. Be sure the jet is going straight down the tube, you have enough pressure, and there is nothing clogging the delivery orafice.

Gotta say something, just because I'm a machinist and it bothers me. 1/64" = .0156", so 3/64" = .0468" 1/32" = .0312" So your propane jet is .0468", not the .030" you stated. If you don't understand what a fraction means in decimal form, pull out your phone and open the calculator app. Punch in the top number and divide it by the bottom number. Other than that, good video.

Thanks! The .030 was the size mig tip I purchased. That is what it said on the packaging. But thank you for giving me a heads up. Glad you like the vid.

@@TurnerForge Did I misunderstand you in your use of a 3/64" drill in that Dremel? Seemed like you were saying it was going to be the orifice/jet for propane rather than a mig tip.

You know what you are right, I used a mig tip in another vid, ya it's been a while since I made this one. The bit size was just what was on the bit box. Thank you for lending some insight!

@@TurnerForge Yeah, no worries man. Lots of people have trouble with the decimal to fraction conversion and I wanted to point it out so folks would be aware. It might not work well at .046" for someone else.
