I am surprised, as an American, to see us in the top 5 or 6 from 1830 to the Civil War, and then up until the 1890s. Especially after the civil war the US had a wooden navy which was more and more of a joke. Also, during this time, the US seemed to think a large standing army was bad for our freedoms. I can see the increase in the 1890s in that we started building a world class navy AND the Spanish American war.

Imagine how much better the world would be if even 10% of money directed towards military went instead to helping out citizens of the world, putting that money into education, clean water, ensuring people don't go hungry and have a roof over their heads.

The Apollo program in American cost about $70 billion in today's dollars over a 10 year period of time. Can you imagine how cluttered up space around the solar system would be if the money spent for defense was used to get us into space?
