The year my dad retired, (1966), he took me into a mess hall at Sand Hill, Ft. Benning, Ga. for breakfast one Saturday morning. As a 6yr old kid, I thought I’d been given an early Xmas present to be able to eat with the troops that day. Anyone who wears the uniform has my respect. You are appreciated greatly by this citizen !!!!!

I served at Fort Campbell and Fort Bennington and I never had a bad meal. Anyone who says that food in the military is bad has never served in the military. When I left the 101st in 1987 I went to my mess hall and thanked all of the men and women who worked so hard at a thankless job for providing me with great food.

Exactly, my Brother. I was USAF from 1982-1987. We had really good, almost excellent, food the entire time. Granted, it was a bit monotomous, or "routine". But, yeah.... USAF food was actually almost excellent. I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10. On occasion, 9 out of 10. I will add... My buddies who went Army said their food was good, and plentiful. But, not really anything remarkable.

I was in the Air Force and was deployed during Desert Storm. I never realized that all the other branches were always saying the AF had the best food. I must admit we sure did. While the Army and Marines were out in the desert cruising around in tanks and the like, I was at a Saudi Air base enjoying all the amenities. From the great food, which included an ice cream machine like Dairy Queen, to the Olympic sized swimming pool and bowling alley we sure had it nice. And yes the food was awesome. No MRE's here. We had a couple of British army guys with us and they felt the same way about the food. They were constantly talking about how their food doesn't compare. That is the only thing I miss about the Air Force and the military in general.

In ‘68 on my second of three tours my mess section was in GP medium. They had a serving line on one end produced incredible meals. Years later I deployed to Belize on a engineer mission the mess section were the best in the Bn. They went as far as going into town and buying spices and things they weren’t supplied with. We took up giving them money for these supplies. In 26 1/2 years this was the only time I came back heavier tan I left!Army cooks get bad reviews, but over the years I found them to be great.

I was away from home on Christmas for the first time in my life in Dec 1979 at Ft Hood TX. Really a lot of the young soldiers like myself were away for the first time. Most of the ladies in our barracks walked over together for our Christmas meal. They fixed up the mess hall with all the cool Christmas decorations, lil' Christmas candies on the tables, cooks had on Christmas hats, had some Christmas music on and a really *GREAT* meal. I was away from home; but somehow being with my 'soldier' family made me feel like I was at home. Not gonna lie.....sometimes I miss those days.

There was breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight chow, and the 24-hour chicken shack where you could get a brown bag of fried chicken, french fries, biscuits or dinner rolls, soda. It's no wonder that I gained 30 lbs. I never had t-bone steak (thick and juicy ones) for breakfast until I was in the USAF. When I was first served t-bone steak for breakfast, I was worried because I was always told that's what they serve before they deploy you to a combat zone.

Good story, but I'll tell ya what .... if I had to eat PLAIN bologna sandwiches every day for the rest of my life so our men in uniform could have steak I would do it willingly and consider it a privilege to be given the opportunity. This might sound corny, but these people are the only thing defending my freedom and I don't take that lightly. Americans take their freedom for granted because that's the way it has always been. I know a former Russian citizen who became an American citizen and he said if it was up to him he'd make every American kid spend a year after graduating from high school in some 3rd world country rathole just so they would appreciate America. That former Russian is a better American than most that I know who were born here. Nothing is too good for the men and women in uniform as far as I'm concerned.

This does not come anywhere to comparing what most of you have written but i did spend many hours and 18 hour shifts in my states EOC for activations. Weather, drills, etc. and I can say that the food provided by the folk in the Army guard was just wonderful and there was always plenty of it. Hats off to the cooks at the O Club!!

I was at Ft. Belvoir VA for tech school in 1984 and after night class, we had the option to eat breakfast at the chow hall at midnight; I remember the Army specialists asking us if we wanted sausage, links or patties, bacon, wheat or white toast, and how did we want our eggs cooked. Some wanted their eggs sunny side up, some wanted theirs over easy, and some scrambled. As for myself, I always asked for mine poured into a cup......

My father was in WW2, he was in 88th division in Italy, when on the line sometimes the cook would make hot meal and bring it to the soldiers, a few times the Germans shoot at the cook. Also ocassionely the soldiers would shoot some stray animal ( usually a goat) and the cook would prepare it for the men, one the few times they got fresh meat while in combat.

Over 60 years ago I was a cooks helper in the Reserve, I was the first one in the kitchen and started the coffee and toast, then at meal time I prepared all of the produce used that day, I also made up the fruit juices and salad dressings, prepared the eggs for scrambling. we used a cook book that told you exactly what to do and how much food to prepare for different size groups and meals for 365 days, don't know what they did for a leap year. before preparing the first meal, the cooks officer inspected us for cleanliness, hands nails etc. We had to cooks or Chefs, 1st and second cooks they cooked the rest of the food not prepared by me. I really enjoyed that job but when I went into the Regular Army I became a Radio operator, they called us Sparkeys, that was even a better job.

I retired 15 months ago- My 28 year career spanned 42 years ( 15 yrs broken service) Waking up in a cold desert in California and smelling that damned bacon cooking in a mess tent was INCREDIBLE!!! Real scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns in a mess kit was fantastic, More recently, going to a chowhall in S Korea on the DMZ and eating this damned rehydrated food was terrible. It gave you this case of cramp farts so you would just eat the fruit and packaged sugar food ( poptarts, muffins etc) In Afghanistan , we had these heat tables with about 12 inches of boiling water with foil wrapped food that was incredible, Burritos, tacos , chicken legs from nuclear chickens and the sugar food
