Depends, some boats only go underway for short stints some for months, smaller cutters have wifi i think the small boats under that dont. Being a BM depends on ur unit cause u can be a BM on a land unit or like be a BM at an ANT or smallboat station and be a coxsain(drives the boats) so its really depends

@military journeymen. Would you recommend to someone that wants to go in the future to Cyber Security to do IT before Cyber Security? and if Yes, what part of IT would contribute to Cyber Security? Or better just go directly to cyber security without any previous experience in IT at Coast Guard?

IT is a good path to cyber but not necessary.

IT you will be working in a more diverse range of places, all over the USA, in and out of the office environment. IS you may be confined more to certain geographical areas such as Maryland and DC and you may also be required to work in secret rooms often without personal communication devices such as your cell phone.

How long are coast guard deployments? Are reservist considered veterans after they retire from 20 years?

reservists would need 40 years technically, however if you've been active duty the time does play a factor I believe.

"IT is the future." And yet coast guard IT is 15+ years behind anything in the private sector. If the Coast Guard put more money into IT, made things more modern and user friendly then they could get rid of most of the YNs and SKs. A well written computer program could do most of the office work that support rates make BMs and MKs do anyways.

Yea pretty much, i was thinkn of IT before i joined and now seeing the technological infrastructure i see that theres no way any of that can translate to the private sector, youd have to do alot of outside studying on ur own for that and maybe use TA or GI bill for top level certs to make yourself valuable upon getting out. But a clearance (secret or top secret preferably) is a hell of an asset to have.

Would you recommend Air Force then? Air Force is known for being competitive and state of the art right?

@@Joe-of1ob I honestly don't know much about the IT in the air force. But I wouldn't expect any government bureaucracy to be cutting state of the art or user friendly. It might be expensive and secure but the programing and interface is usually lacking. It would be a good career for sure but you'd have to ask someone in the air force if it would actually translate I to a civilian IT career after the military.

IT in reserves just come in on normal reserve schedule and typically work at a local ESD. Same job just part time.
