Not sure how I like Static's new origin, I just always thought him being involved with gang activity was a core concept of his origin. Think about it, smart kid who wants no trouble whatsoever but is targeted so bad he has to join a gang because the system has set his socioeconomic status to such a shitty standard that he has to. Just being a victim of police brutality...like it takes out the redemption Static feels he needs even though as readers we know he was only involved to save his own life. Static was a victim of society who didn't want to see people do what he almost did, now he's just a victim

@Miya Koh when I was a kid reading these comics and watching the show, I DID see him as a BLACK HERO because, that's what he was, and these comics were something people of color needed and something I waited for forever, there were and still are too few heroes of color in comic worlds, and it was an exciting time and important for me (and others like me) to see that not all heroes had to be white. As much as I love all the traditional heroes from the big 2, there was a point early on in my childhood where I stopped and thought, "hmmm, where are all the black, asian, etc. heroes??" So, it's important to see that he IS a black hero, it means something, and it is part of the reason why the Milestone crew went on this crusade.

Damn. The line between good stories with politics and overly political nonsense is very thin. Dwayne had the skills to pull that type of storytelling off but many others do not. I really hope they can straddle that line or this shit will get cancelled(actually cancelled, not twitter cancelled) real quick. Statics my fav hero so I'm rooting for the comic but this is a bad move on their part. Hopefully the movie will do it better since dc can't afford to lose money like that.
@NRG-REC4 жыл бұрын
@miles tom Not really. Changing it from a gang riot to a black lives matters protest is dumb as fuck. The original reason virgil became a hero is because gang members(people who were already hardcore criminals) gained superpowers in the same way he did and started terrorizing his city. He felt responsible to step up and stop them. This makes sense and shows how different he is from the gang members he fights. However in their attempt to make blm look good they're just gonna make it look very bad because now it's not criminal gang members gaining powers but instead peaceful protestors attacked by the police or whatever.....yet despite being peaceful before they gained powers they still somehow end up doing the exact same thing the gangs did.....which is terrorize the city. Therefore making blm protestors the bad guys he has to fight. Basically implying the blm movement is just as evil as criminal gangs. Or that if blm protestors gained powers they would use them to do crime instead of helping others like virgil does. Do you see my point now? I haven't read the issuse so maybe they handled it perfectly but like i said you can have a good story with political messages but most writers today are either too lazy or not skilled enough to bother and just slap messages into the story without thinking or caring about how it effects the narrative.
@NRG-REC3 жыл бұрын
@Xbox One My comment makes no sense to you because you didn't bother reading or even attempting to understand what I said. You only saw what you wanted to see and felt the need to come show me my place or whatever. I know this because you LITERALLY repeated what I said in your first line. Different words but the same damn meaning. I'll try and simplify it for you this time, hopefully you catch it. Politics is in everything but the line between GOOD STORYTELLING WITH POLITICAL LESSONS AND SHIT STORIES THAT ONLY SERVE AS POLITICAL VEHICLES IS VERY THIN. Dwayne mcduffie was a talented writer and through that he was able to write about gang violence, drug abuse, homelessness, racism and other heavy topics in a way that both adequately expressed the lesson he was trying to convey and also flowed well within the story he was trying to tell for the characters. Most writers these days cannot do that. They don't even try to anymore, it's too much work. They just say xyz is bad and you should feel bad. The message falls flat. Everyone already intellectually knows racism is bad but if you want to make people "feel" why it's horrific then you create a compelling journey for a character we can root for who is dealing with racism. Since you missed my 2nd point I'll break that one down too. The problem isn't that he went to a blm protest. The problem is that he and everyone else got their powers there and then, with the exception of him, suddenly started commiting violent crimes. There's an implication there that is very obvious to any black person with common sense and it's very negative. You might miss it so I'll tell you that one too. "Black people, who were peacefully protesting when given power, immediately became violent criminals who abuse their power over others" Get it now? It made sense in the original because they were already gang members hurting innocent people who then suddenly gained even more power but in the reboot these are supposed to be law abiding regular people, peacefully protesting injustice. Give them a scrap of power and all of a sudden they're terrorizing the city. If their goal was to show blm in a positive light, they did the opposite. It invalidates the very message the writers were trying to send. It's made even worse because from the preview I saw (and i may be wrong about this and hope I am) the only reason the cops fired at all is because virgil got pissed because hotstreak called frieda a slut or something and threw a punch which started a riot. So not only is he no longer an innocent kid in over his head trying to do the right thing from the original comic, he's now the hotheaded idiot who started the big bang in the first place and got countless people hurt and killed because his white bully called his friend a name. So now, he's going to be flying around beating up other black people due to something he caused. As a black man I'll tell you right now that's not even remotely a positive message to send to black kids and if you can't see that, then you're part of the problem.

Milestone is BACK!! I need to find out how to buy the comics ASAP to support the revival and hopeful it goes towards Milestone's own cinematic universe or at least tv verse.
@Blackstorm994 жыл бұрын
Love that they are doing reboot and I will absolutely support comic. Much like everyone else feel some kind of way about the updates but honestly as comic nerds we always feel that way when our favorite character has updates. Either the story and/or visual changes will be engaging and great and we Will forgive, or they are not and will set things back or update them again later. The point is to make sure they stay creative and boost their profile so that we see them in today’s movies, tv and animation so that the next generation can appreciate some of the greatest black superheroes ever made!!

First off, great video as always man! I’m not feeling Static’s origin, he went from a Bang Baby to a Protest Baby. I HATE the Duo concept they changed David Kim / Xombi TOO MUCH he was a amazing & fascinating character who didn’t need a overhaul. Lastly Icon’s new costume is weak his OG one is far better and it repped Pan-Africanism.
@Blackstorm994 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. same for Rocket outfit. It should be more respectable less skin showing.

Malik Bennett I see where you’re coming from but I think her costume is fine, although I do like her OG one too.
