I really like mounting and testing different carbs, ignitions and cams on my old Shovel ('75, 10:1 compression, standard stroke, dual plugged heads). The bike is very forgiving in that matter. She always starts and runs. The last carb I tested just for fun was a 40mm Keihin flat slide carb which belonged to a Kawasaki KX500 I had in my shop for some engine work. She ran really rough with that carb, but it was super fun to ride with all that spitting and farting. Last week I decided to test a Leinweber cam which a friend borrowed me and i noticed some binding when I checked the end play. Turned out I have about 0.1mm (4 thou) runout at the pinion shaft. Bummer. The old girl has to come apart...

Well I watch your channel to be entertained, but also in the hope of learning something new, and you never disappoint. I always believed enrichener and choke to be 2 different descriptions for the same thing, but it seems not! I'd love to hear more about that, if the opportunity ever presents itself. Thank you Mike & Mike for all you do. (And by the way, the shovel looks and sounds fantastic!) Best wishes from Oz. 👍🇦🇺

A choke is usually a butterfly plate that "chokes" off the air for cold starting. An enrichener is a controled circuit that supplies raw fuel for cold starting.

I’m Mark. I live in the San Bernardino mountains. I love the Mikuni carb. I know your bike has cams. So you will have to re jet. Pilot 27-30 and main 3 sizes bigger. Needle one step down. I think you may notice with stock jetting your bike will run Hot. The idol adjustment screw is really an air bleed screw. So to richen it turn it in. The throttle response is expressive. Looking word to your next video. I’m learning a lot.

I have a big twin 92 Evo and a 2002 sportster. I don’t know how to break open cases. I’m afraid of opening my big twin evo cam cover. As if you don’t get it right you will blow your motor. Respectfully Mike.

Hope I wasn't harsh. Tuning is a little difficult when you factor all of the modifications, plus temperature and altitude.
@markdube65234 ай бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 Totally agree. What I like about the Mikuni is that. Going from 5200 feet above sea level. Down to San Bernardino. All I have to do is turn up the idol a little bit. Same for going up the mountain. Turn it down. You’ll know when it’s to rich. The bike will hesitate, then just take off! I also, like the feature on the Mikuni. To change the main jet. Just loosen the screw on the bottom of the float bowl. Your SU Carb looks bad ass. I think once you play with the Mikuni you will love it. The performance and the fuel mileage. I’m getting 50+ on my sportster. I also, put a Mikuni on my 92 big twin evo. Just for the fuel mileage. I love my old Harley’s. The new Harley’s are just not for me.
@markdube65234 ай бұрын
Just a thought. Consider using the air filter you had on your SU carb. Free flowing. The Mikuni doesn’t have that butterfly valve. When your at full throttle. You see nothing but intake manifold. I heard it flows like a 53mm.

I think you're asking about my front end. It's 2008 bagger legs on old trees. Slightly modified FLH front fender (from the 60's) and 2000 and later front calipers. Go to our KZbin Homepage and look at all the thumbnails. There are videos on all that stuff.

Hi Mike , a random question here , What do you think abouth a magneto on a 1973 shovelhead ? loose the starter and battery. good experiance ? is it wurth the $$$$$ for a Morris magneto ? A Joe Hunt is way cheaper ! Let me know yor thoughts... Ride save Fred
@pacificmike95013 ай бұрын
Magnetos arre way cool. Why are they cool? They just are. They do work very well, but, in order to keep your lights bright at an idle, you'll need a battery. In order to start easily, you'll need to tune that magneto right. In other words, "right on." Once you get it tuned right, it will stay in tune. Morris is great. Joe Hunt is great. I've seen people run magnetos and electric starters. It's up to you. Mr. Joe Hunt himself personally built me a six cylinder Swiss Scintilla Vertex Magneto for my 1959 Austin Healey 100/6. That was back in the late 70's.

I had mikunis on my bonneville years ago. That thing would fly! So, now I have a vw beetle with a 1600cc engine in it. I asked on vw forums about putting mikunis on it, and nobody could give me a straight answer. Someone said it needs an accelerator pump? I’d like to do it, as I know mikunis, and they are so simple to adjust, and I love the throttle response! Anybody got any opinions on this set up?
