0:52 Funny enough, while the X-Men: CoTA, MSH and X-Men vs. SF kept adding more frames of animation to each newly added character, the arcade versions of MSH vs. SF onwards actually dialed back on character animation to supposedly maintain performance and cut back on rom space. So, it's totally valid to say the early Marvel Fighting games look smoother than later entries.

That Psyloke Mirror Image move is like invisibility in a fighting game. It only benefits the the CPU opponent and is actually a flaw for human players.

Its not really a GD-ROM space issue on why MVC2 characters have way less animation. The issue actually stems way back to the CPS2 space limitations. By Marvel Super Heroes, the characters have so much animation frames they were starting to run out of ROM space. So in the VS games, they started to cut animation to fit more characters. Unfortunatelu by the time MVC2 came around although they have the space to fit, the issue became that the characters made in the VS series have anemic animation in comparison to the old ones they just stuck to the minimal animation in the VS series. Sentinel is another story though, the game would slow down so much if they did MVC2 Sentinel in XCOTA style, which is multiple sprites that animate in unison.

Funny enough in the comics particularly in the ones that came out in the 80s and early 90s Cyclops was revealed to not only be a very competent strategist and tactician on par with Captain America when it comes to tactical knowhow and ability he was also shown to be one of the top martial artists in the comics with his array of fighting styles he knew being boxing, kickboxing, jeet-kun-do, jujitsu, karate, savate, krav-maga along with mastering the art of blind-fighting. Sadly starting with the comics in the mid 90s his martial arts skills was replaced by him spamming optic blasts of various strength and size combined with his tactical knowhow.

If you need proof of what Max is saying about this game having more animation frames than MVC2, look at 6:37, Cyclop's Optic Blast. Cyclops have more hand movement and the blast itself has an ending animation where it shrinks. In MVC2, he jumps from the initial hand gesture to the blasting animation right away and the blast disappears without the shrinking.

It sucks that he's never been in a versus game, especially since he already has a sprite from the old x-men beat'em up game that the devs could have reused. COTA has some of the best Capcom arcade music of all time (Cyberbots as well) and it had so much personality!! Seeing pro combos in this game still blows my mind today. I'm so glad I got the PC port randomly from a friend a couple of years ago. I might have to run a VM to play it but I heard it was solid! Cyclops was so insane in EVERY game he was in!! Me and my brother just discovered an arcade today that has an X-Men cabinet and we played that for like three hours. This game's fun as heck and it's really cool to play the very first game in a series that would eventually lead to one of my favorite games ever, UMvC3 Also Nightcrawler is 100% my most wanted character for a potential new installment in MvC. From my understanding there are three different kinds of teleport in Marvel (Relative to oneself, relative to opponent, and relative to stage) and his specials could just be all the different types of teleportation with probably some attacks you can do out of them.

As I said in the previous video, that intro is godly. And regarding the X-Men to Rest of Marvel ratio, that's not gonna be nearly as big as it was in the 90's (especially in the Era of the Avengers). At best, in a roster of 25-30 Marvel characters, 4-6 mutants sounds about right.

As Max says, a quarter of the Marvel cast in a fighting game being X-Men is as it should be. Forget the past, forget the MCU making the Avengers popular. In terms of Marvel Comics representation in a fighting game, it evenly splits like this: Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, other. For the last part, unless they start using the weirder characters, like Man-Thing, Simon Garth, Machine Man or Devil Dinosaur. You quickly see a lot of: Wo/man with Gun/Sword. Which gets real samey, real fast.

1:39 - in regards to MVC2, the GDRom could handle WAY more data; the whole game is only like 130 something megs uncompressed. I would do alot of music changing and game editing back in the day and I remember the size of the game was so small, youd have to use a dummy file to push all the data out to the edge of the disc. They could fit way more on it, I'm pretty sure the cut frames of animation was due to some other constraint other than data storage

Cuts were probably made to make characters move faster. Children of the Atom has far more animations and is an overall slower game. Which goes against the rapid pace of the later Versus series.

I was super into the vs series but of course when you go to arcades and stuff as you'd always play x-men vs street fighter or MVC1. That's how I go into the series as a kid. In college I got back into it thanks to GGPO but I broke my old laptop and fell off it. This game is BONKERS lol these combos are nuts. I can see why people love this game so much.
