Speaking as a civilian who's had a few MREs in my day on camping trips, some sides are better than others. Peanut butter on crackers, or preferably bread, is a great way to get some quick energy on a hike. Even better if you have some jelly to slap on top as the crackers and bread tend to be pretty dry. As for the honey mustard pretzels, I prefer those over the ones you find at say a gas station merely because they are more "airy" and way easier to eat without feeling like you are going to split all your teeth open! The ration heaters in my experience are very hit-and-miss but I would get my MREs as surplus so who knows how long they sat before I got it. I always save the spares from one MRE for use at a later date. Some hot sauce and jalapeno cheese spread really added some flavor to a bland chili-mac backpacking meal on a trip once.
