Thanks for watching! It's an underrated synth.
@justindpeak4 жыл бұрын
Great video. Just a couple of thoughts. I don't disagree that this might be geared or marketed for bass but it's not any more/less of a bass synth than an original Minimoog. I know there are less keys (non issue with a midi controller) and one less true oscillator than an original Minimoog, but you also have the sub osc as well as a dedicated LFO that doesnt require an oscillator like the OG minimoog. Also, the triangle wave IS soft but its also very soft on the Minimoog as well. I know it's subjective but I think it's great since a lot of the sounds of this synth can be harsh/aggressive. Overall I think the Sub Phatty is a pretty versatile mono synth and can do much more than just bass.
@MilesAwayOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Good analysis! I definitely agree with a lot of what you are saying. It's a huge advantage that the sub has a built in LFO, and doesn't have to sacrifice the 3rd Oscillator to get those kinds of sounds. Biggest difference between them I think is just the character of the oscillators. The Sub series of oscs are noticeably darker than the Mini. Even compared to my Matriarch, they are noticeably darker, which is why I felt like it was better for bass, but absolutely it's still a versatile monster! I've got a Sub 37 vs Sub Phatty video coming soon!

As long as it works it will always knock it out of the park. The subsequent 25 is Moog's stab for cash on the paraphonic ability that Novation was kind enough to give to their users of the bass station 2 as a firmware update. Moog could have done the same but clearly they wanted to cash out on it. Don't blame them given the used market really cuts out of them making more sales of new ones and it doesn't disappoint as I'm on my 2nd one as I totally regretted selling it. I doubt the 25 sounds any different than the original unless the wood side panels adding warmth is legit? Seems like prices used have gone up as it is a killer synth.

@ghost mall It did. It was a hidden egg in the original firmware. But they just didn’t implement it for the obvious reason of Sub 37 sales.

I’ve never played a Slim! But I value hands on workflow for hardware so I’d personally get the Sub Phatty, cause slim phatty has less controls right?

Great! I just love the sound of this synth. But.. Can you tell me why the sounds we make by using active panel (I mean the ones we build) aren't as "fat" (loud, rich) as the pre sets it brings with?
@MilesAwayOfficial3 жыл бұрын
it just takes time and practice! with moogs, make sure you have a good balance between resonance and drive (reso makes sound less bassy, drive can bring back the thickness), make sure you have a nice amount of osc 2 detune, and make sure you properly gain stage the mixer so that the sub osc can cut through
@zemarceloalencar67163 жыл бұрын
@@MilesAwayOfficial Thank you very much! I'll work with your tips. I really need to practice.
@ubiquitousreverser3 жыл бұрын
@@zemarceloalencar6716 Can't really say I've used the factory presets in a while, but one thing you can do is load one of them and then tweak the OSC's in the mixer section, the multidrive, and the master volume, and see where the factory presets are getting their 'loudness' from. I use the multidrive generally in about the 1st quarter range to amplify the OSC's before getting distortion coming in as I like to keep the mixer levels at the 12' o'clock so they aren't over driven out of the gate as I like to keep that cleaner, classic tone. But as you'll hear messing with the mixer level's it doesn't really get to hairy until you really get closer to it's max setting. Hopefully that can be of some help to you to get a better understanding of what's going on and what you may like regarding your taste in tone

The TR8S trigger out is wicked fun way to sequence riffs on a synth from the tr8s. I’m currently selling some gear to purchase a sub Phatty that is for sale locally so haven’t seen if/how it’s possible on this beast specifically, but it’s how I sequence my boutiques via the tr8s. You have a lead from trigger out on tr8s to trigger in or ext clk in on the boutiques. It might work via a gate in on sub Phatty but I dunno. You just load the notes in on your synth sequencer, n use the tr8s steps to input notes (obviously more than 16 steps using the a to h parts). To access it you press CC & RC together. Hope that sort of makes sense as I’m newb myself. It definitely works well and is easy with my 2 boutiques (sh01a and ju06a) You can set the assignable outs to be trigger outs also so you can do more than one synth with separate sequences at a time… If you’re still struggling with sequencing look into beatstep pro or keystep pro perhaps. Cheers

@@MilesAwayOfficial I still own the Sub Phatty but I'm going to replace it with a Pulse 2 in the next few months. I also own a DM12D that I'm going to replace with a DSI Rev2 16 voice at the same time. I tried to love my Sub Phatty but it was missing everything the Subsequent 37 had and without a good reason (I don't like the size and price of the Subsequent 37) !6 memory slots is disgraceful and the hidden functions are abominable. Also to add insult to injury Moog had promised to supply an updated firmware that would allow the Phatty to operate in a paraphonic mode. They recently decided not to issue the update and instead create a cash grab in the form of the Subsequent 25 (which is really just a Sub Phatty with the updated paraphonic firmware and a few extras thrown in) so I'm done with Moog.
