There are also benefits you can gain from the service. If you serve as truck driver you get truck driving licence and working permit for free to drive in civilian world. People like me who drove the big rigs with trailers got somewhere around 15k worth of permits and licences for free. Only "downside" is to serve full year. Best year in my life. 1/21 BECE

@@mandelin0 Things might have changed, but I seem to remember that if you somehow manage to get yourself into the pilot training, you got to sing papers to be in the military for some time and in the process you get pilots training and licensing so you can go and study a bit more to make a career out of that in civilian world afterwards. If I remember right, non insignificant percentage of Finnair pilots can fly fighter jets.

There is no need to speculate about the size of Finnish Army - it is around 280,000 soldiers. That is the amount of people that would be initially mobilized in case of war and it would happen quickly. This is usually referred as the wartime strength. However the total amount of people with military training between ages 18 - 50 is around 900,000. Think of it as kind of reserve pool that can be used to replenish losses or form new units after some refreshing if need be. It is not possible to mobilize those 900,000 at once because the society has to keep functioning somehow even during a war. For example during the Continuation War the peak strength was around 700,000 soldiers and the average around 450,000.
@KoteDarasuum
@KoteDarasuum 2 жыл бұрын
Around continuation war Finland only had 3.5 million people so in modern Finland of 5 and half million people we could easily have military more than what our ww2 war time strenght was. Only issue would be equipment, but thats what the old Chinee and DDR AK's are for, to equip the 2nd and 3rd grade reserves
@Resident-cb3yz
@Resident-cb3yz 2 жыл бұрын
More than million soldiers if needed. At age of 43 i am on reserve before my dad :D Old men will go to war too in Finland. Lots of places to defend and oldies can make suprise attacks. There are military bunkers that have guns, explosives and all kind of gear literally in every city.
@RealChiku
@RealChiku 2 жыл бұрын
Take note that back then, Finland had a population of 3.9 million. And now, that finland has more equipment (new equipment can arm the 280000 soldiers.) in desperate defensive measures, we have a stockade of WW2 era rifles, the old KPs, and old RK's, along with the old artillery being stored in longtime storage. In desperate defense, we can arm up to 800000 soldiers simultaneously, because we have, just working assault rifles, for almost 600000 people (The foreign supply stored, we have about 20k RK95's for special forces, 350000 RK62s, 100000 RK 72's bought from Germany in the cold war era, 100000 Type 62 chinese AK rifles, and also, unspecified amount of AK47's) and few thousand different foreign bought rifles. Depending on the amount of AK's bought in the 50's and 60's, which there could be, potentially, about 100000 of them) we could arm majority of the reserve army instantaneously with automatic rifles. To add to this, we also have hundred's of thousands of different specialized guns (Machine guns, marksman rifles, sniper rifles, etc) to arm specialists with. Not to count local militias that would be formed and supplied by the army with even older guns like Mosin Nagants, etc rifles that are still in long term storage. To add to this, we have over 80000 infantry carried anti tank weapons, while for example, russia has around 3000 tanks, so we could even arm one in every three soldiers in the first response, with anti tank weapons.

Assuming that you live in another country and work there you are not mandated to take part as long as you don't move to Finland too young. If you move to Finland you can be called into service up to 30 years old. After that you will not be conscripted. So assuming you wan't to grow and live in your current country and would like dual nationality, there is really nothing stopping you on that front. And if at some point you wanna move to Finland, as long as you are past 30, you don't have to serve.

An Australian-born cousin of mine served in the Finnish military. He could've gotten a deferment, but he opted for a six-month "holiday" in his ancestral lands. My father told me a military story. Apparently he and his friend were overseeing a fitness test and decided to give an overweight guy a slightly higher score than usual. As a result, he was chosen to run communication cables between the radio stations in the battlefield. All he had to say was "thanks a lot, guys." Needless to say, at the end of his service he was a lot skinnier and in a fit condition. Strangely enough, I think he actually thanked my dad and his friend in the end.

I want to point out, conscripts do get to touch a fighter jet, and quite a bit. You have to apply to be an "apumekaanikko" thru special forces application. This way after youve done your basic and nco training in tikkakoski, you will move to another location, most go to rovaniemi or karjalan lennosto. These conscripts will perform daily checks on the airplane and are a vital part of the ground crew of eatch fighter jet.

Sweden has some 900,000 conscripts trained between 1980 and 2020. 20k in the regular armed forces and 20k in the Homeguard (possibly could double in number by next year). The real difference is repitition training, but Sweden is slowly getting that started and calling in people who have done conscription in the last 10 years to retrain.

How do you think Finland gets their 900,000 😂 Its the same thing. We've roughly got conscripts 100,000 since the year 2000. 300,000 when you add the conscripts from the 90s. That's how you get these large numbers. The real difference is that we stopped with repitition training. But like I said, conscripts from 2010 and onward are being called to do repitition exercises now. So while things are moving slowly, they are at the same time picking up pace

For clarification, your physical and mental health is considered prior and during your service. The prior health check also gives you a "fit to serve" classification, which ranges from A to T. A being fully fit to serve, B being restricted to light roles due to health problems, like having knee problems, surgical problems or being obese etc. C being unfit to serve during peace time, usually due to major health risks/problems, like a condition of weak joints, degrading hearing, extreme obesity etc. E being unfit to serve at this time, like prior to a surgery, major family related issues or anything that really needs to be treated/handled before entering service, but you have already been given a conscription order. Usually moves your start date by a year. T being unfit to serve due to major mental health problems. You'll propably lose your drivers license if you recieve a T classification. All of the above can be also given during service, if something happens. I was almost given a C two weeks before my service was done for having such bad eyesight, had to really contest the staff that I'm good, just let me be.

I got an average of about 3 hours of sleep per day during exercises in the woods (or whatever its called) lasting about a week. Once I came to the tent to find out that it was basically full (I could have woken people up and asked them to move), so I was just like whatever and slept under a tree instead for a whopping 1,5 hours that night. Yeah imagine the stupid things that happen when everyone are so tired and exhausted all the time during these exercises. That is how stories are made.

I don't think we yell "laukaus" or "sarja" anymore. :D At least in my time 15 years ago we had plenty of blanks. Which I hated. Those things would foul any gun after a few rounds. I was a gunner in CV9030 and we had to use blanks in our mg as well. You wouldn't believe what kind of a mess 500 blanks would leave inside a PKT. In one practise all gunners made a secret pact that we wouldn't fire a single round. Our trainers weren't happy with that, but they didn't have to spent two hours cleaning tthe damn mgs after the day. Now I've decided that that kind of "sykkiminen" and "tetsaus" is a young man's game so I'm a proud C-man (relieved from duty during peace time for medical reasons).

Not really. It was worse in the 60's or something but nothing even close to Full Metal Jacket or something. I was in the army in the 90s and the worst punishment we could be issued was blowing up our bunks, which basically means that a corporal was not happy with the way my bed was made and threw the mattress and the bed sheets on the floor. No physical violence or anything like that. Nowadays it's illegal to blow up the bunks.

Not really on a broad scale, however there are instances of missuse of power in a way of fucking a bit with people. when an 18 gets some military rank power over other 18 year olds. Allso the Finnishswede minority consisting of around 300 000 people have the right to go to a swedish speaking base in finland ("nylands brigad" which is fully operated by the Finnish military" . However if they choose to go to a finnish speaking base it is quite common to be picked on and "bullied" to some extent due to them being finnish swedes.

Severe cases very really rare already in the 1980's when I was there. I never witnessed a single case. What did happen frequently was that when you got the power, you would order the formation heading for lunch to run and hide in the snow to avoid an air raid, but that was valid training...almost. It was never against individual soldiers and usually we took it as a joke, something to break rather boring days with some extra action. Very good memories; I was from an inland town and had the chance to spend the time in the wonderful archipelago of the Gulf of Finland. There was also a very good spirit in the unit; quite a lot of competition but in the friendly sense.

Actually it is 280 000 "at the field, in full action", and Finland has to top of that reserve of 900 000 ~ from which that 280 000 is packing up / filling that number back, if and when needed. Dunno if Finland has capability to bend that 280 000 to bigger numbers, if needed, with reserves, what comes to gear etc. 🙃280 000 is still kinda big for a country of 5 million. Nowdays many countries, as Finland, has made their army less personnel, but in better gear and more active training.

As much as we conscripts like to meme around, in a real not I think our conscripts are really well trained and effective. Like we tend to compare ourselves to the hollywood propaganda of American military propaganda movies. But like compared to the real actual capability of say, the Russian army.. our conscripts are better trained than the average Russian professional soldier. This is because I can confirm, the money and time for training IS ACTUALLY SPENT ON TRAINING. In the year I spent in the military, we were doing actual training drills or theory lectures over half of the hours we spent awake. Not like practicing to march in perfect formation as machines, like the Russians do to impress their fascist supporters. We actually spent that time firing live ammunition, firing blanks, being instructed and watched over by the best trainers. We put up our tents and dig our trenches countless times to do it in the required time limits every time. We train for camouflaging our positions with inspecting officers grading us. We train for basic things like how to actually wear and take care of the proper clothing to not get frostbite in the winter. And our equipment is tightly taken care of, there is no room for soldiers to steal equipment like in the Russian army. Everything is counted for, and if you lose something you pay for it. And in addition, if you lose something you get so much shit for it. So I knew many people who lost their equipment and bought a premium variant from Varusteleka store to return instead, just so they wouldn't get the harsh punishments for like losing their fork spoon or ration container thingy. And to stay competitive, the Finnish army takes part in international exercises on Finnish training grounds. NATO and Nordic countries are invited to send their soldiers to have wargames with us. So our conscripts actually engage in simulated combat against American, German, Norwegian, Swedish, UK, and Baltic professional soldiers. It keeps the standards in check. And then you have to take into account, that our higher officers are vigorously trained and positions aren't sold off like in Russia and China. The officers are actual gods of war that have spent thousands and thousands of hours studying and practicing leading, strategy and tactics. The lower ranks have big respect for their higher up officers and generals. They aren't seen as corrupt fat thieves.
