Fantastic video Military Events, thank you very much for all the hard work you've put into this channel this year! The marches are: Sarafand Bravura* Wassail (The Yuletide March) Wassail (The Yuletide March) Sarafand Bravura Rising of the Lark *one of my favourite marches! Loved the close ups of the Snare Drummer on the return march, sounds like the band have had a new snare, it's so much more crisp! Did you use a new camera on this, the quality is amazing?

Am I mistaken or do they have an oboe and a bassoon player? Is this typical? As where I'm from oboe and bassoon are rarely included in marching bands of any type due to their delicacy, and even the British coldstream guards seem to exclude these instruments.
@CarzorStelatis5 жыл бұрын
This band is normally mounted on horseback (using them on foot for changing the guard is a relatively recent thing), so some of their instruments are different from the infantry bands.
@MilitaryBandsEverywhere5 жыл бұрын
@@CarzorStelatis Before the band of the Household Cavalry and they were the Band of the Life Guards and Blues and Royals having only just amalgamated in September 2014, before this they used to combine annually to parade mounted, but before used to regularly perform on foot, in concert and for the changing of the guard, so it is no recent thing for them. The instrumentation for every wind band in the Corps of Army Music is the same (there are brass bands and a string orchestra also). It is purely based on the instrumentation of the music they are playing, on the march and during the inspection, as to what instruments will make it onto the march and the Director of Music/Bandmaster's preference. For example, in many bands, an oboe isnt practical on the march and isnt needed, so in many army bands the Double Reed players will play cymbals of will join another section such as clarinet or piccolo. In this instance, the Household cavalry wanted the sound of a double reeds in the band. Marching with an oboe has proved a challenge as the bobbing motion of marching and the delicate vibractions used to create the sound are a challenge to achieve together. I hope this answers your question, it is purely based on the DOM or BM and their preference in the music they are playing, you will often find them on parade or the musicians but on different instruments. Another point is that, the band wouldn't have taken this from "previously being a mounted band, of which they were not" as double reed instruments are never played mounted with in the band, the bands instrumentation actually does differ slightly as of the limitations, for example, the French Horn players (in the key of F) change to the Tenor Horn (Eb) when mounted and marching percussion changes to two kettle drums (rather than timpani also).

The 2 lance corporals at the back in front of the Sergeant major and he calls out “MOUNT THE ESCORT” which means the 2 lance corporals from the back go onto ‘port arms’ and run to the officer leading the guards and march by the side of him, and when they get to windsor castle the Sergeant Major says “IN THE ESCORT!” So the 2 lance corporals go to one Side and mark time and then march back in line in front of the sergeant major.
