A big part of my childhood was enjoying military roleplay and simulation games from the big contenders for the times which were"
Mircoprose
Novalogic
Janes
These three games manufacturers helped define the interest and love for military hardware and equipment and it gave me goosebumps on the back of my neck as a young boy playing these games. Not only enjoying them for fun, but learning about how weapons, aircraft, ships and tanks worked. The games taught me a lot and allowed me to join the army with a keen interest in guns. I saw a F-22 fly when I was a young kid with my dad at the Duxford airshow (I think it was there) and loved knowing I could see the jet I watched fly in the game by Novalogic. But what really defined my love for tanks was Armored Fist 2 and 3! What incredible games for their time. R.I.P Novalogic! you are missed.
Ironically Microprose is coming back into the forefront again which is nice to see!
Enjoy the games! Let me know if you played any of them back in the day!
Hope you enjoy!!

The Delta Force 2 intro is always going to be my favourite. It doesn't have too much to do with the game itself, but it was still the first ever military game I played that got me hooked onto the series which led to the Arma series.

Oh, the nostalgia! All those video game series like Rainbow Six, Comanche, Silent Hunter, F-22 Lightning II, Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon, and even Splinter Cell. Those 90s to early-2000s games similarly defined my passion for things military and military history. Of course, they all look very simplistic nowadays, but our kid brains thought it was all special operations, dogfights, tank battles, submarine warfare, and high speed, low drag, stuff. Then you grow up...and some realize that it's not about the cool stuff you see in movies or video games, but there's something higher than yourself to be served. Service comes in many forms (not all of them military), but we're indebted to those who put others before themselves.

This brought a smile to my now grey-bearded face. Played so many of those. Stand out memories for me were Jane's F-15, Israeli Air Force, USNF 97, Jane's 688i and Sub Command, European Air War, il-2, Rogue Spear, OG Ghost Recon, SWAT 3, Silent Hunter, commandos... I could go on... I still never forget the first time I saw the box for Jane's Longbow in a store and realised you could actually play a game where you could fly these birds, blew my mind, but didn't get a PC for another three long long years...

I adore that this vid is just a comp of intros/trailers for great games of the time. super stoked to see R6 Rogue Spear on the list. that game alongside Urban Operations and eventually even the console based R6 Lockdown solidified my adoration for Tac/Milsim shooters and even inspired projects in the work god damn i miss the Original Rainbow Six. i was lucky enough to find install files online and through some know-how, get it running (almost) perfectly and the sheer nostalgia wave is overwhelming. the Museum rescue, the oil ship, just perfect

I'm Gen Z, so I missed that first golden age of military simulation. Thankfully though, it seems the genre is heading into a second golden age in the 2020s, with many games of the 90s and 00s getting or set to get a reboot/sequel/spiritual successor.

The finest military game I ever played was something called Natural Selection 2, a futuristic FPS. Now about 10 years old. It was really 2 games in one: you could play the FPS side as a soldier or an alien. The objective of the game was to seize and hold territory. The other half of the game was playing as commander. You had a top down perspective and had to devise strategies, coordinate plans and react to events IN REAL TIME. Communication was vital for success. It's one of the few games where you could experience the "commander's crisis" - when the whole team is looking at you for leadership and orders. This is what I meant by the "commander's crisis" kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXrUgWisnZZomdE

My inspiration for wanting to join the army was a North Korean cartoon called "Squirrel And Hedgehog", which is a more violent furry animal version of GI Joe. I chickened out at the last minute, because I didn't want to live far from home nor wake up at 4 in the morning every day. That, and my grandpa was in the Chinese navy and my cousin in the Chinese PLA and I wanted to follow their footsteps at first

Didn't own a PC in the 90's so didn't get to play sims much really, Played Rainbow Six on PlayStation and bunch of other stuff but nothing listed here but cool nice to see you have a bit of nostalgia for that time if nothing else. Personally I like to pretend like the 90's was a figment of my imagination but that's me.

I've played some of these games. And some I cannot play because they were not available in my city/country, or my PC lack the capability to play them. My 1995's NEC Powermate computer was running on Windows 3.1.1 with 486 processor, not even a Pentium 1 processor. Hearing their themes sure bring back nostalgia. Too bad I didn't see any SSI brand games in the video. I've played a lot of their games, like Panzer General, Allies General, Fantasy General, Steel Panther series and Silent Hunter.

I never joined but loved Falcon 4.0 Delta force 2 Top gun fire at will Desert and jungle strike (Amiga I think) Rainbow 6: rogue spear Jane's fleet command The Falcon game I'd spent most of my childhood on. Wasn't a healthy kid and spent a lot of time inside - this game kept me from boredom 🤣 Edit, I commented before finishing the video and pleased to see some of my favourites in there! Game devs don't probably realise the reach of their work and how it's left an indelible positive mark on a generation.
