This video will compare the top 10 countries by gross domestic product. Gross domestic product, or GDP, is the monetary measure of the market value of all the final goods and services produced in a specific time period by countries. It is calculated using the formula: GDP = Consumption + Investment + Government Investment + (Exports - Imports). This is the first iteration of the historical GDP series on this channel. I wanted to create a video that compared the top historical countries by GDP. Other videos on KZbin use modern borders for the entirety of the comparison, which is not historically accurate. But this video uses the historical empires (Mughal Empire, Qing Dynasty, Prussia, Empire of Japan, etc.) which makes it the most accurate. However, since this comparison goes back so far into the past, the numbers should only be take as an estimate as most historians don't even agree on a specific number.
*Update: Here is a more updated and accurate version of a GDP video:
• Top 10 Countries by GD...
**I am the only person doing the animations, coding, and music/video editing, and I do not have a team of editors doing any work for me. On average, a video project takes me about a month to complete, but usually it takes much longer. This video in particular took me three months to complete since it goes back four centuries.
***My videos are created using a 5 step process:
The first step is finding the inspiration for an idea. This could come from current events, suggestions from viewers, or interesting data that I self curated.
The second step is the research. Before creating a topic for a video, research needs to be done to understand the topic in full, and why the numbers are what they are.
The third step is data collecting. I’ll research through historical texts, articles, and organization websites to create a dataset on the topic.
The fourth step is to animate the dataset. I use a variety of animation and coding softwares, such as Flourish, Power Bi, Excel 3D, Adobe After effects, Motion, and more.
The fifth and final step is to export the animation over to Final Cut Pro to cut, edit, and enliven the overall project. I’ll add images, additional information, and after effects to turn what was once a dataset of numbers into a colorful project.

It's a bit of a misconception to say that Britain 'destroyed' India's wealth. In reality it's just that the UK economy (and the economy of Europe in general) grew much faster than the Indian one so, by the time of Indian independence, Indian GDP made up a much smaller percentage of the global total. As seen in these graphs, Indian GDP never actually fell during British rule. Also worth noting that while the Mughal economy was much larger than the British one in the 18th century, it was only because it had an absolutely massive population. On a per capita basis, the British economy was much richer from the outset.

GDP is a tricky number. It's like in the US a cup of coffee is 4$ and the country has the capacity to produce 6trillion cups. In china it's 2$ and they can make 10 trillion cups. If you just look at gdp it looks like 24 vs 20 trillion USD and the US is ahead of 4 trillion worth of coffee, but they are actually behind 4 trillion cups. In purchasing power China overtook the US in 2014. It isn't just about coffee, but it means China can build more roads, more schools, more hospitals, more railways more weapons more everything.

@Aarav :0 Lahore was only the capital for about 13 years. Fatehpur Sikri in India was the capital for 14 years, Agra was the capital for 80 years and Delhi (Dilapanah and Shahjahanabad) was capital for 124 years. Delhi and Uttar Pradesh was definitely the core region of their empire, just like Bihar was the core region for the Guptas and Mauryans, and Maharahstra was the core for the Marathas. Majority of their monuments were built in this region.

@Aarav :0 its interesting to know that according to British censuses, Punjab did not become Muslim majority until between the 1800 and 1900s. Before Sikhs and Hindus combined were a larger group than Muslims in Punjab. The only regions of India that were Muslim majority during Mughal times were Sindh, Kashmir and East Bengal (Bangladesh), none of which were core territories of the Empire. Kashmir became Muslim majority during the Kahsmir Sultanate, East Bengal under Bengal Sultanate and Sindh during the Arab caliphate. Punjab was not Muslim majority.

There's a 0% chance that tiny east coast america with 2.7 million people had the GDP of 27 million population Tokugawa Japan before the industrial revolution even kicked in to make such differences even possible. @RhodesianSAS1994 not really tbh, the fact that the UK was able to industrialize quickly and raise their GDP per capita was by dismantling the handmade cloth production industry of India and forcing indians to buy their British manufactured goods, made from Indian raw product. Of course there are multiple reasons for this, but what I stated was I'd say one of the primary ones. And with the arrival of the British came the downfall of the Mughal empire, which had historically always had contributed a huge chunk to the global GDP.

For example you guys cornered the TV market a few decades ago, nowadays South Korea has the cutting edge technology in displays that you guys don't. You guys also didn't invest in semiconductors like maniacs as the Koreans did. Also of course South Korea had Japan as a role model while they were still a developing country so it's no real surprise that the two countries share similar industries. @@pletskoo514 population is important but efficiency matters the most, the US economy is the most efficient in the world. The average US worker produces 6 times more wealth than the average worker from China. And China’s population will decline to 800 million by the year 2100 whereas the US population will increase to 550 million by 2021. And China will still be less efficient than the US, with much more of their population being older and a burden on China’s economy. They are having a demographic crisis. India on the other hand has way too much corruption. It’s systemic from the very bottom to the very top. They’re economy grows because they have a huge consumer base and import a lot of stuff.
