i think the best thing to have when learning an instrument is passion because without passion its hard to find the motivation to actually practice. passion drives you to practice, it makes you want to pick up the guitar and play, it gives you inspiration. its clear that you have a crazy amount of passion and i admire you for that bro

I've been playing 18 years. Time flies. I really made the most progress as a guitarist in those first 3-5 years. I'm no EVH but I'm comfortable with my skill level for a guy with severe arthritis. For anyone out there getting frustrated in the first year or so, keep at it. It'll pay off. But how Mikey is finding other live musicians to gig with is honestly beyond me, even at my age. I'm convinced drummers and bassists just don't exist in real life.

this kinda lit an ignition inside me again as to what it was like to play guitar for the first time. these days I haven't been picking up the guitar because I'm so caught up with everything else in my life, but I realized that I'm still the same kid who had decided to play the guitar and wanted to play for hours on end every single day that I could. and for that I want to pick up my guitar once more and try to finish the hard songs that I once wanted to complete in order to fulfill not just my self esteem, but for the kid that wanted to rock out the entire world. thank you mikey 💛

I think one of the interesting things I've learned over the years is that being good at anything means lots of sucking, repetition and more sucking. It's easy to see someone who's been at it for a few years and say "wow, they're amazing, I wish I could play like that!" What I've learned is you gotta be willing to put in a lot of time and putting small achievable goals to hit. I love playing guitar, it's a journey for sure, but no better feeling then trying to learn a riff or song, you're terrible at first and then you keep at it and then it clicks!

Mikey, i want to thank you for bringing me another perspective to guitar. I'm most of the times stuck on playing the same licks and riffs, but your playing has changed me over the last few months. I had the same thing. It was weird, since the first three years i did not really do anything. Like the hardest songs i could play were jellybelly by the smashing pumpkins and my own summer by deftones. After 3 years, something suddenly clicked whereas before i liked the concept of guitar but dis not like putting in the work, now i needed to play guitar and began to experience withdrawl symptoms if i didn’t play guitar for long enough. I could play for an entire day with no breaks for a weekend without even stopping to eat. And i would love every second of it. Now of course sometimes i don’t want to play as much, but there are also times like those. And man, I made like so much progress. After three years: Could play single note riffs and power chords Did not know one chord or one scale Played like only easy metal like deftones Basically no progress, just screwing around Knew nothing about music theory After 3 months with my newfound obsession: Venturing into jazz chords and weird chords, tritones, all that jazz Still was a metalhead Knows a lot about music theory Can sing and play at the same time Can play jack johnsons “Constellations” Can play classical guitar songs like “Capricjo arabe” Basically could just play anything pretty well, an all rounder I found all guitar fascinating and wanted to explore all of it, and so I did not focus on speciallizing. Just remember, if you want it enough, work and all, you can do it, and I am a prime example ( i do find it important to note that I was a music lover since out of the womb, my literal first word was guitar no joke. I had played like a bit of piano and drums beforehand but no instrument stuck with me. I can now play various percussion instruments including drums, bass, piano, and most of all guitar)

I’m gonna play and practice the incredibly difficult and “impossible”, transcriptions and songs like how my heroes Tommy Emmanuel, and Sungha Jung played.
