I've found that for straining paint, a scrap of non-metal window screen works great. Like your videos, narration and mannerisms. Thumbs up

Dale, that's a good idea and material that I have on hand from screen repair. The filter is too fine, screen would be much better. Thanks.

Finish looks great. Nice tip about the milk paint and Watco over coat. A month is too long to wait for the next episode. Bring it on; anxious to see the final piece.

thanks for work. I wanted to learn if I can use Danish oil on top of painted surface. Now I know I can. Greetings from north California in mid of Corona and protest.

Your table looks great! I love the Danish oil on top. I used that same milk paint recently, but had a distressed look to it. I used a dark brown milk paint as the base layer, and then a light blue on top. Once I sanded it down I couldn't believe how great it looked, and even more how great the texture was. I urge you to try it sometime

Just getting ready to use the milk paint much as you did on a cabinet project for my wife to use in her jewelry hobby. I was told that adding Carnuba wax after the tung oil would further protect the surface. Thanks for your tips on mixing and applying

Jim Swyler I've heard the same....but so far I've steered clear of waxes. They have their downfalls and don't fit into most of what I do. But a wax does allow for a nicely buffed surface.

Glad you enjoyed the video, Thank you for your compliments and for watching. Perhaps it will be of use in a project of yours down the road. I enjoyed using it and am considering offering the various colors they make as an option for my farm tables I make. Thanks again.

The Homestead Craftsman hey bud im tearing down an old barn and selling the wood but im only getting 1$ a linear foot for the barn wood is that fair? i want to start makiing things like you out of my old wood too. is it lukritave? LIKE ALL YOUR WORK AND ANTRIPENURESHIP SKILLS. PEACE.
@thehomesteadcraftsman8975

Able Cherpes It depends on a lot of factors, I would say sell it for the most someone will pay for it. It's not water during a drought, it's wood, they don't need it, they want it. It's also hard to get, so make it worth your time. I get 99% of my wood free, but I have to go through a lot to get it, so I think of it as expensive since the hours that I spend tearing boards out of a barn could have been spent making money. As for the lucrativeness, it can be, but not a super money maker. You can only make one thing at a time and once your paid it's over. What I'm getting at is that when your trading hours for dollars you are very limited, you need to multiply yourself by setting up stuff to make residue or passive income, like rental property. So basically, woodworking for money can be lucrative, if you use the money you make to buy things that will make you more money. Perhaps more of an answer than you where looking for, but you hit right on my favorite topic of conversation!

That looks really good!! Like how the milk paint still allows the grain to show through - personally like the look of red milk paint the best. This has pecked my interest further. Hope to try this technique out with the Danish Oil as well. Lastly, thanks for not posting an April Fools video!

I have always used Real Milk Paint for my projects. One trick I learned was that you can use replace up to 20% of the water in the mix with pure tung oil.

Hello, , milk paint should be really quite thin, also the tiny clumps are unnecessary to remove, they will disolve if you just let it sit for 5 min or so before use. I make mine in a jar add water first then paint and shake. Let sit and then it's ready to use. Milk paint is a wonderful product but most people find the very thin consistency a little strange at first. Happy painting, hemp oil over milk paint is nice also miss mustard seed has a nice line of versatile waxes.

Hi, Thanks for the comment, here's my thoughts. As far as it's thiness, I think it depends on what your doing. I don't really think there are any hard rules in paint mixing, it's all situational. For example painting vertical vs. horizontal. Also, having it thicker makes it act more as a grain filler in my case providing a smoother finish with one coat (when rubbed out) and avoiding having to do multiple coats and sanding in between. I use a lot of water based finishes, with most being paint and I always adjust the viscosity according to the project and the desired result. As for the particles, your right on, it was unnecessary and I end up skipping it. But back on thinner finishes, when I do distressed finishes, having it thin is great since I'm going to rough it up any way, I use a lot let paint. Thanks again, I along with others who read the comments appreciate your thoughts.

I wish you hadn't abandoned the mixing instructions. Just mixing milk paint to whatever thickness you want doesn't allow it to be used the way it was designed. Milk paint is supposed to be thinner....sometimes equal parts paint powder to water. This allows a deeper penetration and longer lasting effect. I guess it could work being mixed almost as thick as regular paint but what a waste. Try doing it the way it was designed. I think you would enjoy it. Just my two cents...but hey your piece is very pretty so it seems to have worked out!

It is an oil, it does have some sort of hardeners in it I believe, but it's not a film finish like poly, shellac, lacquer, etc.

Em Van Stiphout Glad you liked the video. I have not tried making milk paint, I'm not against it but it's probably not something I'll end up doing. I like the type I was using and can get it semi locally. It's quality is proven and I like the colors available, so for now at least I go store bought on the milk paint. I'm sure there's good videos available here on youtube on the topic. You could also research old recipes if you want to be traditional. Thanks for watching.
