A MIRACLE, not just technically, his endless unique tonal palette, but emotionally: no pianist in history has ever played with such SENSITIVITY. Pletnev is second to no one. Unsurpassed perfection in every aspect.

I also believe that it is a shame there are only a few live recordings of Pletnev available such as the Carnegie hall album. People who call Pletnev dry and cold have never experienced him live. In concert there is a new dimension, just incredible. In almost all cases he is so much more inspired than when he plays in studio which he dislikes. Performances like this one here as well as his live perf. on YT of the Preludes, Rach 3 , Pictures at an Exhibition etc. should be all available on DVD.

While every note and sound are measured with precision, his performance is so emotional and thoughtful, you can't help it but play this video time and over again. Pletnev is brilliant! I heard him play Chopin 35 years ago and still remember the delicate sound and suspense of his music like it happened yesterday.

On this 2nd mvmnt Pletnev is pure magic. He makes the piano speak like a human voice.Every note is deeply felt as if he is completely identified with Chopins exact emotions .The gradual nuances, shadings, smooth impeccable legato of the right hand, combined with a perfect sense of timing make this rendition impossible to beat.I love Zimmerman too, but here Pletnev is truly into his naturally born 6th sense.A state of subconscious comunion with the composer himself.

Прекрасно до слёз! Надеюсь, Плетнёв сыграет этот концерт ещё не один раз и порадует нас ещё более глубоким проникновением в музыку Шопена!

I know Sokolov's version, he certainly plays beautifully but still sounds like a very good pianist playing awesome piano, when I listen to Pletnev playing this concerto I forget about all this because I am taken away by the sheer presence of music. Pletnev establishes new dimensions, that's the difference. And yes, his sound is more like a cold brilliance but from every note breathes an incredible, ice-cold tenderness. It sounds just "right".
You might be right but Pletnev enriches my live with his pianism and that is what counts for me . He is a fantastic pianist and definitely on the level of Horowitz. Pletnev is excentric and therefore there will always be people calling his playing contrived. We won't be able to change that. People with a real sense for music will get notice of this genius, even in hundred years.

quite enchanting.The very gifted conductor has good manners too, acknowledging the Concertmaster....Pletnev playing this even more beautifully than the 1 st concerto.Interesting, the comments from others who seem oblivious to Novaes, Argerich, Josef Hofmann, the Lhevinnes, CORTOTand Lipatti, supreme Chopin interpreters, Paderewski......

Yes, I noticed that. I did not know Rubinstein accents those thirds, too. Pletnev has never been a fan of Rubinstein's Chopin and I dare to say that Pletnev's renditions of both Chopin concertos may be the best ever given. I feel his conception and his playing are completely in the spirit of Chopin. Listeners who believe in a tempestuous and proud young Chopin might not be satisfied with Pletnev's approach. To me his concertos are a revelation.

Pletnev himself claims that in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory he never had achieved to play well - I believe in this hall he does pure magic. Of course, he must be in the proper mood to find his way into the music. Chopin's 2nd concerto is an early work and certainly musically inferior to the later works but still, it stays one of my favourite piano concertos because of the gorgeous melodies, and no pianist plays them more beautifully than Pletnev. I will listen to Krakoviak tomorrow.
@789armstrong12 жыл бұрын
Pletnev has a great gift in that when he is in the mood he can tune in on the vibrations of the great masters like Chopin Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Chopin.Unfortunately he believes his great gift is self induced and starts taking outrageous liberties with the score, the critics nail him as does also the public.His name will therefore not be remembered as Richter and Horowitz several hundred years from now which is a real trajedy.His feeling in this Concerto is totally awesome.

Perfectly said! This miraculous playing makes me speechless. The orchestra and conducting are gorgeous, too, even though no orchestra in this world will be able to follow Pletnev into his world but this does not affect this performance. Pletnev's playing once again is overwhelming, like the piano became a part of him. His playing is so natural just like speaking. I believe Chopin whould have played his concerto this way.

Near the end of the 1st mvmnt of Concetto no. 1 I mentioned how Rubinstein accents the descending thirds, I noticed recently that Pletnev accents those same notes too! Meaning that he agrees with Artur Rubinsteins conception.

Плетнев играет самобытно, без всякого пафоса, спокойно, я бы сказала достойно, очень мне нравится. Послушайте еще этот концерт в исполнении Алексея Султанова. Mikhail Pletnev is among the very greatest pianists that have ever lived.I love his Chopin Concertos, but realistically speaking he has unfortunately created a reputation for being controversial, which will be very hard if not impossible to get rid of.The public unfortunately will never camp out all night on the sidewalk as it did for Horowitz, to buy tickets to his concerts.Pletnevs stunning legato will never be surpassed, but in a hundred years nobody will know.Thats reality my friend.

Critics love to stereotype since getting to know someone individually requires introspection.The most gorgeous piano playing I have ever heard in my life is Volodos transcription of Tchaikovsky's Berceuse opus 54 no. 10 I thank God I have it on DVD.You can watch it here on youtube also.I would love to hear your opinion on this particular piece and performance which I like over every piece I have ever heard.

Is it a particular version of this Concerto? In my score the orchestral parts are quite different in several passages. For example at the very beginning of the first movement I hear a clarinet, that is not written.
@789armstrong12 жыл бұрын
Pletnev plays this Concerto beautifully, impeccable technique and beautiful tone, Pletnevs trademarks, but I really think I prefer Krystian Zimmerman with Giulini and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.Zimmerman treats many of the repeats like an echo which is in my opinion pure magic.To glorify everything Pletnev does I believe does not do the man justice, since he is a member of the human race and is subject to moods and good and bad days as well.I also believe the 1st Concerto is more demanding.
@hotbebimauz11 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is Pletnev's arragement of the orchestration. He changed some things in order to make the orchestra sound more colourful.

I will listen to it. Volodos' transcriptions are very creative and way better than Cziffra's. Rachmaninoff also wrote gorgeous transcriptions. I think that Volodos is a top pianist but his Rachmaninoff is too superficial-virtuous. He has not reached the level of a genius yet. To me some of the best performances ever given are the Chopin Concertos and Rach 3 live by Pletnev and Schubert's Sonata D664 by Richter (There is a video in four parts on YT). I would love to hear what you think about it.
