Maybe a rather irrelevant question, but it has to do with the AP and HE markings. Could this be because of it being a paratrooper / highly deployable kit with a unit that would rely on re-supply from other units after deployment? As Germany is part of NATO it may be a way of having ease of communication across nationalities?

It's an ideal motorised infantry hunter. It sounds like a civilian car, has a profile smaller than most vans, can drive in places you'd think impossible, and brings an auto-cannon to eat APC's and IFV's for breakfast. A modernised one with computer assisted targetting and better optics is still an exceptionally viable vehicle. Frankly I would honestly say this is more viable on a modern battlefield than most MBT's if it wasn't for the fact that its armour can be defeated by most light vehicle mounted weaponry. It is the perfect definition of a glass cannon.

Really a small and capable fighting machine. You could read the "AP" as "Anti Panzer(ung)". Some friends of mine from the Fallshirmjäger love to tell me the story, when a few years ago two Wiesel 1 TOW stopped a french tank attack during an exercise. The Wiesel stayed behind a building and only one of them drove out of cover, "fired" it´s rocket and retreatet back into cover, so the next could fire. Thy wiped out some tanks before the referee "killed" one of the Wiesel, so the exercise wouldn´t be pointless.

As a former Forward observer, I agree. The gear on the Recon variant would be well suited for directing artillery or air. But due to the compact nature, it's probably not a vehicle I would have liked living out of in Afghanistan, or a traditional war in Europe for that matter. And I would have missed my 50.cal on our Danish M113. Self defense is key, especially when operating alone, or in a small unit.

I see the unit for ground pressure is written as N/cm3, but I guess it should be N/cm2? If it is, that would be a ground pressure of 36 kPa, which is a very impressive number, with a normal car having around 200 kPa, the M1 Abrams having 103 kPa, and a normal adult man having about 50 kPa of pressure. Very interesting video!

@Military History Visualized Above the horizontal control is not an indicator to see how much ammunition is left. With this you can set the distance you either lasered or manually figured out. Since AP and HE have different ballistic features there needs to be these two so you can adjust the distance individually. No current Modell of the Wiesel has an indicator for how much ammo you have left. Usually you have to count yourself or quick-check by looking at the "flexible Gurtkanäle"

This was a cool video. For me, the Wiesel name caught my eye, back in the mid 1960's I rode a school bus from our small village out to a rural schoolhouse in North Dakota. One of the last stops was at a small farm a few miles from the school. The owner of the farm had a snow plane and a Wiesel tracked vehicle. Since the snow in the Dakota's can be treacherous from time to time, that farmer was a God Send to the local population when it became necessary to transport an injured person or pregnant lady to hospital, and his units often became the rescuer for those who were not wise enough to stay home when the snow began to blow across the prairie of the Dakota's. He saved dozens of lives with his units, in fact there is a memorial in place at a local museum for his rigs and the owner. I knew his children very well, sadly they have all passed on now, this does make me a bit sad, but I am an old man now and many of my closest friends and family have passed on.

This little dude is so cool. I generally prefer wheels over tracks, but this is possibly one of the few cases where tracks are useful for their compactness and no need for elaborate steering and suspension parts. The fuel efficiency and firepower/mobility per transportation effort are also really great. Basically, this is like an M2 Bradly, but instead of being a lumbering coffin for the infantry inside, the tankette itself is pretty much an infantry team. Ton for ton, and man for man, these little guys have much more firepower than the Bradley, which is already very formidable.
