After watching a few videos on this topic I wanted to have a rant 🤣
Lots of folks get a bit too emotional about the morality of a counterfeit guitar. What do you think?
Not my normal video, just a topic I'm interested in among many.

"Morals are for people who can afford them." I am not so sure about that. I guess you do you. I don't see buying a knockoff guitar as a question of morality. Now buying them to resale as the real thing, definitely immoral. Not to the brand but to the person you are selling to. These companies have nothing but their greed to blame.

In the words of the IT Crowd - "People ... what a bunch of bastards". There's always Cork Sniffers in the guitar world. The people who can’t see past the alleged purity of tube amps, or a pre CBS Telecaster Leo rubbed his winky off. People should just do what makes them happy, and other people should let those people be happy too. I’m a bass player who has the fucking audacity to use a 6 string and a pedalboard. You’d swear I was diddling people’s pets with how upset they get with my kit choice. I have no idea what causes it. Great video mate - and glad to see the headless guitar’s headstock is a little less penisy. Slash was credited for bringing back the Les Paul and making it super popular again. I'm pretty sure that the guitar he used to do that was a copy made by some bloke called Max. If you're buying it to play it and you love it, it should be none of anyone else's business. If you're buying it to trick people and sell it for Gibson prices, that's dodgy AF. Common sense and decency is what it's all about.

Great point! After owning a few Les Pauls, I ended up buying a Chibson Les Paul. I even drove two hours each way to buy if from a craigslist seller and not sorry I did. It's a beautiful tobacco/violin burst that came with ivory knob tuners, Seymour Duncan humbuckers and the switch and controls are good and solid and function very smoothly. I'm torn about whether or not I should replace the hardware and pickups, as the guitar plays and sounds great just as it is. I wonder if it was made in Korea or Indonesia. I can see no filler around the fretboard or headstock inlays. All I've done to it so far was to straighten the neck when I changed the strings and cleaned the fretboard and treated it with lemon oil. Any future work or parts exchanges will be done after spending more playing time with this guitar and comparing it to a couple of my others. I must admit I am transferring from guitar snob to realist. There are MANY companies making inexpensive guitars that sound and play as well as the big-ticket brands. So far, no other guitar players have even questioned if it's the real deal or not. I own Fenders, Charvels, Gibsons and Ibanez guitars, and although it sure was nice to be able to buy those guitars when I was still working, and I have own question for the cork sniffers out there. Would you rather drop your $4k Les Paul and break the headstock off, or a $400 Chibson?

I've been a Tokai user since 1987. I was often asked why I didn't Fender or Gibson them - my response has always been that Tokai Japan is a legitimately excellent brand and I'm proud to use them AND if it hadn't been for the companies in Japan like Tokai, Gibson and Fender would not have been pushed to get their QC act together. Also Tokai made primarily for the domestic market and did change headstocks to differentiate for the export market, and Fender certainly did want them to build the Fender Japan series - but at the expense of Tokai surrendering their brand name which they refused to do - they make their own designs too! You're right - its not the Chibsons per se, but those wanting the logo for cheap - there are plenty of cheap excellent versions out there without Gibson on the headstock.

Real eye opener, but, I’m old enough and confident enough in my own skin to not give a single fuck what some guy I don’t know wants to shout at me because they think I’m Bill Gates for buying a Gibson and saying that it was better than my Epiphones, which i do love. 😄…. Id be down to buy an Epiphone and do it up if the cheap Epiphones looked nice, but its clear that the companies keep the nice finishes for higher priced models. This might just be an Aus thing though. A James Hetfield style chibson explorer is like $250USD. There is no available cheaper option to buy other than the high end Gibson several thousand dollar version.

Man this Chibson video really puts a smile in my face.😊 I'm one of the few people who Subscribed to your channel because of your first Chibson video and it's sad to know that you won't be uploading another Chibson video again🥲because those guitar videos really inspired the red pilled Chibson lovers. I actually bought another Chibson, a Buckethead Les Paul after I watched your video and it's another spectacular guitar especially "AFTER" the professional full set-up.👌Since you said this is your last "Chibson" video that you will be making. Lemme share some insights on why we choose the "Chibson" over other cheap brands apart from the obvious that it has the "iconic" logo - for a fraction of the price.🤭 - Chibsons have some of the best "Mahogany" wood (depending on the seller), mine have this very resonant wood even unplugged, it's on par with the $5,000 overpriced Gibson. - Chibson looks beautiful (the paint is Polyurethane),for those who are not a fan of relic, this is perfect, It will looks brand new always and it's glossy. (Gib-Nitro= fades and age) - Chibson is an upgrade, they fixed the "original" design flaw, (deep neck angle) - the reason Gibson never stays in tune, because the "purists" don't want to fix it - "vintage" rules!😂 - contrary to internet opinions, NOT all Chibson hardwares are crap. My Chib sounds amazing with stock pickups and my only upgrade was the "bone" nut.👍 - friends and family always admire it when I play it for them, they said it's "expensive" and beautiful. I even let a few of my guitar mates to play it and they said it's an amazing Gibson. - it inspires me to play better especially when some guitar/ gear snobs look at the headstock and nod in approval. They dont have an idea that.......(nevermind.)😆 - internet gear elitist are always crying that so many people are enjoying their "Chibson" while they got scammed by buying the overpriced original that never stays in tune. - Chibson is a silent protest for companies ripping off people by selling very expensive guitars but the quality is waaaay below the hefty price. - It show's you can own, play and create a guitar equal or even better than the original at a fairly low reasonable price. Owning a Chibson is the "equalizer", before anybody lectures about morals. They should first lecture about why profiteering and ripping off people by selling very expensive guitar with low quality is not right. Why buy a product that is worth $7,000 when theres a same product that's just a fraction of the price yet offers the same value, albeit a bit less but reasonable. So it's obvious: Chibson rules FTW!🤘💯 Happy New Year and keep building awesome guitars mate!👍Cheers!🔥

My two cents, I think a counterfeit product says more about the customer than the guitar. Now, I don't really care about Gibson because they are not losing a sale for some yahoo buying a $300 Chinese guitar. My take is why bother when you can just buy a used Epiphone? But honestly buy what you like and play what brings you the most joy! Personal story, I bought a Gibson SG back in the 1990s and I ended up years later I had a Samick SG copy and to me, the Samick was a better overall guitar. Especially after I upgraded it.😎👍✨🖤
@GuitarsAreHard
@GuitarsAreHard 27 күн бұрын
I think you're spot on! Especially about not losing a sale. But have you seen the price of Epiphones these days? There's a big difference in 'quality' / 'finishing touches' (fret nubs etc), and in the amount of wood wasted (single pieces etc), plus better woods, BUT not as big a difference in PRICE as there used to be. What I'm trying to say is that Gibsons cost a lot more to make (materials, hardware & time), and feel more premium, but Epiphones are not budget guitars. Epiphones are great but Gibsons feel better with more sonic nuances - although not really the way I play - but boy do you pay for those differences! An Epiphone will not always scratch the itch for a 'real' Gibson, even if it's just down to the name on the headstock. I have two Gibsons (2022 Tribute + 2023 50's Standard) & two Epiphones (2023 Custom + 1990's LP100). The Gibsons are a different league but the Epiphone custom sounds so good. Hell, even the 30+ year old budget guitar roars!

@GuitarsAreHard I've played Epiphone against Gibson and I will admit there is a "Feel" difference in my hand but sound wise, I sound damn near the same. I have an Epiphone Les Paul Special in TV Yellow that I love and I bought that guitar when it came out at the lower price. Now, I do like top of the line Epiphones like a Sheraton,. Elite series, and the Casino Anniversary... that said besides those most Epiphones are nowhere near $1k. I also said used so I would rather buy a neglected 15 years old Epiphone Standard Les Paul and upgrade the electrics and pickups for not a lot of money. Or you can go with Schecter.🤔

The pickups are still in there, and Epiphone branded - and I've no doubt that that's what they are: I have Epi's with the same pups and they're just identical. Sound great! The bridge was the weak spot on mine, replaced it with a Schaller, and it's solid now. Other hardware I've kept until it fails, no need to swap them out just yet. Fret job was necessary, and I put on new (graphite) nut because... Well, I can. It handles various tunings absolutely fine, has enough sustain (nobody holds a note for more than 10 seconds anyway, ever noticed that?), and it plays well enough. Admittedly: my Epiphone Les Paul plays a bit better, but she's a lucky find - I've seen worse LPs from Epi over the years. The biggest joy I get out of my Chibson is simply playing a guitar with all the looks of a £4k instrument, but costing me only 250 including shipping + a new bridge I already had... Should I sell it, it'll definitely say this: It is *not* a real Gibson, it's just a Chinese copy. Fair's fair.

Wilkat Guitars may be a retired business but I'm still playing and tweaking my guitars and some for friends so I know a thing or two. I will say that the Chinese, like the Japanese before them, have improved their guitars over the years and can satisfy those who can't afford what they really want. I once worked for a large distributor of musical instruments in Canada and some of the things I saw there were amusing but some also impressive. Although we had to tweak a lot of the low end guitars before they went out to music shops there were quite a few that could be turned into real "players" with a few upgrades to pickups etc. I enjoyed your take and will tune into to see some of your builds because I know exactly what you meant about how you enjoy building your guitars. 👍👍

Many of those Chibson tops are not a panel, but a veneer instead. Beware. The fretboards can be synthetic too, not wood. And the nuts can be plastic. The electronics always suck, so expect to replace all of that. The tuning machines too. And expect to polish the frets. Basically, everything but the wood construction is sub-par. In my experience, however, they play as well as the real thing. Personally, I'd never buy one with a logo on it. That's crooked. Some people drill out the 'o' in Gibson, to show it's a fake.

For the longest time I've wanted a Gibson Firebird. But those are always way out of my price range. Especially the model that I wanted (the sunburst model.) So I debated buying a Chibson as they didn't run in the thousands to buy. Far less as you can imagine. Then recently Epiphone did a run on red Firebirds reissue complete with the proper tuning heads and pickups. I happened to find one on Reverb that didn't break my bank. I went for that. Pleased as punch with it ever since. Epiphone did a brilliant job on that one. My conscience is clean.

I spent the 1990s working in a guitar shop, and a few things come to mind after watching this. First of all, you get a lot more guitar for your money these days. Even within the Epiphone line, the straight Les Paul they make now is way better than what they were making back then. And adjusting for inflation, they're no more expensive - about £300 then to £450 now. We used to sell the cheapest available starter packages at Christmas (don't blame me, parents wouldn't/couldn't spend the money), and I always did my best to make sure the £89 Encore Strat copies were playable. The likes of the Squier Debut Strats you can get now for about £110 are miles better. And don't get me started on how bad almost all practice amps were back then... Something that was true then, and remains true now, is that small incremental improvements in quality become exponentially more expensive as you move up the pecking order. A Fender Vintera Strat is about a grand versus less than £400 for a Squier Classic Vibe. The Fender Vintera is not more than twice as good as the Squier, nowhere near it, but people will dig that bit deeper into their overdrafts for those small upgrades (ask me how I know). For example, the nitro finish on your Tribute LP makes an incredibly subtle difference to the feel of the guitar, but to apply it results in a substantial hike in price. Even tiny things like the quality of the screws have a significant impact on the price by the time the guitar moves through the chain from the production line to the retailer. I read somewhere that every cost is roughly quadrupled by the time a product reaches a shop (don't hold me to that), so an extra £10 spent on a part at the factory means £40 added to the RRP. Ultimately, it comes down to how much an individual player is willing and/or able to pay for those incremental upgrades in quality. Enough of us are happy to spend the extra to keep Gibson, PRS, Fender at al in business. As for Chibsons, I'm agnostic. I wouldn't buy one simply because I don't have confidence in getting something worthwhile on my doorstep six weeks after ordering, no matter how cheap it is. I'd be interested in you expanding your comments on pickups. I've been dabbling with winding my own, and it's really shifted my perspective on that market. There's a lot of snake oil out there...

The trick to a great pickup is is a good solid wind. The number of turns is a well known fact these days depending on what type of sound you want. You can buy machines that can wind pickups in minutes with a tight consistent wind. No different to what they are doing at Seymour Duncan or wherever. Initial outlay to wind pickups can be expensive (although you can build a very good pickup winder for next to nothing) I've made several humbuckers now and I have to say they all sounded amazing. I will never buy an expensive pair of pickups again. It's daylight robbery.

I must say that this video is 💯 fact based. I myself like certain chibsons from certain builders. Not to resell, but rather to collect. My models are mostly signature models. Some could never be acquired if they were authentic. They are a great piece of rock n roll memorabilia. To have on the walls. But happen to play well also. There is a huge range of quality in the chibson range as they can be built by the lowest bidder. However, some can be simply outstanding, but also pricey entering the 6-7 hundred dollar range for all of the features we would expect on a high end guitar, such as a bone nut stainless frets, it's pots, orange drops, maple cap. Etc... but still couldn't be done here in the USA for that price. In the end, the name is just having what your guitar heroes represent. I mean, who would want an Angus young SG that didn't say Gibson? But also I have a James Hetfield OGV copy that says Gibson on the trussrod cover just like his. His was not a Gibson either. But the point is James guitar says it. It's a fan's guitar, nothing more. I love all guitars . Low end high end and everything in between. Some hate me for my Chibson's. Some love me for them. I say all guitars are just guitars. Don't get bent all out of shape over other people's things. You've hit the nail right on the head. This video was a very excellent look at the truth. In the end who cares? We will all play a d collect what we like. We are not all the same, but let's respect each other. Your brutal truth earned a subscription from me. There is as much immorality involved in counterfeit guitars as there is in Gibson pricing strategy. Many moons ago there were artisans at Gibson who carved and shaped guitar bodies and necks using simple hand tools. An arduous and time consuming process which was then ultimately and understandably expensive. Every Gibson guitar of the 50's and 60's (apart from the necks on late '60's guitars which were machine cut) is unique because every one was slightly different depending upon who built it and what frame of mind they were in on a particular day. Pre CBS Gibson pickups were also hand wound giving some pickups a very individual sound. Enter the modern age of CNC and electronically guided machine manufacture. Not only are the manufactured components identical to one another within the specified production tolerances but the actual production cost per unit is much, much less expensive. Of course Gibson passed these huge savings on to their customers LOL. No chance! Gibson then and now, screwed their customers for as much money as they possibly could and can. As a supplementary source of income they started sueing anyboby and everybody for patent enfringements, which is ironic because some Gibson copies were arguably better than the originals. There are many professional guitar players who own and play original Gibsons (or Fenders for that matter) but there are many more collectors, flippers and scammers who's sole interest in Gibson is to make money. A quick reminder to everyone. The single cut Les Paul was a market flop in the USA, resulting in a cease of manufacturing in 1961. Enter the Brits! The British rock and pop revolution had begun. Guitars were expensive and hard to come by but there were Les Pauls available if you had the cash or could borrow it. Amps were also hard to get and very expensive, especially Fender amps. Enter Jim Marshall and some of his employees who designed and manufactured the first Marshall amplifiers loosely based on Fender design but using electronic parts that were both affordable and available on the UK market. A three-way marriage made in Heaven. Brit guitarists playing Gibson Les Pauls through Marshall amplifiers. This was so successful that it led to the re-introduction of the oriiginal Les Paul single cut to the Gibson production line. A fact that Gibson never gave recognition to, they just coined in the money. p.s. I don't own a Gibson Les Paul . I have an excellent 'law suit' copy made in the Matsumoko factory in the '70's, bought in the '80's. No regrets.

" because some Gibson copies were arguably better than the originals." Agreed! the legendary Slash "Chibson" Les Paul guitar used in the multi platinum album Apetite for Destruction is not a Gibson but a fake one made by a famoust luthier (Chris Derrig- something?), It also had a "Gibson" logo just like the Chibsons today. That fake guitar used in the album is what resurrectted Gibson and they are now making copies of the fake guitar that saved their company. 😂 Also according to luthiers, with the use of CNC, making great guitars nowadays are not only easier but it's way less expensive, I've talked to a pro luthier who creates handicrafted guitars and he said with CNC, the current original Gibson Les Paul should only cost about $250 to $300 but No chance......."Of course Gibson passed these huge savings on to their customers LOL. No chance! Gibson then and now, screwed their customers for as much money as they possibly could and can. As a supplementary source of income they started sueing anyboby and everybody for patent enfringements."👍and the Gibson advocates are mad at Chibson patrons for morals.😆😁 Yikes!

Totally agree with you, play whatever makes you happy. I own several nice guitars including an early 70s Fender Strat and a couple of Gordon smiths, but nothing beats my no name tele partscaster that i cobbled together in my shed.

2 times now I have bought the ESP model I always wanted. I have a snakebyte and a vulture. Both Chinese. Immediately swapped out all the electronics for EMG, glued in new Tusq nuts, leveled & polished the frets, dropped in locking tuners, and soaked it in Fretboard oil. Both were done for less than $600 each and are amazing playing and looking guitars! I recently bought a Squire Jim Root Tele.... It was also Made in China, by Fender. so. rock on. \m/_ _\m/

Great stuff, new subscriber. Found you via the Gilmore Strat build series. I have a few guitars, not an extensive collection, l gig quite a bit with a band (rhythm/ vocals). My go-to, for the past 11 years, has been a Gibson Les Paul Studio. No nonsense workhorse, battered, dropped many times (thankfully the neck is maple) Buckle rash, worn nitro etc. Until death do us part. I bought a Chib ‘greenie’ for 90 quid on a whim. Stripped it of all electronics and hardware, replaced the lot. I did a bit of fretwork, nothing much, and all is good with it. It plays and sounds just as good as the Gibson, but I do feel a fraud when gigging it.

Its true what you say about hearing with you eyes. I bought a Squier Vintage Modified strat "surf guitar" (my wife ordered me to buy a guitar in Surf Green seeing as I'm down to my last dozen or so strats - she's a keeper). It turned out to be a beautiful playing guitar but had these 'orrible lipstick pickups - I hated them; but they were very good sounding pickups, and high output too, but I wanted them gone. So I replaced the scratchplate with one suited you regular pickups and fitted some Russian Pribora pickups which are absolute cannons, but probably not much better (or worse) than the lipstick ones. The whole process was about cosmetics really, and I sold the lipsticks in the scratchplate on fleabay to someone who liked them. To be fair, the Squier turned out to be so nice, my 1989 strat plus that has about 2000 gigs behind it now stays home, so its not completely about cosmetics, but its how it started.

I just bought a Epiphone Zakk Wylder Ripoff for about €80,- … just as you said … for playing around, getting a feeling for setting up and modifying your guitar. I stripped it completely down and actually… this won’t be a display only guitar (I love the Wylder design … bought it by eye 😂) … the neck is straight, the frets are completely even (no rocking at all at no point) … the electric has to be replaced completely. One humbucker was almost dead, the pots made a suspicious sound when turning and the three way switch couldn’t decide what position it should keep … but as you said … I spent about €70,- on parts from AliExpress and now I‘m in the process of putting it all together.

Just found this channel and I love it! Strips out all the bullshit, and chucks in a nice dose of British humour and straight talking. Already one of my favourite guitar based channels. I also don't judge Chibson owners, as long as they never sell them on as the real thing. I have one among a collection of 'proper' American Fender and Fender style guitars. I prefer single coil guitars but I wanted a HB guitar for the occasional use. Is it as good as a real Gibson? No, obviously, and yes I've played many and even owned one for a short period. But it is 80 - 90% as good for 10% of the cost, if you dont mind a bit of work straight out of the box, and are prepared to upgrade some bits. Mine had great pickups, played beautifully, but needed a fret dress, nut and decent tuners. I have seen and played some that are utter garbage that will forever be unplayable no matter what you do to them. A friend bought one that didn't even have a truss rod, just a glued on allen key socket for appearances! It is a nice piece of wall art! I guess I got lucky. Just know that it really is a gamble when you hit Ali Express. If you want a guaranteed to be good budget LP style guitar, buy a Harley Benton or East Coast guitar. It will do the business even if it doesn't look quite like the real thing.

My "proper" guitars are a beautiful PRS SE Custom and an Epiphone Flying V, but the guitar I'm playing most at the most is the first of a dozen I've built at home. It started as a kit Les Paul clone but I've stripped it down and replaced everything a couple of times and now, with some no-name Chinese ceramic humbuckers in it and running through a Metal Zone (which seems to be an object of scorn itself across the internet) it's giving me exactly the sound I want. I'm a very limited player hanging on the coat-tails of guys with real talent, but what we're doing when we plug in is exactly what I'm looking for. TL;DR: the badges don't matter. It's about personal satisfaction.

Merry Christmas! Enjoyed your no-BS commentary. Recently, a colleague of mine brought in a white Gibson Firebird V with minihumbuckers and a Maestro Vibrola. I asked: "how much did you pay? $5000? $6000?" And he said, "200 - it's a Chibson I just picked up from Craigslist!" I was shocked. Having never seen many Gibson Firebirds in person, I just couldn't tell! Looked like the real thing, as far as I know.

Well I can’t hear the difference between any of those guitars and I’m pretty sure that you couldn’t tell if one was a Gibson. I’ve got a Pearl Les Paul must be about 50 years old at least, I bought it for £100 about 40 years ago , I’ve had it set up once or twice , it’s a dream machine low fast action no buzzes plenty of dings and it weighs a ton , it far outclasses me and my abilities but I had a young wizz kid have a go on it and it was beautiful , I’m just trying to get it to do for me what it did for him . Well done Paul , I love your posts , intrigued by your guitar building and jigs , most excellent 👌

Agreeing with you. I'm not overspending for a brand built anything. Yes, the expectation that a Gibson or Fender should be polished, flawless and setup correctly with high quality components are all valid reasons to pay big bucks for the real thing, but honestly, Gibson's affiliate brands such as Kramer and Fender brand guitars are being built, for the most part, in Indonesia, Mexico and China as well as the Chibsons. Quality control on the brands is slipping while QC is getting better on the Chibsons. At least the Chibsons sell for a fair market price. There is a cost to purchasing Chibsons as you pointed out with finsh and setup. As well, Gibson and Fender are not the same companies as they were at their founding. Like most branded makers, both have been owned by various groups and firms, so you are not supporting the original "Gibson" or "Fender" companies anyways. To their credit both are still owned by American companies. Gibson guitars, not Epiphones, are American made unlike all of the brands that fall under the Fender name. Interesting researching the company's histories.

I've been a luthier since 1980. I bought a '57 Chibson Gold Top replica, a curiosity buy for $250.00. I treated it to a set of tuners, and then I did a fret dress and a setup. It plays fine and the stock pickups are not offensive but I have a set of Gibson Burst Buckers I removed from my R0 that will find a home in there. It looks great and we do hear with our eyes, but I'm pleased with it.

Absolutely! I had a Gibson Standard, never used it for gigs for fear of damage or loss. Honestly, I was also a little underwhelmed with it. I bought a chibson greenie from p4m, I paid £100 for a setup and fret level, put some probuckers and locking tuners on it, and it's great. I use it for gigs and not bothered if it gets knocked etc

Bit of the Comfortably Numb solo going on in the Demos 👍 The EMGs have plenty of clarity but I'm on a more 'rounded' vintage phase at the moment, so I'd take the Gibson or Chibson from a sonic perspective. Would I buy a Chibson? Maybe, I would have but not now. I did buy an Ibanez Jem clone that turned out to be a far better guitar than it deserved to be for a couple of hundred quid delivered. Instead, I bought a used Epiphone LP that needed a fret level and set-up. I sorted that, changed the pups and even added some bespoke electronics. Just never gelled with it for some reason. Next step, my 2016 Gibson LP Studio HP has just been pure magic from day one. Absolutely stock except I set it up to my preference. The Titanium adjustable nut is a brilliant idea - why did nobody like it? The 490R/498T pups take a bit of stick on the interweb forums but they're exactly what I wanted to hear. Neck pup with around 7 on the Tone Control is spot on "Parisienne Walkways" to my ear. The guitar cost £800 used. Job done! I agree with you. If you can get what you want from a cheap mildly modded guitar (especially, if you can do it yourself), then that's all you need. Life's too short to fall for all the Marketing BS (e.g. Tone Woods, Tone Plastics and Tone Colours..).
