Miles Morales Is A Filler Character NOT Spider-Man | Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse Explained

In Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse Miles has a big problem and it’s actually the reason all of the Spider-Men are after him, when Miles Realizes, that apparently he’s a filler character. After following Gwen through the dimensional gateway she used to travel into Mumbattan and ultimately going with her to the HQ of the Spider Society, Miles meets with Miguel O’Hara Spider-Man 2099, and Miguel tells Miles that not only is he not supposed to be there, but he isn’t even supposed to be spider-man. Miguel literally tells Miles that he’s NOT CANON, pretty much calling him a filler character that is itself an anomaly that constantly interferes in situations and causes other anomalies that put entire universes in danger, saying that all of the Spider’s have destined paths they have to go down and that Miles can’t break the cycle, or atleast that he can’t allow him to.

I never understood this, miguel claimed if miles were never there peter wouldnt have died, but even if he didnt save miles peter wouldve died anyway. He was tired, had goblin, prowler, and kingpin to fight. Goblin still wouldve caught him, he still wouldve been too slow to put the goober in ans shut down the collider, and due to this still wouldve died, leaving NO one to stop kingpin and miles universe dying due to anomallies being there.

I'm betting we may get a madame web/master weaver/ neli in the next movie to TRULY explain what's going on. In the comics any 3 of these characters guides the spiders Imo, I would've preferred for Miguel to be hunting miles due to these guys called "inheritors" being after him specifically for his totem essence. Explain it as miles being the type of Spider he is, able to use bioelectricity bolsters his essence, if they get him they could feast on him and grow much stronger, so Miguel seeks to kill/capture miles to stop their plan. I like where this story is going, but I just really want Spideys most dangerous villain family to make an animated appearance. They all have DRIP. Especially Karn and morlun

It's kinda funny that they call him filler because he's an anomaly. Every Spiderman has their own world even Spiderman 2099. So he's uncommon to them because he's not the original Spiderman of his universe. Though that doesn't make him filler in the comics, he's Peter's successor. Which is displayed in the Spiderman Through the Decades comic. I can see why in the movie they think he's an anomaly. Though would Peter B. Parker's daughter grow up to be in the same role as Miles. She's alive because of the extradimensional journey her Peter had which Miles had a direct influence on.

Yeah, that's because Parker is very poorly written by the dumb writers these movies have. And before anyone starts with the racist comments, I'll tell you that I love Miles and that he is the Spider-man of the new generation, loved it when he moved into the 616 after the new secret wars. I've read most of the important Spidey comics and I can say that Peter would never ignore his responsibility to sit around and have coffee citadel of Ricks style. He might join them for a mission if it's important, but other than that, he would be out there on the streets saving people, not visiting his psychologist. Like I said, Miles is great, a true continuation, but that doesn't mean we have to take away from the OG and write him poorly . Parker is being pushed back into the back lines, Marvel are even retiring the character, which is more than sad for people that grew up with him.

I think people get confused as to why Miguel dubbed Miles as an anomaly. Miguel dubbed Miles not because he replaced Parker. No, it was because the spider that bit him WAS NOT FROM HIS UNIVERSE. That event made him an anomaly that influenced the course of events that led Miles to the collider where Peter and the sinister 3 fought, and where Peter eventually died. There are many variant of Miles in the multiverse, and while some of them do became spider-man, there are some that DO NOT. Our Miles (1610) was destined to be a "DO NOT" Miles, a guy who's either gonna be a mundane citizen or a villain. While his counterpart (Miles 42), WAS DESTINED to became one (Spider-Man). Yet, our Miles (1610) due to multiverse shenanigans, became a spider-man instead. THIS IS WHY HE BECAME AN ANOMALY. THIS IS WHY HE IS CONSIDERED BY MIGUEL AS A THREAT.

One thing theyre doing with this plot point is breaking the trope that some characters dont need people to die to grow and become their true selfs and that to me is fucken awesome, most heros in any comic/series have someone important to them die and their death is a blast of nitro into a MC’s development, but in miles case its different, even when uncle aaron died he still didnt have full control over his powers, but when his dad gave him a loving speech, he flipped the script and knew exactly what to do from there, miles development and sheer power doesnt come from pain, it comes from love. And that is beautiful.

This is part of the reason why I LOVE this movie more than the first one, and I really love the first one, but also why I like this miles more than the comic version. Miles from a meta standpoint, sticks out like a sore thumb in the marvel universe. Marvel really doesn’t know how to write him(evidence by how they tried to have an entire spider verse Esque story but just having miles be different marvel heroes, but here..:they build on it. They give miles passions he loves, and for me, they have him ask something I think more spider-man writers need to ask themselves….does spider man need to be defined solely on tragedy? Miles lost his uncle for sure…but he still has both his parents, soemthing barely any spider man has. Peter lost his uncle, and Gwen…but for a short time, he was married, and in some of the most popular versions of the character, had a child that grew up to be an amazing person. Spider man doesn’t NEED to be based soley on tradgey.

Suffering isn’t heroic, but having a support group who are the people you love who you keep close to your heart, to draw strength from in times of need when you feel like you’re going to lose IS heroic. This is another reason why I love Miles Morales in both of the comics and The Spider-Verse films. He has both of his parents and he draws strength from both of them when times are tough for him as Miles and as Spider-Man and it really works and it’s so wholesome. But it also just goes to show how important having a good support group of people can be for one’s mental and emotional health. And for context on Miles becoming different Marvel heroes. That happened because the writer who was writing those stories seriously didn’t know how to write Miles as a character or as a person without using stereotypes. Overall it was a terrible decision to him in charge of writing those stories to begin with.

I feel like it would be redundant if Miles' fate was like every other Spiderman. Miles' isn't an anomaly, he's just different from them aka he's not one to fall in line and be a victim of his fate like every other destined spiderman has shown to be. I'm a big believer that the whole concept of destiny and fate is utter crap and I feel like by reinforcing Miles' story ending like every other spiders' they would be promoting a super authoritarian view of giving into your fate and never trying which is a bummer of an ending. Besides I feel like opportunity is what you make of it and be it an anomaly or not, Miles IS spiderman despite the fact that he wasn't supposed to be, and feel like Miguel is too emotionally repressed and too clouded by his own regrets (very generational trauma sort of thing) to actually have a fresh perspective. This is exactly why I believe political representation should include WAY more young people then there currently are but that's neither here nor there.

However, what happened to Miles in ITSV was not his choice, it was a direct effect of Kingpin's inability to accept that his family is dead because of him compared to Loki who used the tesseract as an escape since he was meant to be taken by the Avengers. After the Nexus Event, Loki became the center point of TVA and everything falls now under his hands despite Mobius being an actual member of the TVA. In season 2 trailer, he was experiencing "timeslip" which was weirdly similar to the glitch. It's just that it was about time and not cellular decay. I think the concerning part that can arise from Miles' situation is that they might uncover more cases like him because of Kingpin, the Collider and the Alchemax. Proving again that "He isn't the only one." despite being yet again showed as an outcast and worse, now a filler in the current movie. Would really love to see another Spiderman with this case in BTSV because it would be really epic. Being isolated/outcast and being told what to do is a consistent symbol in Miles' story and it's fascinating. I wonder how he will break that cycle in the next movie.
