composed between 7July and 18August 1934, the first performance was in Nov 1934 in Baltimore by Rachmaninov with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Stokowski/ THe first recording was made on 24 December 1934 and is now available on Naxos Historical CD qhich I have, I also have recordings by Katchen and by Ortiz Stephen Hough is on KZbin at the 2013 Proms

Once again, simply exceptional. He was 26 here and his playing has a maturity that belies his age. He's always had absolute fingers but his musical conceptions are unique and so very musically satisfying. I just love his playing. He's right up there for me and on some things unequalled. My out-of-the-box chintzy Bluetooth CD player sent me here. Tried to play my pristine CD copy of Pletnev performing this with Libor Pesek conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra only to discover that, because each variation is on its own separate track, my CD player inserts a slight pause between tracks as if it was playing a pop album. Never had that issue with more robust CD players in the 1990's and early 2000's. To YT's credit, I didn't have to "skip ad" in the middle of this great performance. Thank you.
