great video, I've been having the milk kefir for almost 4 weeks and as much as I don't like the taste, I know I go to the loo every day as before having the kefir I was struggling to go twice a week. So yes the milk kefir is fantastic. If it wasn't for you wonderful people showing us the health way of living, Who knows how long we could last. I also started making Kombucha tea at the same time with the kefir and I have a glass of Kefir before I go to sleep and I have a glass of Kombucha during the day. By the way I eat red meat once a week, chicken twice a week and fish once a week with plenty green vegies. Good luck to all, and good health.

plant based kefir's basically use water kefir grains (or specialized sachets containing most of the same bacteria) from what i have seen.

I'm using my spare milk kefir grains for making water kefir instead of just throwing them away. The process is exactly the same as with water kefir grains and the finished beverage tastes even the same. Only difference is the milk kefir grains stop growing in the sugar water and have to be replaced regularly after a month or so with new spare grains.

I drink both, but I prefer milk kefir. I'm a yogurt lover though and I love kefir milk. The homemade yogurt tips the board for me and the fermentation time is faster. 2 days vs 4 days.

#1) Can you ruin milk kefir? Does it go bad easily? Like by over fermenting or if you go out of town for a week? #2) Do the grains grow over time? So if I start process with half a teaspoon of grains to make 1 jar of Kefir by producing a few times will I grow grain volume to two tablespoons of grains (which I can split in half to get 2 separate jars going). Is it best to start by making it in small batches like pint size? As I would think it needs to be shaken/stirred/mixed around periodically.
@jamescummings6703
@jamescummings6703 9 ай бұрын
@@beverlycharles6534 I've never ruined a batch of it, but if it's been in the fridge for too long with the grains in it i'll dump it and start a new batch. If you don't plan on making any for weeks or months at a time, just put them in a small amount of milk, enough to cover all of the grains just to keep them fed. The grains definitely grow over time, I started with less than a table spoon, now I have enough to do 4 Mason jars. Soon enough you'll have enough grains to give away. I usually make mine in a 1 Qt mason jar. I do my first ferment with the lid loosely tightened on the jar. The next day I seal it completely and let it sit another 24 hrs. (this step isn't necessary, but I do it for a more yogurt taste) After that 24 hrs, I remove the grains and add fruit and let it sit in the refrigerator. Once that's done I put them in pint mason jars to take to work with me. I prefer shaking mine because it's easy and effort less. Plus with shaking you don't crush the fruit and you get to see the colors start to bleed in the mix.

I drink only heavily fermented milk kefir for 4 months, with a little bit of fruit and deer meat and turkey. I lost about 25 pounds of fat and was never lactose intolerant ever again. Also since then my health has been amazing. I was drinking at least 2400 calories of kefir milk a day. Only supplements I took was k2 mk4 and mk7 5mg (not mcg) and Pterostilbene and pqq 80mg and glutathione. So I didnt have much fat to lose in the first place but I suppose it's basically keto.

I keep both of these grains at home - milk kefir grains and water kefir. Though, I never use cow's milk for my kefir, but goat's, full fat, preferably unpasterised, organic. My kids love both the milk and water kefir which tastes like homemade soda. I only ferment it once with pieces of peeled lemon and raw homegrown apple and a few tablespoons of sugar and a little bit of raw locally produced honey. 👌🩷

Great! I can't wait to try coconut and soy milks to see if they get thick & tangy like whole cows milk. I prefer to buy plant and nut milk. Most often drinking soy milk, but didn't think kefir made w plant kill would taste as good cow's milk. Is it tangy w thick consistency like cow milk kefir? What brand coconut milk do you use? I want to start w tried & true.

One thing I'm trying to research is that all water kefir has alcohol in it, whether it's a tiny bit to 2% alcohol.....articles i have read about alcohol say that no amount of alcohol is good for you, so are the health benefits that much over the the damaging effects you would get long term from the alcohol?

Water kefir doesn't have much taste unless you do a second fermentation and add fruit or fruit juice to add a flavor. Also a second ferment will make it a little bubbly like a sparkling water.

Why didn't you include environmental impact of food choices in your analysis? Dairy is very hard on our environment. Also people concerned with animal welfare avoid dairy. And shouldn't people with milk allergies should also avoid kefir. And since water kefir doesn't have calories the nutrient value doesn't matter. It will just replace plain water instead of nutrient containing foods. Finally, even though milk kefir has more bacteria, is there science showing milk kefir actually makes people healthier than just water kefir? It could be the different bacteria compositions don't translate into increased health. Also, why no mention that water kefir can be made with almost any fruit juice and will have the vitamins and minerals of that fruit juice ...but with much less sugars and calories
