LYRICS:
I woke up in Montecito
I was thinking about my life
And the questions made more questions
Staring out into the night
Yes, I’ve worn the golden g-string
Put my hand into hellfire
I did it all to make you love me and to feel alive
Oh, that’s just the world that we’re living in
The old boys hold all the cards
And they ain’t playing gin
You dare to call me crazy
Have you looked around this place?
I should walk away
Oh, I should walk away
But I think I’ll stay
There are layers to this body
Primal sex and primal shame
They told me I should cover it
So I went the other way
I was trying to own my power
Still I’m trying to work it out
And at least it gives the paper something they can write about
And oh, that’s just the world that we’re living in
The old boys hold all the cards
And they ain’t playing gin
And you dare to call me crazy
Have you looked around this place?
I should walk away
Oh, I should walk away
But I think I’ll stay
So the mad man’s in the big chair
And his heart’s an iron vault
He says if you can’t make ends meet, honey
It must be your fault
We all focus on the winners
And get blinded by their shine
Maybe caring for each other’s just too 1969
But oh, that’s just the world that we’re living in
The old boys hold all the cards
And they ain’t playing gin
And you dare to call me crazy
Have you looked around this place?
I should walk away
Oh, I should walk away
But I think I’ll stay
Yeah, I think I’ll stay
I can’t walk away

Golden G-string is, lyrically, the deepest song on the album and that’s so funny because the title is such a contrast. Ugh, her mind ✨

The interesting about this one is that throughout the rest of the album she talks about a broken relationship with another person, whereas this one is just about herself, how she is perceived, and how she has dealt with that. Great way to end this album. 👏👏👏

I feel like people are too quick to give out praises like “perfect” or “masterpiece” these days. The number of times I’ve seen those words attached to just pretty good tracks and albums is absurd. They should be saved for truly incredible songs. Then, when something like this comes out, it can get the recognition it deserves because this truly is a perfect masterpiece

Honest: I did not expect these lyrics from the song title, and I love that she did that. The juxtaposition of it was amazing. But more than that. This song isn't only about gender politics, it's about everyone's suffering under needing to "earn" a living, in a political and economic system designed the keep the old boys with the cards in charge, and everyone else failing, and feeling badly for it. This bit had me crying. "So the mad man's in the big chair And his heart's an iron vault He says "If you can't make ends meet, honey, it must be your fault" We all focus on the winners And get blinded by their shine Maybe caring for each other's just too 1969 [Chorus] But oh, that's just the world that we're livin' in The old boys hold all the cards and they ain't playin' gin And you dare to call me crazy, have you looked around this place? Especially now, during a pandemic that's wiped out safety &/ or finances for SO many folks doing the minimum- wage, no-benefits, full time jobs (that still barely cover rent and expenses, let alone a life). Or are too overwhelmed and living on assistance. Heaven forbid we balance the scales and be kinder to each other. Thanks Miley. This is beautiful.

The lyrics of this song are very deep and intelligent. She says that everyone considers her crazy but nobody pays attention to the crazy things that happen in the real world. The fact that the song is called Golden G String makes this clear. She only mentions it once but it is the only thing that remains for being "provocative", which many people think of her... And when she says "I'll think I'll stay" that can be in relation to when she said she was moving to Australia and she didn't move.

This song makes me cry because it’s so beautiful. Like, Miley has been through so much, (all 3 verses pretty much give an explanation of how she’s trying to change that women shouldn’t have specific do’s and don’t’s) and maybe (don’t quote me on this) she has even thought about quitting her career because of the heavy criticism (“I should walk away”), but she’s slowly learned and come to her own realization that the world is growing with future generations, so she’s gonna stay true to herself to make an impact. Like, you go Miley. Thank you for making me cry, and for this perfect masterpiece.
