How to capture milky-way in a little light pollution? What's the proper setting?
@matthewstorerphotography4 жыл бұрын
Book a plan ticket to a dark spot. It doesnt happy. That's why it's called light pollution unfortunately. Maybe try a light pollution filter. But it depends how bad your area is.

Hi! Thank you for this video but I'm still confused. I'm so new to this I don't fully understand. Do we really need to buy an additional lens kit to get good results? I plan to photograph the night sky with xt3 as well as the northern lights along with us in the subject . Would that work? Also your links are down like the fuji best night lens link.

Just an FYI, The focus ring on that lens isn't mechanical. If you get your infinity focus during daytime, switch to manual focus, turn the camera off and remove the lens. you can then twist the focus ring all you want it won't effect the focus. When you get to your site, Attach lens, power on and you are ready to shoot. Your tape may only confuse you if you depend on it and the ring gets moved while in your bag. you would need to realign before powering the camera back on, or you will move your focus. The tape trick works wonderfully on lenses with mechanical focus rings (meaning they change the lens focus with or without power).

Should I go with the rule of 400 or 500? Thanks in advance :)
@matthewstorerphotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks nate I am glad that youve enjoyed it and hopefully learnt something! I would using a second shutter speed at f3.5 at 18mm. Then, depending how much light was around from the moon an iso value of 6400. The longest shutter speed you can do is 18seconds before the stars move, thats why I suggest 15seconds then if its to bright reduce the ISO value :) Hope this helps, email me if you ever need further advice :)

Hi, Matt, I have a Nikon D5600 with the standard kit lens, and I have a Tamron 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 The kit lens is 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 .I have started to shoot the milky way since this springtime. I get some noise in the images sometimes. I do not do hardly any editing, not familiar enough to do that except an occasional edit with Nikon NXD free editing that I use. My question though is what and HOW do I figure out for my camera the 500 rule?? A neighbor friend also mentioned a 400 rule to use also?? My Nikon camera is cropped?? Do we have to use 1.5 in the math?? At some point would like to purchase a full frame camera, with a 2.8 lens and wide angle like 10mm. Would like to know the math on how to get the 500 rule. Thank You So Much. Cheers. PS> We live in Northeastern Minnesota, next to Lake Superior. I did have taken several hundred images so far. Very exciting.
@matthewstorerphotography4 жыл бұрын
Super nice mate! Yeah the 500 rule would become 10mm x 1.5 cop = 15mm then you can use the 500/15mm and it will get you 33.33 seconds for the shutter speed. But using a new rule it gets you closer back to 22 seconds. So I would shoot around the 20-30 second (unless you have a remote to use 33 seconds) and this should be ok!

Hello Laura, I must admit it will be very hard and also it will introduce a lot of noise/grain into the image! However, what I would recommend is going out on a 30-50% moon this will help bring some light into the image and help you light up the foreground. Do you use the Fuji Noise Reduction function for long exposures?
@matthewstorerphotography5 жыл бұрын
That only works for JPEG images, so no point using it for RAW :D

Yep of course. Just follow the instructions that I was pointing out and should be fine. Depending what lens you have of course

Thank you so much for that video! Noticed it accidentally in the feed and now subscribed and watching other videos :) I am really new to cameras and stuff, I am basically at the start of my journey, and seeing that you can get that even with a kit is so encouraging! I have Canon 80D with 18-55mm kit lens, so I definitely want to give it a try now! Just need to understand where and when I need to be to see something like that :) still struggling with understanding that :) Thank you so much, fantastic video!

Hi, I have a fuji XT3 your video helped me a lot but there is still something missing... IDK how to set the settings on my camera for star shooting, like how to set it to shoot every 3 seconds

Thanks buddy - appreciate it! Yeah I would just do interval timer

Curious what you’re using for your shutter release/timer. Are these done in the body (T on the shutter dial)? I recently bought the x-t3 and appreciate your video to learn to shoot these night photos.
@matthewstorerphotography3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, with the X-T3 line up they have it inbuilt as you can push the shutter speed right out which I love and just use a 2 or 10 second timer before that.

Hi Matt, great video! I new to Fuji system and just got my XT-3. Plan to shot a Milky Way on Laowa 9mm. May I know how to set the camera to shot at 10s, 15,s 30s without a shutter release? I tried to set my camera at ISO6400, SS 500 & F2.8 and use the Fuji App, the remote just won't hold. Wonder what I need to do in the camera menu instead. Thanks.

You will need to find the timer on the camera set that to a 2 second delay or 10 second delay. Thrn on the top dial set the mode to 'T' and adjust the shutter speed to around 25 seconds for the Laowa

Well presented to a newbie, also you actually read and answer your viewers 😧. That’s amazing, I subscribed based on those things... 👍

We have the same kit so I'll give it a shot tonight. Couple questions: Are you using back button and focusing peaking to nail focus? Do you use the same shutter speed when you stand in the composition? Thanks!

Scratch that, it's nearly a full moon tonight. Although, I did pick up that Photopills app and it's very cool! Great suggestion.

No problem I was about to say its a super moon this weekend. Youll have to wait 7 to 10 days for less moon. I manually focus its best to do this during the day before you head out. Secondly I did use the same Shutter speed when I stood in the image :D

kit lens is a dirty word when talking about XF fuji. XC lens, maybe? Great vid,Matt!
@matthewstorerphotography4 жыл бұрын
This is true, I have only ever used the 50-230 XC lens
