Hollywood earned a lot of money with her as a sexsymbol, this role destroyed her. Lauren Bacall turned her back to Hollywood and went to Broadway as actress, Hollywood is really destroying actors in high numbers! Marylin Monroe had no idea and strenght to change her role!

@Woohoo Marilyn really never had any true self-esteem. Oh, she knew she could turn people on, but I think her sexuality and "sexiness" was all she believed in about herself. Her story is a sad one. She wouldn't have been able to see, or TRULY believe in, her talent even if she would have won an Academy Award. Marilyn was so insecure and unbelieving in herself. Such a shame.

I first watched Marilyn Monroe's films in a time I was ill and looking for things to binge. I wanted to see her films to find out what all the fuss was about, and became an instant fan. But I didn't watch Clash by Night as she didn't have a main role and it sounder grimmer than what I wanted to watch at the time; so it's nice to see her scenes clipped out here! One thing I've noticed about her acting, which I think is charming, is that she always gives her full attention to the people she is talking to, usually keeping her eyes on their faces the whole time.

It's a shame when you watch Marilyn here that Fox had to later straight jacket her into dumb blonde sexpot roles. Sadly though that was the times. Marilyn was still charming in her starring roles but they were so limiting. Jean Harlow got a better deal in the 1930's when she got to be smart and wise-cracking in her roles. Marilyn could have been that way if there had been roles like that in the 1950's.

I don't believe that a woman who, after having suffered so much in her childhood and adolescence, after having tried so hard to surpass herself and achieve excellence; and, after having achieved stardom and recognition and with so many plans and projects ahead, try to commit suicide. Among all the vicissitudes she had to go through, she always kept faith and hope. Furthermore, she had a heart of gold and very noble and generous feelings; therefore, such a sublime soul has no intention of hurting anyone, much less hurting herself. The Most Beautiful Woman Ever!

This is a great film. It reminds me a bit of the kitchen sink films we got in the UK a decade later. Seeing Marilyn in a turban and working in a factory is priceless. Marilyn was most proud of her performance "Asphalt Jungle" . She went on about it for years. But I think she is much stronger in this film. Pity she would'nt acknowledge this great piece of work. Her interaction with the great Barbra Stanwick is touching. Keith Andes gave her one of the sexiest leading men, and she stood her ground. Monroe, as was her habit, had trouble remembering her lines. Stanwyck, as was her habit, had the entire script memorized before filming began. Once, when Monroe had a flock of reporters and fans around her, a crew member asked why a no-talent was so popular. Stanwyck replied that with a body like hers, Monroe did not need talent. Still, Monroe later said that Stanwyck was the only old-time movie star who was nice to her.

@@joygernautm6641 The notion of a man like that is not realistic in my opinion. Yes, these men existed in the past...and still do. But even those men have been highly idealized by both men and women. Partially due to movies and stories in general. Even the way we look at our fathers' is partially eschewed by our own hopes and biases. One of the main issues is the hero complex. Men and women have spent too much time looking up to idealized "warriors" and "knights in shining armor", that they have failed to look at reality. Supposed "confidence" is just an idea that has many definitions based on the individual. Stoicism is a practice and state of being. And it can be experienced by literally anyone willing to make the effort...man or woman. This inner practice is largely neglected by everybody, and thus we are in the state we are in today.

@RGDCanada. I agree, I just fell through the floor when I heard that, laughing at how perfectly cute that line fit. She was smashing and totally aced it , much talent, so much human dignity and womanly lady-like wholesome appeal. There shall never be any replacement for Our Leading Lady, Actress Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean)………. If only MM knew how terrific she was! Her stardom one of a kind……. Shine forever, Bright Star…………..

Wow, didn’t know this existed. She was wonderful not playing a bombshell - great actress. Barbara Stanwyck was also a superb actress.

Mine didn't! He was strong but so gentle with me, I loved him for it too. About the only time he was really upset with me was if I did something he thought wasn't safe. I got in trouble if he came home & the doors weren't locked, lol.
