No it is cringey, and I don't really get the performance. It's cool to just cosplay, but adding a dance kinda made it weird because it was mostly just a lot of arm waving and hip shaking. In my opinion, it would add more depth to your understanding of your hobbies including Japanese culture, anime, Vocaloid, etc. I have casually studied this controversial issue for around six years. With my previous statement being the basis for this one, I believe you don't know what you're talking about, and it's times like these I feel ashamed of the anime community. What I'm about to say might offend you, but generally, you need to know where you went wrong. The OP didn't use the term correctly. That's not what that word means. I believe what Musical Trash was referring to was the widespread twisted meaning of this term. 'Otaku'-s are antisocial losers; they're the low trash of society in Japan. They are pretty frowned upon too, imo. I'd avoid a gross sweaty guy who's super obsessed with something too. The term generally refers to people who are obsessed with a hobby, and are very knowledgeable about it. For example, you could be a 'plant otaku', or a 'fish otaku', etc. As such, the term 'otaku' shouldn't be limited to being fond of anime, Vocaloid, Japanese culture, and other related hobbies. The use of the term otaku in Japan without context will not always point out that you like anime. The awful thing about that is, many diss the term 'weeaboo' and call themselves 'otaku'. There is no singular otaku community. An otaku community can be within a community of fans. Foreign people have twisted this term and many deny its original meaning. I don't understand why foreign people think they're so right about this. I get it, you want to express that you are fond Japanese culture, you like anime, etc. Personally, I feel that it would be more appropriate to say, "I like anime," or, "I'm a fan of anime, Vocaloid, and Japanese culture," because more often than not you will be misunderstood. Calling yourself an otaku would often indicate to a general public that you are a 'WEEABOO', and not just since you are: getting this wrong, misinforming people of the culture of Japan, and making it... shameful. Everyone I've ever known in real life and online who have used the term used it wrong at least once in their life, and though I've tried to explain to some, they still go on about it. They're not even that knowledgeable about their hobby. It's not even culturally correct anymore. Some deny it, going all "Well America really uses it that way; it's official." Like, where is it official? No where. The urban dictionary cannot be used in this situation to determine that. It's not in the dictionary. This slang was a term twisted by foreigners. Man... just say it straight... You like anime. Not all this I'm an otaku bs. I know that like 99.9% of people who use the term mean no harm, but even without you knowing it, it's still shameful, and maybe also offensive to Japanese people. Please, try to educate yourself before risking being a contributor to the spreading of wrong information, especially about one's country, one's language, and one's culture. I might be attacked for this but this also might be too long? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tl;dr Please don't do this again You were not just incorrect, you were also really rude. It will always be a great idea to study on things before you say them, even if you think you know the topic well, and it's even easier for you to do this since you're on the internet. Please be mature about this.
