Nice video! Thanks for taking the time to make and post it! I do have two things to add: 1. After the caliper is cleaned with brake cleaner, do not touch it again with bare hands until all the paint has been applied. Touching it with bare hands will put skin oils on the part or paint and subsequent coats will not adhere properly in those spots. 2. After three hours, the paint will be dry, but it will not be cured. There is a difference. The paint will not be chemical resistant until after it is cured. To cure the paint, bake the part in a 200 degree FAHRENHEIT (you'll have to convert to Celsius on your own) oven for 1 hour. This will bake the paint onto the part, harden it, and chemically cure the paint. If you read the label on the VVT spray can, this is what it will tell you to do. You may want to remove the piston seals beforehand, or leave them in. I've read of people doing it both ways. Your call on that point.
@chriss83542 жыл бұрын
Is it unsafe to cure these in your household oven? Is there another option if you can't do the former?
@flyboy26102 жыл бұрын
@@chriss8354 Yes, you can safely cure PAINTED parts in your household oven. I let the parts dry for a couple of days to gas off, then oven cure them. I'll cure them in the oven, then turn off the oven with the parts still in it and let the parts slowly cure until they are cool to the touch. Takes a few hours. Powder coated parts, on the other hand, must NEVER, EVER under ANY circumstances be cured in any oven that will EVER be used to prepare food again! That stuff will poison the oven, and ultimately you! If you wish to powder coat parts, buy a cheap electric oven from the thrift store and use that exclusively for powder coated parts.
@Mace9072 жыл бұрын
@@chriss8354 Your mom will be pissed because the oven will always smell like paint after that. The best way to do it without ruining the oven at your house is to have a shitty old Craigslist electrical oven you picked up for $20 in your garage to cure stuff in. Large parts that don't fit in there either need a drying kiln like you'd see in a professional paint/powdercoat shop, or just use 2K paint with a separate hardener (or maybe some UV cure stuff with a UV lamp)

People giving this kid so much shit, granted he added a brembo sticker to a honda caliper; but half you pieces of shit drive some broken kia or don't have a license. Secondly; just had a company teach my crew and I some new ways to paint better/ help it last longer. To make that paint seal better, after you clean it off with brake cleaner, USE water. You don't want anything in between the cast metal/primer. Second, focus hard on priming every area. Any areas you miss dirt, grease, brake dust will get into and eventually ruin the paint & separate it from the cast (flaked paint.) Honestly not that bad of a job, but if you want the caliper to look a lot smoother, use a higher grit sandpaper.

A better option is to get stencils made and actually paint the lettering on with high temp paint. It'll last much longer. Vinyl can't withstand heat very well, as it will crack and peel. There is some specialty vinyl that can stand higher temps, but paint is still a better option for longevity.
@chriswalker42724 ай бұрын
Your finish looks lovely and convincing fakes 👍But no caliper piston checks or new seals fitted. I'm sure you must have checked by using compressed gas to open the pistons out and check. But if the caliper pistons are not stainless steel they do get rusty and the seals degrade and the bores can get scored, all of which would make all your beautification a waste of time. Stainless steel brake pipes sound a bit ott too, I use copper-nickel which is very good and more workable for bending and flaring to get a nice fit and a great look too.

Fun! Great video. Don’t touch the part with your bare hands. Oil and salt from your fingers will contaminate the surface. Media blasting might be a good option. Soap and water is recommended by Rust-Oleum. After you’ve cleaned the bare metal, test the cleanliness by spraying a bit of DI water to look for water beading up. Allow the paint to cure. Not just dry, but cure. Low heat in an oven or use a heat gun carefully. Allow time between coats of paint. My Rust-Oleum caliper paint can says 10 minutes min time between coats. It also says allow the paint to cure 7 days! I like the idea of a contrasting color for the bolt heads, esp. black.

Donald E I have several cars with brembo brakes from the factory. Those brakes look pretty much identical. I can not tell if they are for certain brembo but if they are not then the asians sure ripped brembo off!

IMHO, I think it would look a best if you took the bolts out and brought them back to bare metal.

You capitalised "properly" in the title but this is not properly. PROPERLY is splitting the calipers in half first to remove the bolts...

Agreed. For most bolts/hardware, it’s better to either polish them up & apply an anti-corrosion sealant or just buy new stainless steel hardware; b/c if the bare bolts do fit snug into the correct socket, as thin as those few layers of paint might be, you likely won’t be able to get the correct socket back on w/o scraping the paint right off. Even if the socket does happen to fit w/o scraping the paint off, the moment you apply a bunch of torque to get the bolts off or back on, all that force on the corners/edges of the bolt are gonna make the paint crack, chip, & start falling off anyway. So, it’s really just a waste of time. Granted, in his case, those calipers use Torx bit bolts. So, I’ll give it to him that the paint on the top/outsides may not be affected by the Torx bit socket… BUT, he didn’t do anything to keep the paint from getting on the inside of the bolt. Which will either get scraped/chipped off right away or run the risk of stripping the inside corners if he can’t get the Torx socket seated properly. There are 2 easy ways he could’ve protected the Torx bits from getting any paint on the inside: 1. Stuff the inside w/ something soft like cotton, that can easily squeeze into all the corners. or 2. Fill the inside of the Torx bit w/ something like grease, wax, clay, Vaseline, etc., & then just clean it out afterwards once the paint is dry. #2 is my preferred method, but IMO, as a finished product, stainless hardware just looks better overall. ***Pro Tip*** If you are painting something that has fine details/edges (for example: raised or recessed lettering) & you want the lettering etc. to be in a diff. color, do the following: 1. Mask, Prep, & Prime as normal. 2. Use whichever color you’ve chosen for the detailed area or lettering first & apply a few coats as normal. 3. Once dry to the touch (or after 24 hours), go back & use either your finger or cotton swab to coat the lettering etc. w/ car wax. Lightly apply just enough, that when it dries, the color underneath doesn’t show through. 4. Now, spray a few coats of your 2nd color of paint evenly over the entire area. 5. Once it’s completely dry, use a soft towel & simply wipe off all the car wax. Any of the 2nd color of paint will effortlessly wipe clean off any part where you applied the car wax. 6. Once clean, you can go back & apply a clear coat if desired. This is much much easier than trying to mask off complex edges or lettering, where the any amount of bleeding underneath would make the whole thing look like garbage.

Is there a clear high temp paint that can be applied to the decals so it doesnt get dirty and maybe peel off easily. Great tutorial dude

Nice video. Only criticism I had during the video was to tape off the rubber boots better. I might have done the bolts separately in flat black too. I am curious how these lasted given it has been 5 years now. Would you do anything different if you had to do it again?

Acura uses actual Brembo brand calipers for the sport trims of some of its cars. So even though it came from an Acura they are still legitimate Brembos.

Read the label on the VHT paint can. To fully cure the paint you have to bake the finished product at 200F for 1 hour.

Nice job. One thing I would add is that the rustoleum primer requires you to cure it for high heat applications. Some have had the paint flake off after a few months when it isn't cured properly. They have steps for curing on the vehicle and off. Off the vehicle requires you to heat it @ 250 for 30 mins cool 30 mins. Heat to 400 30 mins cool 30 mins. Heat to 650 (i just used broil in the oven) 30 mins cool 30 mins.

Pillarbox Red, nice choice! I'm going for a black (body) white (alloys) and red (features) palette. A little cliché I know but it's the first time I've done anything like this on a car!

Hello Millan nice video dude :) i did my break callipers on my bmw almost 2 months ago the same way but i used degreasing detergent before i started the peeling rust prosedure. At the end I got prety much the same result as you did and since i deal with a lot of stickers as a hobby i did the same thing i put a black ///M stiker and it looks awesome. What it hits me after everything was done was that it could of been made even better if before painting with the red color i did a little bit of black color just on the front than stick the stiker on top of it than start to paint everything in red color. That way at the end when you remove carefully the sticker it will show the black color below with the same effect but it will last longer just because the sticker can fell down after time ;) hope this gives you a nice idea that you can try and put in a new video.

I have done this and it works for a year or 2, if you are just commuting. If you are an autocross weekend guy use automotive paint or powder coat them. Painted mine properly. And it has been 4 year of some daily and track days.
