The German government authorized Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to transfer 50 Flakpanzer Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles to Ukraine on April 26, 2022, and the first three Gepards arrived in Ukraine on July 25, 2022. A test revealed that a supply of Norwegian-made ammunition could not be fired by the Gepard, with a subsequent test of improved ammunition scheduled for August 2022. Thirty Gepards and 6,000 rounds had been delivered by September 20, 2022. Ukraine's Armed Forces had received approximately 50,000 Norwegian-made rounds for the Gepard in September 26, 2022. According to the report, the operational use of Gepard during Russia's invasion of Ukraine revealed that it is extremely effective against drones. Germany, Brazil, Chile, Jordan, Romania, and the Netherlands are currently using this anti-aircraft weapon.
In short, the Gepard, with twin Oerlikon 35 mm guns mounted on a Leopard 1 chassis, is a highly effective air defense system with greater mobility than others of its type. Because it is self-propelled and carries its own radars, the Gepard can operate as a standalone air defense unit as well as part of a larger coordinated effort. Despite its age, the upgraded Gepard 1A2 variant can still operate successfully in a modern threat environment.
