Wish I knew somebody down in that area that goes to see these days that lots of aircraft fly into the canyon. One day I would like to drive down there to see this and take some pictures and video. How sweet it is!

We stopped off here on a road trip through Death Valley in November 2016 and I had no idea planes even did runs here. Parked at Father Crowley Overlook looking down this valley and then suddenly 2 x F-18s come buzzing through. Amazing!! Will definitely be making a point to stop off here again on my next trip :-)

Scott Brinker Id miss it2. Im from long island and the air base 150 miles south at A.C. is always a thrill. Staying high up at Ballys in a corner room facing the water i relax while watching fantastic aircraft

Rare, but very interesting, because a, dyed in the wool, railfanner, is out at one of most desolate, and moonscaped places on the earth; military aircraft spotting, and performing these duties quite well. I'm always amazed, that the U.S. Air Force still plans on incorporating those ancient B-52s' for many more years of service. They must be astronomically expensive to fly. And the engines, still in service for this aircraft, are truly inefficient compared to the modern day military power plants. Just for this note in passing. The engines used for the Boeing B-777-200 & 300 passenger jet; the GE-90 fan-jet. Each engine alone, produces more thrusted horsepower, than all eight of the B-52 engines put together.

Boeing just got a contract to replace those archaic 1960s-era engines with something from the 21st Century, allowing the Buff to fly on using much less fuel and saving billions over the expected life of the planes. They offered to do this 20 years ago, but were turned down.

Spencer, great stuff, definitely want to do this soon. I've been to Father Crowley a couple times and driven past probably 4 or 5 more times and never seen AC so timing seems important. Do you have a sense of the bast and worse times of the day and week to go there? I understand weekends and holidays are generally not too good and that makes sense, but is any day of the week preferred and what about time of day? I'd guess weather plays a role as well.

Pablo Hsu there was an incident at Whidbey Island NAS a few days ago with a Growler and all Super Hornets and Growlers are or were grounded in the Navy, not sure if or it has been lifted and since most of the traffic that comes through the canyon seem to be those aircraft, it would mean a lot less activity through here.

It's not that cut and dry. It's all in the cowboy driving that chuck wagon. While attending NSAWC I consistently went up against the Falcon and came up on top. But that was their job..........to lose. But we had the opportunity to "mix" it up and it was about equal in the win/loss ratio. We also had our fangs out against the red Hornets. Like I said earlier, depends on the "cowboy"!

William Castle When someone asks such a question the reasonable assumption should be that pilot skill is not a factor. In other words, pilot skills being equal, which aircraft would come out on top. It is a question regarding plane capability, not pilot capability.
