Hilariously spot on! It just shows how Filipino language in general is very rich in expressions and metaphors that when directly translated to English, it adds its own flavor and uniqueness to it that makes it distinctively Filipino. After watching the video, I realized that us Filipinos use English, but people may misunderstand it. Expressions like 'close open' and 'for a while' are some examples where other foreign people get confused when we use these words. We, Filipinos, have our own ways on conveying our thoughts when speaking in English just like what Mr. Mikey Bustos mentioned in this video, when Pinoy's say expressions like "I'll go ahead" which means, "Excuse me, I have to go", or in Filipino translation, "Mauna na ako", but a typical North American will be confused or cannot really understand what it means. Understanding Word Choice in Multicultural Contexts Pinoy expressions and accents have become famous this past year, especially since some influencers are of Filipino descent. The Pinoy English expressions in the video, "I'll go ahead," "For a while," and "I'll pass by," are some of the most commonly used Pinoy English expressions that Filipinos are familiar with. We often use these expressions when communicating in English or with someone who speaks English. When I was in high school, our school had a mandatory policy to always speak in English once inside the school campus unless it was August for Buwan ng Wika. I would always use the Pinoy English expression, "I’ll go ahead," when I would tell my classmates that I would go home ahead of them. When some of the teachers in the school needed to return to the faculty to get something they had forgotten, they would always say, "For a while." We, Filipinos, have our own way of communicating, especially when we use English words. We tend to shorten English words. Instead of "Wait for a while," we use "for a while." We also have different meanings for the English words that we use. For example, "for a while" means "for a short time" in English, but it means "wait" in Pinoy. The Pinoy English expressions are, as said by Mikey Bustos in the video, a direct translation of our language counterparts, and the three Pinoy English expressions presented in the video are the clearest examples. I'm currently working in a BPO and remembered using these phrases and expressions before, to the point that I need to explain myself further. but the good thing is, they Americans and most of our callers are understandable, as long as we fixed and address their issues. From that experience I keep watching English movies, study their different idioms and memorizing basic vocabs, from there I can easily express myself and deliver my thoughts. The video highlights how us, Filipino’s are very distinct in many ways. Pinoy English is very unique as it adds flavors and new meanings to some phrases or words. This video reminds me of the “Filipino moments” or very Filipino thing that went viral on social media. The “close open close open” was so nostalgic because my parents used to say that especially when we have a baby or toddler on our house. After I have watched this video, I have learned and realized many things about how we make our own identity in the English language like how it has affected ours. To be honest, it is my first time to learn that Westerners can’t understand our English expressions which contribute to our uniqueness. One of the examples that came to my mind while watching this video is the word “Comfort Room”. When I socialize with foreigners, they are always confused that we called the bathroom like that. I totally agree and believe that we each have our own way of conveying our thoughts, especially when speaking English. As Filipinos, we also have different pronunciation, grammar, accent and vocabulary which is somehow because of our native languages and the culture of other Filipino speakers, in which we adapt and evolve at the same time. That is why our English is way different from the North American standard, because it is based on our own contexts. After I've finished watching the video. I recognized that we do have direct words or term for every Filipino phrase that we all use in regular conversation and communication. With that, it can cause that some individuals particularly from western nations to come and think that they also have a unique interpretation. In fact, the Filipino language have so many varieties of terms and expression that when translated directly into English it ended up taking its own originality. In that case it is the Filipino goes distinctive. Moreover, we tend to translate it as we want without even knowing that it is hard for someone in different culture to understand and realize if that phrase does extent in our world.

Yes. The truth is, Filipinos are the 2nd best in English speaking countries in Asia but when I finished watching Mikey Bustos video, I realized that even though the English language is the universal language, not everyone can understand each other even if the same language is used. Even if the same word is used, it still has a different meaning for others. Just like the phrase "Live-in" Due to the Philippines’ conservative nature towards marriage, live-in or the state of an unmarried couple living together is frowned upon. Despite the common practice of moving together in other countries, the idea of living together is considered as taboo and against the public morals. Using English language is good for us to communicate but, do not forget to take each word slowly because just like in the video there are some words that has a different meaning and it may offend or confuse others. Always be mindful and let us always be proud for being a Filipino!.

I realized that we Filipinos easily adapts with different languages and have our own unique way of conveying our thoughts in speaking English, it is mainly from the translation of Filipino language in which we used in our everyday lives. Since we are going to converse with foreign especially in Western Countries, we have to be extra careful with our way of expressing ourselves (in our grammar, accents and pronunciations) in English so we can’t be misunderstood. It really shows how rich and arbitrary the Philippine English. Given the fact that English Language is not our Second Language or L2 as time goes by we keep learning how to use it to convey and to transmit a messages whether in formal or in our daily life set-up. For example in the video, the expression close-open are commonly used by us Filipinos. We tend to say close when we want to shut something (unless it is a door) because our definition with that is to shut because it is close. Instead of saying turn off the light or turn the lights off just like in the video we say close the light because for us the image of the word close is dark or black out same as with open, when we say open, it’s bright and free.

There is no limit as to how we can transform a language to suit our own purposes and understanding. We Filipinos are so creative that we even created many Pinoy English expressions that came from the literal and direct translations of our original Filipino expressions.
