The energy level on this gig was simply...GRUESOME!!! Hats off to Albert for "holding th' fort' on those blazing tempos, one after another! Yeah... that was the RIGHT VENUE for the athleticism of these cats delivering herculean musical momentum!!!

Thank you, Mr. Carter! Did you know Albert Stinson? His career was tragically short but his slim discography is very impressive.

Tony had Miles spitting notes out from weird angles and with a propulsion that carried Miles to a seat with Zeus looking in wonderment at these creations. This Band was simply another realized opportunity of what can happen when geniuses of united goals and vision understand their mission. This Band took no prisoners and keep at bay any impulses that would mitigate the integrity and purity of the creative act. The beauty was the unflinching loyalty of the Band members to one another and their reception of the beckoning to greatness. We use the term “genius” with reckless abandon and have no other adjectives when confronted with achievements of this level. We are given the opportunity to ride in the back of this space ship and listen and learn- what a gift!!!!!

i love it when Miles at the end of Dolores, seems to cut off the wild chase with an upper register flight and then goes directly into Round Midnight, with a Tony Williams cymbal crash.

@@aflessas probably my favorite bassist!! He went to my high school (john muir high in pasadena ca.) He was in my graduating class (1962) but i could'nt find him in my yearbook...he probably got called on a gig and said screw the picture..ha!..bobby hutcherson was three years ahead of me...i remember seeing stinson on the lincoln ave. bus when i was attending pasadena college. It must have been 90 degrees outside and albert is standing there in a heavy overcoat, his eyes all messed up probably higher than a kite and i thought i was so cool cause i knew who this famous person was and nobody else did..ha!... I have the vinyl copy of this and the sound is not the greatest but captures stinsons big sound fairly well!

To me albert stinson was at the top with lafaro, peacock, israels etc. His beautiful propulsive deep sound and vocal like technique were incredible..this recording though not the best at least you hear him. It would have been interesting to hear what miles thought. Stinsons recorded output was small. The recording with bobby hutcherson and herbie hancock from japan and his two albums with clare fischer and the live concert with john handy and hutcherson stand out. Hutcherson and Stinson both went to john muir high school in pasadena ca. as did i... Los angeles was a hotbed of talent at the time (early sixties)..charles lloyd, eric dolphy, stinson, chico hamilton, hutcherson, roy ayers, curtis amy, dennis budimer etc...It would have been great if stinson was still with us to hear what he would have done!!!..post script : he also did a great album with Joe Pass : Catch Me! on pacific jazz.

Those guys were awesome but Israels was quite mediocre. Ron [my teacher's teacher] was more subtle volume-wise on these live recordings which isn't bad, But it's nice to hear another great bassist with Miles. It's a damn shame Stinson didn't get more recognition. After you play with Miles you're name should be propelled into the limelight for a great career. Dang

this is great! I am, however, hard-pressed to find any Miles shows with Zawinul at keyboards...help me obi-wan, you're my only hope! ;)

Zawinul only played on studio sessions with Miles in 1968-70. I don't think he ever played with the live band- if he did there has never been any recordings in circulation. He does appear on a couple of tunes from one of Miles's last concerts in 1991. Best I can do, I'm afraid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXa9eIpqh5eggZo

What bassist wouldn't love to transcribe Stinson's lines here? But, he's so low in the mix, and with William's drumming . . . best to try Hutcherson's "Oblique."

Is the recording quality really this appalling??!!
@MilestonesArchive
@MilestonesArchive 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm afraid so. There are two sources for this date- this one comes from a broadcast on KALX-FM radio, probably from the late 1970s and it sounds like it's been through several generations of tape transfer. The other source is a soundboard recording which I have not been able to locate (so far), so I don't know about the quality of that one.
