Many older people who have hearing loss don’t wear hearing aids on a regular basis. This is a mistake because hearing loss affects the speech center of the brain.

Donepezil is tier 1 I have been taking it for 4 months now. Fantastic improvement. @85, this Veteran is still improving. However, there are processes that are gone. Always been a super fast typist with an excellent vocabulary. A lot of that is gone. My dexterity with my fingers on the keyboard don"t remember where to go. Driving down the road, make a right turn into a new street and I know I turned onto the correct road, but, I don't remember where I am and where I was going.

Thank you for this very informative video. I am 80 and notice that I often grapple with remembering a word or a name of some famous person. I will keep monitoring myself and see a professional person if I notice an increase in these problems.

Thanks for watching, Sheila! It can be a part of NORMAL aging for it to take longer for your memory to retrieve a name or fact, so don't be too hard on yourself. But please reach out to your health provider if you're worried about your memory. They can help.

Serious traumatic brain injury also causes mild cognitive impairment. And can confirmed on neuropsychological testing. This happened to me after a MVa age 38 I completing a bachelors psych, a bachelor of science Kines and masters in kinesiology and three years of my PhD in kinesiology. I was a published researcher. Extremely competitive athlete I’m also a clinical dietician and work with people who have brain impairment and agree with the ketogenic Plan. So please add this to your future talks that people with TBI at a young age can develop MCI. Great video love the information thank you

Thank you for the video. It was very informative. I’m trying to find out about MCI because my friend has been diagnosed as having it. Not having been around her lately because of Covid has made me shocked at the change in her. She takes numerous walks a day because she says “there’s nothing to do.” I walk with her once a day and she has difficulty with word retrieval, which I expect with her diagnosis, but she has forgotten her daughter-in-law’s name, names of her long-standing neighbors, and she retells the same stories within a walk. (Sounds like I’m worried that it’s more serious than MCI. Doesn’t it?) My big question, though, is - should I encourage her to do things? For example, she used to read quite a bit, and bake, and sew. Her husband has tried to get her to do puzzles and I asked her about it and she just says, “I’m not good at that.” Should I suggest activities like her trying adult coloring, or come up with sewing projects we could do together ?

Lyn, you sounds like a wonderful friend! When people start experiencing memory changes , they can lose confidence in themselves, and just don't trust their brains to work as well as before, which can result in dropping some well loved activities. Of course, that can also happen with depression, so that would be important to consider. The daily walking is a super healthy habit and offering to do some activities together, that might be less demanding, is a great idea. We worry about MCI developing into something more serious when we see that day-to-day function is impaired, such as getting lost on a familiar walking route or leaving the stove on repeatedly. If those signs come up, then it's a good time to get more evaluation. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!

Hi I live in london and I was diagnosed with MCI last year it was a bit of a shock and it's on my mind constantly, next week I'm going for my yearly check and convinced myself that the doctors going to say its got worse, does it cause depression, or any physical problems do you know I think knowing you have it can make you think that if you forget something it's always down to the mci, think most people's memories change as the get older, I suppose you have to except it and hope for the best 🤔

My husband was told he has MCI they can't seem to find out what caused it, his BP is really high most the time; he hasnot an ounce of fat on him, and he eats salads but love ice cream. I notice he does repeat stories that are in the context of the discussion. He's on a low dose of BP I'm trying to convince him to go back to the doctor and have her increase the dose, he's been on this med for a couple years now. Yes, he's seeing neurologist.

Thanks for this wonderful video. I was recently diagnosed with MCI, which explains why work has been such a challenge these past few years. I do fire science analytics and struggle to retain, understanding and process information in written and data form. The problem is the “mild” in MCI suggests it’s not a big deal. My company is willing to provide “accommodations” so that I can continue to work. I would prefer early retirement as I worry a mistake in my analysis will affect human safety and I am frustrated/exhausted trying to keep up at work. I am 50 years old. Is MCI simply a term of art that in no way suggest one can continue to function in their current profession?

Thank you so much for your presentation! My Lumbar puncture, and FDGPET SCANS THIS YEAR SHOWS BIOMARKERS FOR ALZHEIMERS. BUT I have not been diagnosed at this time. I have been referred to a specialist that treats geriatric patients for cognitive testing, and for an Amyloid PET AT MY STATE’S UNIVERSITY. MY NEUROLOGIST also prescribed Aricept which I did not fill at this time. I’m waiting to see the Specialist. What do you think?

It would be compassionate, as well as wise to present the work of Dr. Dale Bredesen, as he has done great work helping those with cognitive decline. He has shown that cognitive decline can be stopped, and healing can occur With accurate diagnosis and treatment protocols in the greater majority of those that have been in the numerous studies that he and his colleagues have conducted.

I'm so glad you liked the video! It depends on the type of MCI, but they may notice more difficulty with multitasking, word-finding, short-term memory and planning complex tasks (like organizing a big party). People with MCI should be able to do everything they always did mentally, but may take longer or need to use more post-it notes or other memory aids.

My sister was asked to draw a clock with a certain time (10 after 11). She got that wrong. She was also asked to remember 3 words but couldn’t. Her doctor thinks this is MCI. This doesn’t sound like the kind of test you’re talking about.
@TheWrinkle
@TheWrinkle 2 жыл бұрын
The 3-word recall and clock are tests that we commonly use in the office to screen for cognitive changes that are outside of normal. But it takes more than a test to diagnose MCI or dementia. That's why we Geriatricians do a full head-to-toe assessment!

@@TheWrinkle Asking someone to remember 3 words in a stressfull situation can be the CAUSE of trouble of remembering. Stress and anxiety cause me problems that I don't normally have. I can't tolerate being in a MRI machine. A horrible thing to do to people and whoever invented MRI should be confined in a MRI machine !

my son is 15 yrs old and has been diagnosed with mild neurocognitive disorder. does being diagnosed at a younger age leave a greater chance of developing dementia?
@TheWrinkle
@TheWrinkle 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis and I don't have a lot of (professional) experience with teenagers. Cognitive impairment can happen for many reasons, such as a genetic difference, an issue that happened at birth, or some other trauma or toxic exposure. In many cases the cause of a young person's cognitive difference is stable and won't progress, or may even improve with some treatment or education, so I would hope for the best in a case like yours!

Every topic is of interest, and includes good information, but I can’ t keep up with her speedy speech to absorb it all, even after repeating the discussion on line several times.Perhaps some visuals could be added, eg. Diagrams, charts, pictures of folks doing things. Karen in Ontario.
